Hi,
I've been on Prednisone off and on several times. I'm just getting over a
severe case of sinus infection which started in January with continuous
coughing (lots of phlegm), and extreme shortness of breath.
Add RA to that and I was a hermit for three months, just sitting and doing
nothing because at the least bit
of exertion I would lose my breath and that was scary.
But anyway, back to Prednisone. I believe that Prednisone has done the
following to me. I may be wrong but I really feel this way.
the moon face
facial hair growth
skin that is like onionskin paper...very thin and wrinkly. I expect
wrinkles at my age but this happened
in a short period of time .
lots of black and blue marks
"dowager's hump" more prominent
swollen feet and ankles? not sure on this one
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yep, that's Pred
facial hair growth
Not for me, but everyone is different with drugs

Yep, it also can give what phlebotomists call "Prednisone Veins" (very
thin and easy to do a through-and-through)
.

Yep

Prednisone "leeches" calcium from bones so this could be likely

Yep, same thing happened with me

I've finally gotten to the point that the RD will not put me on Pred.
This is a good and bad thing. Good: I don't have to deal with the
side effects (you forgot moody and "twitchy"). Bad: I don't have
anything that will relieve the RA in a quick manner during a flare,
though the Enbrel seems (touching wood) to be working so far.
Smokie Darling (Annie) - Okay, it's only been two weeks on Enbrel, but
I can hope, can't I?

I currently use Prednisone for my PA. Started three weeks ago at 15 mg
a day, and right now at 10mg a day. I am using it for the first time.
I was actually impressed with how well it fights against inflammation.
I have had no serious side-effects so far, except for the increased
hunger.
I did experience a bit of shortness of breadth when I started it, but I
am doing okay. I will be taking it until I can be back on methotrexate.

Sounds about right. My experiences with it are similar. However I would
have been dead long ago without it.
It isn't a miracle cure. It just feels like one.
Another potential side effect. Family and friends start handling you with
leather gauntlets. THe hell with kid gloves.

Yes to all of your signs.
now hope more signs do not show, like
cataracts,
bone loss
bleeding
ulcers
glaucoma
and the list goes on and on.
I hate it but sometimes ya gotta do what you gotta do, to survive.
right?
who has been on cortisone since 93....TOO D... Long!!!
Duckie - 26 Apr 2005 05:38 GMT
I am right there with you but finally down to 4mg and
fighting every instinct in my body to not cave a take
more to make me feel better.

This is what I call the Evil Miracle Drug...
I am thankful that except for a few times in my life I don't have to take
it...Yet! But my dear husband has taken it more times than I like to
remember...and the Leather Gloves....OUCH...He doesn't need any help with
aggression...
And all the bad side effects...But without it...He would be dead(Severe
Asthma)...so That is why I call it the evil Miracle Drug...
And I think of all of you who have to take it daily...But I know the few
times I was on it....My joints were very happy....But my head...Yuck it
didn't like it at all...
Hugs Cindy

I had a bad flare so went on a series of prednisone and boy in a few days I
felt better. Then on Sat the
16th I was hit in the (a.s)with an attach of sciatica. I just kept on going
taking a few extra pain meds and decreasing my dosages of prednizone as
perscribed.. Still no relief so I try resting a couple of days not bending
ect, mostly lying down. Well not much improvement. God it hurts so bad on my
butt to the bottom of my foot. I have rubbed, laid on ice, laid on heating
pad , done everything I know to do except go to the doc. On Sunday of
this week 7th day of pain, my sister, who is a nurse came by to check on
me, fussed me out, and then and called my ortho, who wasnt on call of
course, but his doc on call, called me in some flexril, Well it put me in
la la land so I slept all day yesterday and last nite but today I am out of
bed and trying to move again.
does any of you have these attacks ? bad how long do they last?
thanks for listening to my whine but I am in pain and nothing seems to help

I usually get them if I'm doing something I shouldn't (vacuuming, moving a
packed box, etc.). The only thing I can do is take Tylenol or Tylenol
Arthritis (timed release) and stop doing what I was doing. Sometimes a
heating pad in the middle of my back helps. Don't ask me why so high up,
that's just the way my body wants it.
I will add you to our prayers because it (sciatic pain) IS painful!!

Put in Addison and Cushings Syndrome or Adrenal Gland in search engine. I
can't remember which but one is from using too much pred.

sounds about right. Prednisone is bad stuff in the long term, it may
seem like a miracle drug in the beginning. -- MZ
