Hi
I'm not sure about posting this.If I am in the right place or not.
I am 57 years old male,I had a Zimmer total knee replacement done on
March 7,2005.The recovery was going well, and had physical therapy at
the hospital, two days after surgery. Then I went home the fourth day.
Had home therapy 3 times a week, then after the third week, I was able
to drive and go to therapy myself. Into the 5th week,my extention was 6
degrees, and my bend was 110 degrees. It was the 5th week last week
after surgery, when I called my doctor who operated on me,and I said
that I couldn't get anymore extension or bend on my new knee,as we all
thought at this point. So I was taken in the hospital last Friday, and
put to sleep and had a "manipulation" down on my knee( when you are
under sedation) the doctor actually bends and extends your new knee
manually for about 15 minutes.I was told scar tissue builds up inside
and can cause the knee not to flex or extend as it should. The
"manipulation " is suppose to help break up the scar tissue and bending
and extending the knee, should be ok..........but physical therapy MUST
continue.Anyone else have this problem? And if so,how long before you
were able to bend about 120 degrees and have full extension? I know
it's been only 2 days after my last treatment, but I still have the
extension and bending problem. I know people heal differently, and your
body will heal in time.I still have some pain in walking and moving the
leg around.Just wondering if it is just me?
Thank you
Tom

I had really good results without manipulation. I think
you are pushing yourself too much but at the moment
can't remember what the Zimmer is. I went back to
dancing after the 3 month period and I think it was at
about 5 months that I realized I was really moving well
again. It kept getting stronger and stronger. I have
been missing the gym for about a month now and my new
knee is beginning to complain. Got to get back to
lifting weights with it so it stay limber and strong.
My knee was done November 5th, 2005 and will be 57 this
summer.
And you are totally in the right place. Here is a hint,
hide your chocolate. This crowd is very back at
stealing errr borrowing chocolate.

welcome, tom. you are in the right place. i haven't had that surgery yet,
but there are others here who have. i do know that adhesions can be
limiting and painful things to break loose on your own (experience from a
car wreck and mulitiple leg surgeries and was told i'd never have more than
a ten-degree bend---which is currently not the case). still, i imagine even
having it done under anesthetic has to leave you will soreness to deal with.
how long it takes to heal from it probably depends a lot upon how
self-motivated/dedicated you are in doing the pt and how quickly you
normally heal. actually, it sounds to me that you are doing ok, considering
it's only been two days since the manipulation. just don't give up on the
exercises/pt. hang in there. your efforts will no doubt pay-off.

Thanks guys !! May I say the depression and frustration came
with my operation, since I was always very active all my life. Before
the opreation I was told 6-8 weeks was the normal after the surgery to
walk without pain. I do my PT as often as I can.So if for some(like me)
the new knee does not respond right away, give it time..This is MAJOR
surgery to replace your "real" knee with an artifical one. I'm glad
there is support out there. I'll keep you guys posted in the future
about the progress.

Hang around Tom and lurk. We host whine and cheese
parties and you just may need to come here and whine
often. That is okay. We also can use occasional hugs
and good thoughts or prayers which you can give as well.
Besides, you didn't share all your chocolate.
