FDA Says Inhalers Using Chlorofluorocarbons to
Dispense Albuterol Will Be Banned at End of 2008

March 31, 2005 7:41 AM

WASHINGTON --  Inhalers using chlorofluorocarbons to
dispense the drug albuterol will be banned at the end
of 2008, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.

CFCs, once widely used as aerosol propellants in a
variety of products, have been removed from use because
they can damage the Earth's protective ozone layer.

Their use with albuterol, which helps prevent wheezing,
shortness of breath and troubled breathing caused by
asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, had been
exempted from the ban.

The FDA said Thursday, however, that by December 31, 2008,
there will be sufficient supplies of albuterol inhalers
using environmentally friendly propellants.  As of that
date, inhalers using CFC can no longer be produced,
marketed or sold in the United States.

Don't get me started on this subject. The inhaler I use
now is that round purple disc which fills your mouth
with disgusting powder which has to be rinsed. Had a
devil of a time with the idiots at the nursing home,
first opening the thing sideways [which releases the
drug into the air] and then not knowing that it was to
be rinsed immediately from the mouth. I kept trying to
explain that the powder they could see was not the drug
but the delivery agent. That stuff makes my throat raw
unless I manage to rinse before I release my breath.
So all asthmatics are ruining the ozone but the diesel
trucks spewing black exhaust are not. Nor any of the
large manufacturing plants or .....
See, told you not to get me started.

And and....There is one called Combivent...And both drugs my husband can
take alone..But combine them in combivent and the aersol or whatever makes
it come out...He has an allergic reaction to...It is suppose to help him, it
does the opposite..Makes him cough more..So is this the new and improved
delivery system that they are speaking of...I don't know without some
research...And if anyone is using Advair...be sure to rinse your mouth well
afterwards and Mike also rinses with mouthwash..As it can cause yeast
infections in the mouth...
Kind of like Duckie here...Don't get me started..

Yep that is it, Advair. Can you imagine an elder person
not being allowed to rinse because the one nurse
dispensing meds had no clue what she was doing. I take
4 asthma drugs now where I used to take one. And with
all this dust I have kicked up packing for the move --
they are barely doing the trick. grrrrrr  cough, cough
