Has she seen a rheumatologist? That's the doctor most informed about
arthritis and he/she can offer something that might work for the pain. Most
over-the-counter (OTC) meds are not intended for the intense pain we get.

Hi DeeTee,
No, she lives in a very small town and doctor access is very limited.
Her current doctor has not been any help, that's why I wanted to ask
about over the counter meds.
Thanks

It's rough when a person has trouble getting to a doctor. Does she live
within an hour or two of a larger city where she may be able to get the
medical help she needs? I realize it might be a hardship but maybe if
she can get to a large town or city, once the tests and diagnoses are
taken care of, the doctor closest to her can keep tabs on her.

She needs a doctor for the RA. How do you know it's RA if she hasn't seen a
rheumatologist?
RA is an autoimmune disease that will cause problems with her joints and
extreme pain. RA cannot be handled with anything over the counter. RA can
kill her slowly and painfully if not treated. It's not something to mess
around with. She needs dmards NOW. And sounds like pain meds also
If there's not a rheumy around, sounds like you're going to have to drive
her to one. =)

She needs to see a rheumatologist. The longer she goes without proper treatment
the worse the damage to her joints.

Says who? Did a rheumatologist (RD) make that diagnosis?
Were x-rays, scans, and lab tests made to verify that?
What is her age? Has she been sent to phyical therapy to
learn exercises which would benefit her - reduce her pain
and increase her mobility?

Not without more details. Even then, it's an iffy situation. As
most in the group can swear, what works best for one is not
the right one for someone else. We have all reacted in very
different ways to the all the drugs available out there. Thus
what someone recommends may not be the best for you
mother - it may even be harmful.

That is exactly why she needs to see a RD - a professional
dealing with the 100+ varities of arthritis. He can recommed
which drugs would work best for your mother and monitor
her progress, perhaps changing the medications if one does
not work. Most folks in this group have had to switch several
times before discovering the one drug that worked best.
