I need to get rid of some bills here as things have gone from bad to
worse. So the DSL has to go. I thought I could do Netscape for 9.95 a
month but they do not have software for Macs. Can anyone recommend a
VERY cheap, but good dial up company that supports Macs?

Thanks,
Carole

Hi Carole,

Here's a list of ISPs: http://www.myispfinder.org/ and here's one that
says it has nationwide service for $6.95 and supports Macs:
http://www.isprank.com/Company/DialUp+4+Less.com.html

I have MSN for my ISP and I'm paying $15.95 a month but I can use both
my computer and WebTV (using what's called the One Plan since they're
both Microsoft) just not at the same time. They support Mac because when
I call for tech support I'm asked if I'm using a PC or Mac (the answer
is PC).  Besides I know of a few people who have Macs and use MSN.

HTH,

There should be very few, if any, internet connection
serviced that do not run standard TCP protocols. All the
supa-dupa software does for this or that company, is add a
few adds and graphics to your browser (sometimes) and add
the connection details to your dial-up software that is
typically already built into your operating system.

While some like to replace your default software with their
own customised versions, you should not need to do anything
more than add a few numbers, a username, and maybe your
logon password, to your own system's files.

Mac, PC, LinuxBox, whatever, ALL use the same basic TCP/IP
connection processes.

For example...

My ISP has a server connection address of 193.38.113.3

All I need to do is to make sure that this info is in my
config files for this kind of thing, and when I fire up my
modem, as long as I've got the other requried details where
they need to be, everything connects, logs in, and presto!
I'm online. I write my configs by hand, but most people have
"wizard" semi-automated software to do this kind of thing,
where questions are asked and details filled in in boxes,
and the config file auto-generated from the results.

The "We support Macs" statement typically only means that
there are phone advisors available who have the "what to do
with a Mac" handbook handy should you call them, and a maybe
bit of extra software to send you that can auto-generate the
very same thing you could hand configure yourself without
too much difficulty.

If you're online at the mo, do a few Googles for the info
you need. you'll probably be surprised at just how easy this
kind of thing actually is.

P.S. Just as a backup, while your looking for a flat-rate
service that suits, try www.webtribe.net (uk?) or one of the
other many "pay as you go" services. Its always handy to
have something in reserve, but watch out for that phone
bill! 8|

Hi Carole,,,,  The answer will have to been about a company in your area.

You might check with local ISPs, often there are very good ones that serve
only a small area. I'd think that'd be quite true in your part of the
country. Check your yellow pages under ISPs, then look up their websites or
even call them if you are so disposed  ;)  (funny how we think of the web
first these days!)

I'm on earthlink (obviously!), we get the AARP discount (through Mike, not me
- well, not quite yet LOL) so it costs us $19.95 - not real cheap, but we
needed something portable when we knew we'd be moving a lot.

Thanks everyone. I would like to go with a local inexpensive one, but I
have had a few experiences in the past where the service was not good.
That's why I was looking for some place that people could recommend.

I did call the phone company yesterday and got the special price on my
phone for those on public assistance, so that is a help too :)

I've got a friend using Earthlink and it has worked
well for her but don't think she is on a mac. Isn't
Earthlink owned by Comcast or somehow linked... I am
using my mac on Comcast.

I know I could use comcast, but I can't afford it. That's why I have to
get rid of Verizon DSL - I can't afford that at this point. So I'm
looking for a 9.95 dialup until something good happens in my life.

Earthlink is Comcast's dialup I think. And I am sorry,
got no idea how much it costs.
Something good is heading your way. I can just feel it.

Thanks Duckie.  I finally went to social security and applied for SSDI.
I filled out the forms online and then printed out the cover page and
medical release forms and dropped them off yesterday. I am hoping they
process my application quickly. I also applied for general assistance at
the dept of social services but they only give you $339 a month. So I
have to hope that my appeal to Prudential for my disability goes through
or I'm going to be in big trouble. I still have to wonder how insurance
companies can do this to people. Why do we pay for disability insurance
during our whole working lives, and then when we need to use it, they
deny the claim?  Something just isn't right.

did the state turn you down for state disability benefits?

No, Kate. The state has declared me 100% disabled. I am getting the $339
a month, plus food stamps and medical coupons (still not sure what they
cover). I am hoping this account manager for my employer will get me my
short term disability back as they owe me from March 9th and I need that
money to pay the electric, phone, car payment and rent. $339 a month
doesn't cover anything.

Have you looked into NetZero? I can't see anything on their website that
says they *don't* support mac, but I admittedly did not look past the first
page.

fron NETZERO's FAQ page...

I have an Apple Macintosh computer. Can I use NetZero?

Yes, we currently offer NetZero Platinum for Mac users. If you already have
a NetZero Platinum account, simply visit my.netzero.net/s/download to
download the NetZero Platinum software for Mac. If you use are a Mac user
and do not have a NetZero Platinum account, visit www.netzero.net using your
Mac to sign up for a NetZero Platinum Mac account.

And according to the front page the paltinum service is $9.95 per month

Thanks, Karen. When I originally checked out Netzero, they said they
didn't support Macs. Looks like they finally figured out how to do it :)
$9.95 is more in line with what I can afford right now.

I think they must still have some old pages up on their site, Kelly, as
I found the same info you did so we both must have clicked on the same
page :-)
