Yesterday Rachel ran in a local kids race called the Awesome 3000. She was
last because of a stitch in her side, but she finished without whining and I
was so proud of her.
Later in the evening, she was sitting on the sofa and said something I
couldn't understand so I looked at her and asked her to repeat it. The first
thing I noticed was that she appeared flushed. Her eyes looked toward me,
but her head didn't move and she seemed to have trouble speaking, like her
tongue was too big. After a few seconds, she said she was tingly and numb. A
few more seconds and she seemed to be able to move and then she was able to
speak clearly and said that she'd heard a 'beep', as if from far away and
felt like she couldn't talk. The whole thing lasted about 30 seconds and she
didn't seem PI afterward, but remained flushed for an hour or so.
Rachel has never had simple partials before, but I'm thinking that we have
seen one last night. We see the neuro. in a month and I'm not really
thinking about calling him over this one incident. It did make me consider
what may have caused it, though. Her body was under a lot of stress from
running and she was quite worn out. She's also smack in the middle of
puberty and she's growing very quickly right now.
I hate to think that she may have epilepsy forever, but I guess if she does,
I would rather see these little SPs (simple partials) than the CPs (complex
partials) that become TCs (tonic/clonics...gran mals).

Sorry, forgot to explain PI...post-ictal...the period after a seizure where

Kelly,
These are the kind of siziures that Niki's had. She's had both kinds
and these are diffinately better to deal with. It is harder though to
make sure when they are actually having one. Hope this was just an
isolated incident.

((((Debbie))))
I can't tell you how happy I am that you were able to make it to the
gimpfest last week. You, more than anyone I know, deserved that break.
Thanks so much for your advice and support with Rachel's seizures. You and
Caroline saved my life, or at least what was left of my sanity.
Hugs,
Kelly C.

Those are my thoughts too. May God bless both of you with answers
found. I went with a girl that had this in high school for about 6 months
and I learned so much about what this can do to a persons life. I think
about her every now and then and I hope things went well with the guy she
dumped me for. :-)

Thanks, Harv. It's hard enough raising kids with the regular challenges of
childhood. Adding anything unusual makes it a real treat.:o)

John's one and only came after a long day skiing and
then the drive home. Jen was a baby. We were eating KFC
and he said something odd. I looked up, his eyes rolled
back and then just seem to fall asleep. I got up and
was standing over him trying to see if he was breathing
when he came to and asked me what I thought I was
doing. He had no idea he had been out. When he came
too, I made him get on the floor while I called the
doctor. He thought I was nuts and the doctor thought I
was nuts but told me to not let him eat anymore solid
food and he made an appointment to see neuro in the
morning. Neuro thought I was nuts but ran scan anyway.
Guess who was right.
They treated him for a year and then discontinued
medication. He's been fine.
I thought she might have some trouble once puberty
began. That would be typical. Way too many changes
going on that affect the electrical circuitry. I am
actually proud of you for your reaction to it. You have
come a long way. Bet the doctor has some suggestions on
how she should prepare for the next long run - like
taking a bit extra medication just to cover bases. But
I would let him to the practicing medicine. lol

well, I am sorry to hear that the streak has ended, but glad that there is a
ready explanation or major exercise plus raging puberty. Got my fingers
crossed that this is a one-timer and saying a few prayers for the parents of
an active, pubescent young lady!
