Warning - exhausted OA whine to follow.....

If you remember, about a month ago I fell on the ice - twice in one week.
Well, even though I didn't land directly on my knees, or even get a bruise,
it's been rapidly downhill ever since.  Today I just wanted to sit down and
not have to stand up again until it was all better.  Thank goodness my
appointment is tomorrow because the really bad knee is just throbbing.  The
right knee can handle another round of Synvisc shots but the left knee?  I'd
very much prefer not to get shots in that knee ever again.  It was pretty
hellish the last time.  You know it was an awful experience when surgery
seems like the gentler option.  My doc is very understanding and up to date
so I know she'll have some good suggestions.

I've tried all the pain relief methods i can think of.  I'm tired, my knees
are deeply tired and I'm maxed out the NSAIDs (and boy can I tell when they
are wearing off).  I'd probably get all teary eyes too if it didn't take
energy or mean getting up for a kleenex.   I miss my vioxx  :-(

Great Big Sigh.  I know I'm lucky the OA is really bad in just 2 joints,
that it could be more, that my problems are small compared with starving
kids, wars and worse.  I just feel so self-focused tonight.

Thanks for listening.

Katherine,  bad pain in "just" two joints can make you feel like the pain is
all over your body.  Bad pain is bad pain, and nobody wants it!  My
sympathy.  Hope your RD has good ideas tomorrow.

Thanks Gwen,  I appreciate that.  I'm going to climb into bed, arrange
pillows and hopefully get some decent sleep.  Funny how my attitude improves
with some rest

((((((((((Kath))))))))))))

I'm sorry to hear about your knees.  Have you tried Mobic instead of Vioxx?
I couldn't take vioxx so I tried Mobic and had no side effects and got good
relief.  This might help until you can get the relief you seek.

I think that may be what she gave me today, except she called it Mobicox.
It was a good appointment today.  My doc listened to my frustrated venting
while checking my knees and called it a OA/RA flare.  When I said the right
knee could wait a couple more months for treatment she gave it another once
over, referred me for massage and (with a "first things first" voice) said
"we have to get the pain sorted out so you can sleep"  I love this lady.
She started me on the Mobicox (sp?) to get the inflamation down and I go
back for a cortisone shot in the bursis-something on Monday and she'll check
it again.  The week after that I start another series of Synvisc, except
this time she suggested trying orthovisc as it might avoid the nasty
reaction I had last time  .  She also said that it will be a long while
before I'm a candidate for surgey so at least I can put that out of my mind
and deal with now

So, by noon I was headed for the pharmacy with 3 perscriptions and 4 joint
needles in four weeks in my future.  An hour later the mobic had made the
day a bit better.  I'm still very tired but at least I feel a little more
postive and a lot less scared.

Thanks Nann   :)

You know, I finally bought a cane yesterday too.  I've been denying it for
awhile and some of them look so awful.  While I was waiting for the
perscription to be filled I decided it was time I got over it and took
another look.  Stuck in the middle of the rack was this stylish looking
burgundy one with gold flecks that I knew was "the one" as soon as I laid
eyes on it.  Adjusted it as suggested here and stood there feeling tall and
strong.  I may carve out the grip to fit a little nicer but I walked out of
the drug store with a can't-wait-to use-this feeling.  Now I'm wondering why
I waited so long  lol!

wrong cane?  heehee

I am still using my cane in the mall and grocery. I got
so used to it. Did you know that if you find a really
heavy door [all businesses have them now] that that
cane will take the pressure out of holding that heavy
door while you sneak through. Just open, put the cane
tip on the floor and let the door close to it -- tah
tah. For some reason you would think it would knock the
cane or the cane would get heavy but it doesn't.
Then there is the grocery store - I am short - defying
trick. That handle is handy for getting all items
located three stories above my head. And for some
reason all healthy items are located three stories up.
Now if I wanted fruit loops....
Enjoy your new cane.

Oops, my bad!  Duckie, I think I sent my response to you  instead of the
group.  Isn't the penalty for that handing over a chocolate bar?  (grin)

My GP has just prescribed Lodine (etodolac).
Any comments ? Is it any good. Does it affect your gut ?
I have been taking diclofen for about 20 years and he would like to get
me off it. Occasionally I take a celebrex just to show Pfizer that
there is no ill feeling !

Thanks.  I actually got some proper sleep last night and I'm sitting here
now waiting for the mobic to kick in.  My perspective on things is a little
better today even tho the knees are busy throbbing.  It will be while before
they feel less painful but knowing it will happen helps
