***********************************************
On Wednesday afternoon I noticed a small, hard lump on my neck where I
*thought* my lymph nodes were supposed to be, but I wasn't sure. The size
was small enough (pea sized) for me not to think it was anything serious. It
doubled/tripled in size by Friday evening and my jaw looked swollen. My
throat was very very sore (think strep-throat pain) and my left ear was
throbbing and I could no longer hear out of my left ear. The pain spiked to
a 9 out of 10 at dinner and my friends Tendyl, FunJon, and KC decided it
warranted a trip to the ER. I called my boyfriend DJ for a second opinion
and then called my father. My Dad's exact words were, "Get thyself to the
ER. NOW." We were at a Hibachi restaurant (I'm in Monterey visiting friends)
so we waited for our food to be finished cooking, ate a few bites, then
promptly packed up the food and hightailed it to the local ER. Now, I'm from
Southern California. I expect to wait a few hours before being seen by the
triage nurse and a few more before seeing the doctor and a few more before
being treated. We were in and out of there in 2 hours, including the time
waiting for blood-work results. The doctor first thought that I could
possibly have mono, but the results came back negative. All the blood-work
was normal and the tests for mono & strep were negative. He thinks that it
is probably a nasty virus that has enlarged my lymph nodes. He prescribed
vicodin every 6 hours for pain and said to get lots of rest, fluids, and
homeopathic remedies.
I'm supposed to work on Wednesday and drive home on Sunday, but my friends
are insisting I stay here until I feel well enough for a 5-hour drive. The
friends I'm staying with are my adopted family and are taking very good care
of me. Did I mention that I've also been flaring for the past week? GAH.

I did the same thing last September. My rd said it was a reaction to the
Remicade I was taking and it was RA nodules and that they wanted a biopsy.
They went dwon before they could get a biopsy and I was told they wanted to
watch it over the next year.

Ashley,
I have nothing more to add, but listen to your friends...You surely don't
need to be driving when you are in so much pain...
Sending lots of prayers and prayers and hugs...

Thanks Kelly for posting this!
I did email Ashley privately, but will post my general response to her
here as well.
My first thought after reading the initial post is that maybe she is
having some symptoms/problems with parotiditit or something similar.
That is inflammation of her saliva glands. This can be common for
those with RA and or sjogrens syndrome. I have had similar problems
and so has KJ. The slaiva glands can get inflammed, swollen, and quite
painful. Usually the treatment for this type of thing is warm
compresses, sucking on something sour such as lemon drops to help
increase the flow of saliva, etc.
Of course, it could also be a virus like the doctors suggested. I
think if it were me, and I was feeling up to it, I would want to get
back to my own doctors who know me and who I trust to have them look at
things.
Sure hope you get to feeling better real soon Ashley!

I had crap like that years ago when a sinus infection spread everywhere - the
upshot from my GP and the ENT he sent me to was that everything was
congested, including all those glands that get it when you have the mumps (my
GP's first question was "did you ever have the mumps?) I imagine the same
thing can happen with a virus. They slammed me with Sudafed and had me using
moist heat on the more congested areas. Breathing in steam helps a lot too,
even more so if you have stuff to put in the steam.
Keep an eye on things - I'd think the big concern would be if it turns out to
be bacterial rather than viral - or if it becomes bacterial.
