Well, they managed to do it today. Shaw's has been
totally ignoring all the handicap people about the
state of their carts. 4 weeks ago, one of them quit
working as in dead as a door nail. You tell management.
They say they are going to fix it. A week later it is
still broken and another lady in the other cart tells
me to wait and I can take hers. When I got in it, it
had no power left but I managed to coax it around the
store. She told me she had complained about it for the
last two weeks. I come by a manager and let him have
it. He said he couldn't talk with me because I was
angry. Guess what I said. Two days later the drug
store manager called me and said he had heard that some
lady had gotten pissed at a manager a few days ago and
was it me. Yep. hehehe So we talk for awhile and he
says he is going upstairs immediately to talk with
upper upper management. I have been with that drug
store for 30 years. They sold out to Shaw's when Shaw's
opened this store. Mike knows me well. Said for me to
come apart and start yelling at someone means I have
been pushed to far or in a great deal of pain or both.
I told him which manager I had been trying to deal with
before I blew up at the one who wouldn't talk with me
and he knew exactly who I was talking about. Said if
she actually tried to smile, her face would crack and
hit the floor. I really just wish someone would do
their job. If they say they are going to do something
like report a broken cart, then they should report a
broken cart.
Last week I was not there but this week - the cart was
plugged in and waiting. I get in; unplug; put in my
key; turn it on and frigging NOTHING. A customer comes
through the door to me sitting there crying and asks if
she can help. I asked her to go get a manager and tell
the idiot that it has been 4 weeks now and no one cares
to do their damn job and call to get this thing fixed.
I really need a cart and I can't walk another inch to
get it. If you can get them to please send one I would
really appreciate it.
Some young kid who worked there comes by me -- poor
thing and I say: 4 weeks and it is broken - it needs a
key he says. I have a key - it doesn't work. I will
show you -- it doesn't even work when plugged in. He
says - you are not supposed to plug it in to drive it.
I KNOW THAT. I am only saying that it is dead and
doesn't respond to being plugged in!!!! I will tell
someone he say. Well tell them that it has been like
this for FOUR weeks.
Meanwhile the lady must have gotten to someone as
another kid comes with the other working cart. I manage
to wander around the store in it. I did stopped by the
pharmacy and told them to let Mike know that his chat
with management two weeks ago did NOTHING. When I got
to the checkout, I spotted a manager I had never seen
before come down from the ivory tower and get the young
boy who had brought me the working cart. No sure what
he told the kid Cassey, but Cassey came over and helped
me finish unloading my cart and then helped me to the
car with it and drove it back. He would have gotten a
hug from me except I knew he would have panicked. lol
I am in the process of writing a letter to anyone who
has an address and that includes corporate Shaw's /
Albertson, Patricia Heaton who does ads for them, and
Osco who has just bought all the pharmacies inside of
Shaw's, the state's handicap department, and maybe a tv
station or two.
All I want is that people just do their job.
If you have any good phrases about abusing the
disabled, give them to me.

{{{{{{{{Duckie}}}}}}} The local supermarket changed their policy for me.
I told them it made NO SENSE for a handicapped person to have to walk into
the store to the information counter (halfway down) to get a key, then back
out the other end (the exits), all the way the length of the store back to
the enter doors to get the cart. Then after shopping and putting the
groceries in the car, you had to drive it back to the store, take the key
back to the information desk and then out the exits and back around to the
car. I told them I would shop elsewhere and save half an hour of walking.
Now they have the key chained to the chairs and it is SO much easier. Also
the door to enter has been made available to exit if you're just dropping
off the cart. So sometimes getting upset with them works.
Keep us informed on whether or not they actually do anything.

Gosh Duckie - I'm so sorry that was so frustrating for you! Definately
not into customer service. They should take some hints from the stores
here. If you are a regular shopper, they give you your OWN KEY to the
scooter so you don't have to walk into the store to get it each time.
All Publix stores have the same brand of scooters so I can use the one
my local store gave me at any one I stop at. Then they carry your
groceries out to the car for you so you don't have to return it to the
store yourself. Maybe your pharmasist can let them know how it's really
done! Hugs...DianeW

hey, good to know Publix does some things right! (being that some frineds of
mine were victims of the historical sexual discrimination there, which I hope
has improved since they were sued). What does Gooding's do, do you know?
I'm just curious as they are generally a more upscale store than Publix.

