Ok, this might be a dumb question, but I'm reading things on the
internet and I don't understand something. When I had my interview, the
woman said that if I'm approved, I'd get my first check for August in
September (because of the waiting period). I first became disabled on
February 3rd and haven't worked since. I am reading on the internet
where people get retroactive checks that are like $5000-6000. Will I get
paid back to February in September, or only get a check for August?  I'm
confused . . . .

You would get a check for August.  The big checks you hear about happen when
a person is slow in applying, or when the appeal process takes longer.  I
was disabled in May of 2002.  Didn't admit it and get around to applying
until mid 2003.  Finally approved and got a check for Dec 2002 thru Nov 2003
in early December 2003.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me, Jo :) I am hoping to get SSI in
the meantime.

SSDI does not take effect until you have been disabled for six months. For
example: my wife first became disabled May 26th, 2003. We applied for SSDI
on August 12th, 2003. But, SSDI did not even begin to review her case #
until after November 26th, 2003, which marked when she had been disabled for
six months. She was finally approved for SSDI in May of 2004 and we received
a retro-active check that covered ONLY back to November 26th, 2003, or in
other words, only back as far as the date that marked when she had been
disabled for six months.
