dunno what i stepped in this past month, but boy, i need to clean off my
shoes or something and quickly.

was it 3 years ago that i had my hand surgery?  at that time i had my left
hand and wrist xrayed, pre-op, and it looked great, from a bone stucture
perspective--no mineral loss at all.

on the 7th, last week, they were xrayed again, because i had been battling
inflammation in that hand and wrist for a week up until then.  dx'd with
synovitis in that hand/wrist/lower arm--treated with anti-inflammatory and
way better now.  then had the xrays done, cuz my doctor wanted to make sure
no obvious soft tissue damage was apparent nor fractures in that hand or
wrist, up to mid-lower arm.

well, i just got a note from her about the xrays.  it seems i now have
diffuse osteopenia in that hand and wrist and as far up the arm bones as was
shown.  (no fractures, dislocations nor obvious soft tissue abnormalities.
whew!)  but geesh, i've been taking the same good calcium supplements,
without missing a day, for years and my last bone density test (dexa) last
year showed that i had a great bone density improvement, almost back to my
baseline of strong bones, which i was naturally delighted about.

what the heck did i do wrong in one year to that hand?  or why is it showing
up in my hand and did not in the dexa?  i'm waaaay puzzled.

well, we are certailny twins, Kate.  I have the exact same issue.  I
actually broke my wrist on my left hand 3 years ago.Had no mineral loss
in the -ray to diagnose the fracture.  I was diagnosed a year latter
with osteoporosis in that wrist.   The rest of my bone density remains
good.  According to my RD, fractures, surgeries, etc. can actually
cause loss of bone density in specific areas of trauma, particularly in
post menopausal women.

That may be the case with you.  Also though, bone density can change
rapidly with many factors (loss of estrogen, corticosteroid drugs, to
name just a few).  So get a new dexa scan to see if this is just
localized.  I have actually rebuilt bone mass just in this last year
with hand weights, tons of moxa, calc phos cell salts, some added D,
Chinese herbs and a switch to liquid calcium.  It can be done.

thank you, for sharing that with me, missy m.  that helps my confusion with
this, enormously!  especially since there was hand surgery after the good
xrays and then there are the recent  lumbar and thoracic cortisone
treatments and the pmw factor.  last year i was doing hand weights and this
year i've slacked off, a lot, because my hand felt much better, until
recently.  guess it's time to regroup again.<smile>  my annual physical in
on the 25th of this month and a dexa is generally part of that.  so, that's
covered.  i'm not familiar with moxa; will research that.   may i ask, which
chinese herbs you are speaking of?  thank you bigtime!
