Stopping Enbrel temporarily

Bob - 08 Mar 2005 20:44 GMT Hi all. I came down with a nasty respiratory infection over the last couple of days. Called my rheumy doc and he said to stop the Enbrel injections immediatly until it clears up. He said to not stop the MTX injections though. He scared me when he said, "We don't want that to turn into pneumonia so stop the Enbrel."
Since on Enbrel it seems I have been fatigued and kind of cold all the time. Could that be true or is just my imagination?
DiWitt - 08 Mar 2005 21:07 GMT I had a bad cold which turned to pneumonia in only 2 days in January. I'm still trying to get the resulting sinus infection cleared up. I'm on my 4th and 5th antibiotic. Have bronchitis again as well. No Enbrel since early January. Not fun.

Especially since my doc said to get off of it so I would not get pneumonia. I think maybe the MTX was doing good enough for me. I see him in a couple of weeks again and we are going to have a heart to heart.

Hi, I can only tell you my experience with flu, walking pneumonia and Enbrel. I took one two many Enbrel shots after I had the flu and recovered from that almost and it went into serious lung problems. I am still not a hundred percent from all that and I am going to take an Enbrel shot today which means that it has been two weeks and two days since the last shot. The good thing about ENBREL for me is that it catches up quick. I hope it works out better for you than it did for me. I did not handle this too well. I should of taken one shot less and started the anti-biotic medicines, shots sooner. We live and learn. Harv

Just jumping in to ask about stopping Enbrel. I have had to stop mine, prior to surgery, and I was wondering about others' experiences. How long does it take for any flaring to kick in? They want me to stop two weeks before, and for a minimum of two weeks after surgery.

I hope I don't flare, as I can't imagine its much fun wrestling with crutches with sore hands and shoulders, but I have noticed that I feel extremely fatigued this week. Fingers crossed!

When I'm recovered from that, I'm going on the list for the right knee, so lots to look forward to this year!

It wasn't much fun for a couple of days, but I am very glad to be home, even though the physio is really hard.

Caroline Marold - 09 Mar 2005 22:50 GMT Did that in nov. before my TKR with my Remicade and Arava. By time of surgery I was one hurting, stiff, slow moving puppy. Good news was that surgery came with pain meds so I lived. :) Kept having stuff I needed antibiotics for so keep having to stop and start the Arava and it was a long while before I got my Remicade back. Tell your doctor you may need pain meds prior to surgery as your medication clears your body. And good luck Duckie

Many patients seem to be having varying side effects. Some docs are beginning to question their overall efficacy and safety. I too might ? the safety. They drug companies say it's just like insulin. I don't really buy that. Same family, proven track record and efficacy no way. I personally think more studies are needed. Bruce

Could that be true or is just my imagination? Bob - 10 Mar 2005 14:58 GMT Thanks everyone. I am off to see my main doc in an hour. Will keep you posted. Four days after skipping my last scheduled Enbrel injection and just barely starting to feel better. I actually lost my voice at one point and pretty much stayed in bed all day yesterday. I think my immune system got whalloped by the Enbrel. I am honestly kind of afraid to start it back up as long as the MTX does a reasonable job of controlling my RA.

That might just be from the virus normally. For almost a decade now I've lost my voice at some point with every respiratory bug I've gotten. Sometimes I don't feel that bad, but lose my voice as I'm recovering. It was a big problem when I worked a job that involoved lots and lots of talking.
I don't know what the crud is that's going around our area, but folks are relapsing left and right. They think they're over it and it comes back and wallops them. Maybe that's what's going on with you. It's miserablet folks do recover eventually.

RoseB - 11 Mar 2005 00:59 GMT It could also be a flare of RA causing the voice loss. Remember we can geat RA in our larynx just as we get it in our joints. My voice is often terrible. I have been scoped twice and all they say is my vocal chords are inflamed due to RA and acid reflux.

Could you tell me what you are doing differently which might cause this loss of voice. <G> Cooly
