OK, have been having some strange symptoms pop up every time I get
really sick.
Seems like right after I have gone through a period of being really
sick, I develop this problem of having very strong hot flashes for a
while. I can just be sitting there doing nothing and will get all
flushed and break out into a major sweat. It is sooooo uncomfortable
and often I either go out on the balcony to cool off, stick my head in
the freezer, or will go sit on the bathtub edge and run cold water over
my feet to try and cool off. I literally have to change my clothes as
I get soaked from the sweating.
I know this is probably a totally harmless symptom, but am wondering if
anyone else gets this and if they do, do they know what causes it?
I don't know if it is from the extra steroids? maybe the adrenal
glands doing something funny? thyroid issues? just the bodies way of
reacting to illness and antibiotics? Anyone have any ideas??? Anyone
else with these symptoms or am I the only one whos body does these weird
things???

Have you been on prednisone when this happens? It happens to me fairly
often. Either if I'm ill and try to do too much. Or when I've been taking
even a small amount of prednisone because I've been ill.

I have had 2 cortisone shots in my heel for plantar faciitis and both times
I woke up the next morning red faced and flushed. By days end I was back to
normal. The shots were 4 weeks apart. I called the podiatrist the first time
and she said she hadn't heard of that type of reaction before.
My heel is still very painful so I don't know what I'll do next.

I'm on five days of IV steroids (1 Gram a day) and my face is very flushed,
mostly on one side, the side the IV is on. Don't remember this happening before
but it seems definitely related to the intravenous med. At first I thought it
was sinus as an area over my cheek often becomes inflamed when that sinus is
affected, but this is more than that and my sinus is pretty quiet at the moment.

I am on high dose steroids and I am doing the same thing. I was wondering
the other night if I was going through the change. I think it is prednisone.

Donna,
I've had the same exact thing happen to me this winter!! Now, as you
know, I'm heading into menopause and have had hot flashes for a few
years now....BUT I swear, anytime I'm sick, I have the nastiest hot
flahes. They were awful this winter and into March....of course, I've
gone through 3 different URI's. I was just telling a friend this
weekend that since I've been over the URI's, I haven't been getting
the hot flashes like I was.
Also, about a month ago, I was having night sweats to the point where
I'd literally have to get up and change my pajamas because I was
soaking wet! I also had an URI at the same time.
I thought my arm may have something to do with it and maybe it was the
combination of my body trying to heal this bone and the URI's. My arm
sweats like crazy since my surgery, but I don't know how the hot
flashes could have been related to that.
Since I started having hot flashes, I've noticed that sometimes if I'm
stressed, I'll get more of them and they're sometimes more intense.
And when I'm in (what I call) a hot flash phase, if I raise my voice
to yell at the dogs, I'll go right into a hot flash. I had some
really strong ones a couple of years ago when my BP was elevated, but
I've not had intense ones like this winter since back then....and I've
never had the night sweats before!
Maybe you're starting into peri-menopause. It sure sounds like it.
Your description of what happens sounds very similar to a typical hot
flash. Does it seem to first start as a warm sensation in your face
and/or head and then moves up as it gets more intense like something's
going to shoot out the top of your head? LOL And you feel like you've
got to cool off immediately?? It's a strange and uncomfortable
feeling, especially when you first get them and don't know what they
are. I think there's some relationship between a sudden drop or
increase in hormone levels and your immune system.

Cool off immediately... I kept thinking if I could just
rip all my clothes off and run naked down the street in
the middle of the winter that maybe, just maybe, I
would feel better. Sometimes I just settled for going
on to the porch in the dead of winter and standing
there. In the summer, I opened the freezer and stuck my
head inside. Peri-menopause was far worse than after
menopause. After they want to give you something.
Before my GYN said I didn't need anything. I just kept
saying quietly under my breathe, one day lady your time
will come. bwhaaaaaa
I took vitamin E capsules which really helped me
through it all. I started with 100mg and that worked
for several years and then I kept having to increase
the dose. Lived on 800mg for a long time. When I came
off it for surgery [Vit E thins the blood] I discovered
I didn't need it anymore so stopped taking it. Back to
now whatever is in my multi-vitamin.

Donna
I get these hot and sweaty flashes very often. They are very embarrassing.
when I have one my clothes are wet and my hair is dripping wet. I don't know
what the cause. I am diabetic and thought at first my sugar was dropping or
elevated. I have taken my bg and it is neither hi or low. I am not on any
steroids but many other meds. pain meds nsaids and others. did ask my doctor
about them and he really didn't have an explanation. I am past menopause so
I know it is not those hot flashes.
I do know one thing, I can sympathize with you for sure. I wish I knew
what caused them. maybe nerves? exhaustion , sure would like to know. don't
care how cold it is I still sweat.
hope you can find your cause and get some relief.

I don't know if I will be of much help. I get hot flashes (if I don't
get a period) because I'm peri-menopausal. Sometimes it even kicks in
if I have something hot to drink, sometimes wine does it. I can get
them if I get stressed. I don't know if your flashes are related to
the same triggers but I do know how uncomfortable they are. Hot
flashes take all the energy out of you.
Peri-menopause symtoms can start when you're guite young.

Thanks all for your responses. What ever it is that is going on, is
definitely NOT menopause. I had a hysterectomy and both ovaries
removed surgically several years ago. The sudden hot flashes,
flushing, heavy sweating, night sweats seem to come on right after a
period of being quite ill. Sounds like it could be from the extra
steroids according to some of your experiences. I don't know if other
hormones in the body can get whacked out from being really sick or if it
is maybe just the bodies reaction to the increased steroids and/or
antibiotics. It sure is miserable and I have to agree with Duckie,
makes you want to just rip off your clothes in the middle of winter and
go running through the snow. I have gone out on my balcony in my bare
feet in the snow just to cool off. Today I turned on my a/c for an
hour or two. I'm sure the neighbors thought I was nuts, but I couldn't
stand the flushing and the sweat rolling off my face! Yikes! It
usually does go away after a few weeks, but it sure is miserable when
you are in the midst of it. Sure wish I knew of a better way to
control it!

Have you had thyroid checked. Hot flashes can be from that also. another
thing that comes to mind is blood sugar levels. I know when I have been ill
something sets mine off too. I have been having more sweating, heart
palpatations, etc with the thyroid stuff. It is so hard now to tell which
one is doing what. ;-)
I hope you get it figured out. Yes from what I have been reading on the
thyroid group that could be a symptom of low adrenals also.

Love and hugs to all
