Had an appointment with my RD today and decided to tell him exactly how I
had been feeling and hurting---my hands, feet, and particularly my back. He
took 5 xrays of my back, 2 of my feet, and did a dexa scan. He said my bone
density really looked very well (I assume for my age). My feet are full of
OA just like my hands. I have DDD in upper and lower spine, and scoliosis,
and something else about my spine that I can't remember. After driving 2
hours to get there and having the xrays & scan, I was so tired I wasn't
thinking too well. We decided I will try arthrotec to see if I can take it.
Unfortunately he didn't have any samples so I just get to add to my medicine
bill each month! I had a pity party on the way home, because I am (like so
many of you) so tired of hurting. All of this plus still hurting from my
rotator cuff repair is just more than I would like to have right now.
My question is--doesn't scoliosis start in childhood? If so, why do I find
out I have it at 76 years old? He said my spine was a series of s's. That
makes the muscles all unbalanced and explains the pain when I turn over in
bed, or get out of a chair, or get out of bed in the mornings, or turn the
wrong way. I had a full length back xray about
15 years ago and heard nothing about scoliosis at that time. I'm confused!

Oh, you poor sweet thing. I had also thought Scoliosis was begun in
childhood, so I did a quick little search.
Apparently, it can occur anytime in your life. One site I looked at
had this: In other instances, adult scoliosis can be caused by the
degenerative changes of the spine. Other spinal deformities such as
kyphosis or round back are associated with the common problem of
osteoporosis (bone softening) involving the elderly. As more and more
people reach old age in the U.S., the incidence of scoliosis and
kyphosis is expected to increase.
Actually, the whole page was pretty interesting:

Hope this helps a little.

Gwen: I'm so sorry you are hurting. No wonder you are confused after
that long ride and the xrays. I also thought scoliosis started early in
life. Thank you Smokie Darlin for the heads up on the site. I have
never had an answer for all my back pain except for a couple of bulging
disks. Going to read it all now.
Hope you feel a bit better tomorrow, Gwen.

Thank you Annnie. That answers my question! I guess the other problems
with my spine have caused the scoliosis. Don't suppose there's anything to
do for it at this late date except take pain medicines, huh. My DIL
suggested I ask about having a doctor prescribe massages so I could get them
from insurance (at least partly). I am going to mention it to my therapist
tomorrow as she told me last week I needed a massage because my muscles were
so tight. While she was stretching my arm, would have a catch in my muscles
on the way up and then on the way back down. Also the backs of my shoulders
were very tight. Boy, one would feel good about now.

((((((((((Gwen)))))))))) you deserved a pity party! We have lots of nice
cheese in our fridge, thanks to a recent visit to a local cheese factory so
do you have a preferred type to go with your whine?
Did he suggest anything else to help with your back problems? From what you
say, I'd think that PT might really help by building up the muscles to
support the back in its proper position. Can't do much for the DDD, but they
should be able to help straighten out any inappropriate s's.

Nann, I talked to my therapist today and she said normally the side inside
the C would need strengthening, but with mine in a series of s's, that both
sides would need working on. I may call Dr. Saway and ask about PT. I've
had bad pain on each side below my shoulder blades for a long time and
couldn't imagine what was causing it, but now i guess that was also the
scoliosis. And I'll take any kind of cheese! Thanks.

I had one of those weeks and am just now rediscovering posts I never replied
to despite my best intentions! It sounds like your therapist already had an
idea of what your back would need. The joy of PT over doing other stuff at
home is a good therapist moves you forward slowly. Of course the flip side
of that is that just as things are getting comfortable they make you kick it
up a notch! LOL I know you've been there plenty before. I had a lot of fun
teasing my therapists about them "being mean to me" this last go-round.
There's a great friendly atmosphere at that place.
Anywya, PT would be a good investment if it reduces all the discomfort some
and it sounds like you have a good PT already.

So sorry to hear you are hurting so much. I hope there is something that
can be done for the scoliosis pain.

Sorry that you are hurting so much. The addition of a new med can really
hurt the wallet. I can not type much I have been hurting in my hands so this
will be short.
Take care ok?