I have my own key. This machine has been dead as in
dead and no power getting to it from the plug so it is
not 'out of juice', it is dead. I think the four or
five people I sent in to tell the manager may have
gotten through to them finally. I need to call and
check with Mike again and see just what is up...

(((((((((((((((Duckie))))))))))))))))))
I used one of those scooters once and it was so dead that it barely could
scoot an inch! I gave up and just limped around the store. This is Wal Mart
BTW. It is such a hassle to get one of those that I just gave up when no one
listened. I have just decided that they dont need my business that bad if
they can not provide a decent way for us gimps to get around their store. So
I go to our only other grocery store here and shop for food and I go to
another for my meds. The store where I get my meds is located up in front of
the store so I walk. I do have a complaint where I went for a seminar. They
did not have a elevator!!!!!! I had to climb the stairs to get to the place
and when I did I hurt!!!! I plan on complaining today about that! I wonder
if there is something we can do to make business' aware that they will loose
our business if they can not provide this service to us? Any ideas?

I have to say that the stores around me (the larger ones anyway) always
have scooters and they are always working as I see people using them. I
don't know what is wrong with management that can't keep things working
properly. Are they just too lazy to plug them in, or is it that they
don't really care? I have to tell you that I am, and always have been, a
letter writer. My Mom used to say "There she goes again! Look out!"
whenever she saw me writing a letter to complain about something :) On
the other hand, I also write when people do good and considerate things
:) If I were you, I'd fire off a letter to head office of Shaw's and
send a copy to your state office. There is no excuse for having
scooters that do not work!

right now I am in the process of writing a lengthy
letter to corporate higher ups to Shaw's, Osco [who now
own the pharmacy], P. Heaton who does their ads [just
cause i think she needs to know how they seem to treat
the disabled, and the town of Burlington's department
of handicap plus the selectmen. I have tried the 2X4
and now I am using the bulldozer with the wreaker ball
attached. idiots. If people would just do their jobs

My favorite local grocery has carts that work. Four of them. They will
give you your own key. Now its a huge warehouse store, bag your own
groceries, etc. And all the gimps in town shop there. If there is a
cashier the is just going on shift or off, they will help you bag. Often one
of the shopping cart collectors will come over if they see you going to your
car, and help you load up and drive the cart back to the store and plug it
back in.
They also have large, well maintained restrooms. And the other warehouse
store in town can't figure out why they can't compete.

You know, I've noticed our WalMart has two sets of carts marked night and
day. I assume the idea is to have one set plugged in and charging while the
other is in use. Our WM has the gimp carts right in the vestiblue with the
other carts and there is always an attendant right there to get you set up.
But this is a small-town WM, with a small town friendliness and concern.

Throw the Globe into the mix. Heck, send the letter to the Herald and the
Metro as well. I know the Star markets in the city all went downhill after
they were bought out by Shaw's and we were only there for 2.5 years after the
takeover!
They need to be slammed for this, it is simply inexcusable. They've had
more than enough notice to fix this problem. Let them know you are a longtime
resident of the area (don't mention the upcoming move! heehee) and that you
have lots of friends and contacts and that you plan to spread the word about
this totally disrespectful and deliberately ignorant way of treating their
less mobile customers so that they will not only lose business from those
less able to walk, but also from all their friends, family members, and
anyone who reads the paper or watches the news!

Man, Duckie, that rots.
Taking off on Nann's idea - what about the Burlington Paper (the Bee?).
Can't remember whether they are part of Beacon Press or not. Is there anyone
at town hall responsible for enforcing ADA for town businesses? Having the
carts may be something the town requires, as opposed to a service the store
supplies voluntarily. If the former, having inoperational carts may be a
violation of some sort.

The man that is in charge of the handicap is actually
in charge of Veteran's affairs. Turns out his wife is
in a wheelchair and he is not forgiving or pleasant to
businesses which ignore the rules. He is attached to
Town Hall and is definitely getting a copy of this letter.
