RD appointment today

It's been a few months, and I've got a shopping list of ailments that I
want to discuss with him.  The PA no longer works there, and that makes
me sad, because I liked seeing her more than Dr. B.

Worst on my list are my left elbow and left knee.  I haven't written
about them here, because I just mostly lurk these days.  Anyway, I'm
suspecting that this is a systemic everything-hurts kind of tendinitis.
I do have chronic golfer's elbow in both elbows, but my left one is
nasty.

My knee is lousy too.  I'm suspecting more than tendonitis there,
though.  I'm suspecting some OA, at the very least.  Same with my right
hip.  I dunno.  I'm miserable.  My neck, hips, wrists, elbows,
shoulders, back, feet, heels.  I'm not going to work today.  I don't
feel like fighting for parking, which is another dumbass story.

God, I hate arthritis..............

let's see, don't you have PA?  I ask because a recent issue of the NPF's
"Psoriasis Advance" publication states:

"Psoriatic arthritis also differs [from RA] because the intial pathology
(beginning of the disease) is in the enthesis rather than in the synovium.
The enthesis is where the tendons, ligaments and connective tissue (fascia)
inflame where they connect to the bone."

Sure fits with what you say about your elbow - and with the periodic trouble
I have with mine.

Hey, can you see RDs at the Hospital for Special Surgery?  The RD I really
liked at Harvard is there now - Lisa Mandl.  I highly recommend her to anyone
looking for an RD in NYC.

Let us know how the appointment goes.

You've got that right, at the outset my Derm sent me because my knuckles
were swollen but no where near as sore as my Achilles tendon.  My RD at that
time explained the connective tissue aspect of the disease.  I thought I had
injured it doing aerobics (did those in the days when I was anorexic) and
was relatively pain free.

Achilles tendinitis, or enthesiopathy, has become one of the banes of my
existence.  Makes walking quite the challenge some times.  I wear
orthotics to try to alleviate the pain (amongst other reasons), but I'm
not sure it works very well for that.

Yeah, that's the deal with this kind of spondy.  It's so linked to
tendon issues, that most of my problems are really tendon related.
Along with OA, and bursitis.

I would love to see D. Mandl.  But, it's kind of far, and I'm kind of
settled in with Dr. Bennett.  If you guys who have access to the
Arthritis Today magazine, you'd see that one of the docs who advises for
the magazine is Dr. Ronald Bennett, the one and the same that I see.
He's kind of a tough character, but I've learned to really like him over
the years.  As a matter of fact, if he wasn't my doc, I could see us
being good friends.  I was his last appt yesterday, so we sat and
chatted for a while afterwards, about his practice, politics, my work,
computers.  I enjoy talking to him.

> Let us know how the appointment goes.

It was a good appt.  I'm now taking a pred burst to calm down the
inflammation.  I don't know what my sed rate is from yesterday's
bloodwork, but two months ago, it was 29.  Not off the scales, by any
stretch, but slightly elevated.  I'm going to call today to find out
what my sed rate is now.  And, of course, I'll keep ya'll posted.  :-)

Oh, that's cool then.  I guess I misinterpreted your statement about liking
to see the PA more - doesn't necessarily mean you don't like the doc!  sure
hope the pred helps a lot.  I rarely have an elevated sedrate myself, but my
good RDs have gone more by the clinical exam and it sounds like yours does
too.  Thank goodness for thinking RDs!

BTW, how are things going at the job these days?  Or should I not ask?

I didn't like my doc for quite a while, actually.  I was contemplating
switching docs, and we had words, but when the dust settled, and he
hired the PA, I chose to stay.  Then, I decided that I do like him.
And, I think he is a good doc.  Kind of an abrupt personality that takes
some getting used to, I suppose.

Now, for the job front................
My job is going GREAT!  Did you think you'd ever think I'd be saying
that?  <g>  When Dave died last year, I thought it was the end of the
world.  He was a great supervisor, a great person, and I still miss him.

When he was dying, if you remember, I got that dipshit Barry as my boss
again.  The same dipshit who suspended me for that trumped up porn
charge.  Which I beat, by the way.  We settled out of court, and I was
completely exxonerated, getting my back pay and benefits, and my record
cleared. I found out that the agency settled because they were
protecting Barry, who was staring down the barrel of a two week
suspension for an illegal personnel practice, that being retalliation
against a whistleblower. That's OK.  I still won.  But, this past
January, that dickhead became the general superintendent at Gateway
National Recreation Area.  He's gone, gone, gone.  I do NOT miss him one
iota.  That lowlife sack of garbage.

Our new superintendent is great.  Fabulous.  He actually told me that he
thinks that blowing the whistle was a very brave thing to do.  Imagine
that.  He gets it.  And, he's a great supervisor to work for.  He also
told me that I should rightly be a GS-13, instead of a GS-12 (grade and
salary status - higher is better, up to GS-15, then there are higher
series in the Executive branch, ie GM or SES).  I told him that any time
he wants to give me an upgrade, don't let me stop him.  <bg>

Life on the job front is going really well.  Thanks for asking.  :-)

How wonderful!  It must be such a joy to have that scumbucket out of there
and how delightful that you got another good supervisor.  'Bout time.

I love my RD's PA as well. I am going to miss them both
when we move.
Did he have suggestions about what to do next?

Di, how about joining me for the evening?  I'm in bad ache mode too.  We can
skip the chocolate and head straight for the Baileys.

The least you guys could have done was invited me before I started in on the
little white pills!

One of those days.

You talking 'bout pred?  cuz, I'm now taking those nasty, horrible
tasting, lil' white pills.  I'll be truckin' for the next couple of days
to a week.  I'll need the Bailey's to slow me down.  <g>

Not this time.  I'm taking Dilaudid (morphine) for pain a lot of evenings.
Prednisone
doesn't touch this one (an unbelievably sore finger)

Oh Di, I feel your pain. I am hoping you stop flaring quickly. I am
wondering if you have cold symptoms. There is a virus going around that
makes you flare big time. I hope you are pain free as soon as can be.
Thinking of you alot.

Thank you, Jo.  No, I don't have a virus that I know about.  I think
this is just your average run-of-the-mill flare.

I called the lab today, and found out that my sed rate went down from 29
two months ago to 23.  Some people say that a sed rate isn't really a
good indication of pain and inflammation, and the way I feel is sure
indicative of that.

One thing my RD is very insistent on is that I get an ergonomic keyboard
because of the pain in my elbows.  I hate those things.  However, I did
stop at Staple's yesterday and found the Microsoft wireless keyboard
comfort edition to be really quite comfortable.  It doesn't have as
severe a split as a standard ergo keyboard, and the keys feel very
smooth.  It's pricy, though.  Staple's sells them for $80.00, so I
waited till I got home and ordered it from Amazon for $65.00, no tax and
free shipping.  I'm also going to get one for my office, but have Uncle
Sam pay for it.  :-)

Amazingly enough, after one full day of pred burst, and two Ultracets
today, my elbows and my knee feel a bit better.  But, the fatigue is
awful.  I'm sure the Ultracet isn't helping that at all, though.  Like
Johnnie says, "ya gotta do what ya gotta do......"
