Glucosamine and bleeding

I note at one on-line site it says:

"If you are taking chondroitin or glucosamine sulfate in addition to a
blood-thinning medication or daily aspirin therapy, have your blood
clotting time checked more often. This supplement is similar in
structure to the blood-thinning drug heparin, and the combination may
cause bleeding in some people."

I've been taking glucosamine for some ten days now and, for the first
time, noticed a trace of blood in my saliva first thing this morning. It
might be coming from the back of my nose. I've been taking a baby
aspirin every day for years now. The bleeding seems to have stopped now,
a few hours later.

What do you think? Stop the glucosamine or the aspirin? Cut back on
aspirin to a half or every other day? The glucosamine seems to be
helping my osteo- arthritis so I am reluctant to stop it.

Last night I took a couple of Excedrin for a headache too, something I
rarely do. Too much on top of the daily aspirin and glocosamine?

Finally, I'm recovering from a cold as well.

Thoughts, anyone?

call your doctor asap.  you might have a sinus infection.  or, you might be
having a reaction to the combination of things you are taking.  or it might
be nothing.  better to ask your doctor and have him/her figure it out.

I'm very interested to know more details about this, but I have never
heard anything of the sort about glucosamine and I suspect that this is
an unsubstatiated claim on the website you came across. Which website
was it printed on?

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

I'll chime in along the same lines.  My first cardiologist started me on
statins (currently Lipitor 80mg), and the next one soon after started me
on aspirin 325mg.  Two or three years ago I added
glucosamine/chondroitin (typically 1000mg-1500mg glucosamine) with the
knowledge of my PCP.  None of them warned me, nor have I seen anything
in writing about potential problems caused by the combination.
Hopefully you can discuss it with your doctor and set you mind at ease.

I don't recall. It was was one of the first ones I came to in Google
searching on glucosamine sulfate.

I've done some research, and this claim seems wrong. From what I
understand, heparin (there are many heparinoid compounds) is made from
long chains of glucosamine of slightly different chemical structures. I
don't see supplemental glucosamine magically turning into heparin,
though. I've come across some speculation that there might be an
interaction between heparin and chondroitin or glucosamine, but nothing
remotely substantiated. I'll ask my haematologist on Thursday if he has
heard anything like this.

I'd like to add to my post. Since restarting the glucosamine a couple of
weeks ago, I've seen an increase in petechia and bruising. My extremely
low platelet counts are still in the same extremely low range. I have
been sick from at least one viral infection during this time and there
have been other medication changes, so keep this in mind. However, I
have to wonder, does glucosamine in even very short polymers have a
heparin like effect, and are these very short polymers present in over
the counter glucosamine supplements? For me in particular, these are
VERY important questions. I'm going to speak with my doctor about this
and do some further research. Until then, I'm discontinuing my
glucosamine hydrochloride supplementation.

Ken,

It might be from your sinusis.  Need to call your doc to make sure though.
I wouldn't panic yet.

As I posted, the bleeding stopped, and hasn't resumed. I'm not going to the
doctor about a few drops of blood. I've had much much worse without a visit
and survived. I can't afford all the blood tests and specialist visits they
usually entail.

I very very rarely go to the doctor. Haven't been in many years. Things
usually resolve themselves.

I'll repeat (as other probably will):  Call your doctor.
