I have been referred to your group following a 2-month long period of
low back pain.   First time I ever experienced that particular pain,
although multiple X-rays show severe arthritis in almost every joint in
my poor aching body!

I have been going to a spine clinic.  What a remarkable place it is!   I
do mild exercises there, attended by a 25-year old Amazon!  Then they
give me exercises to do at home.  They really do help me a lot.

I take Vicodin for pain.   I was on a very heavy schedule, but it was
"messin' up my head," so I (yes, "I" myself!) reduced it to two 500-mg
tabs a day.  Keeps the pain at a bearable state, while leaving my
76-year old head relatively clear.

Anyway, what I want to know is  --  can I come in and play?

Hi Renee,
I'm one of the official lurkers these days and only pop my head up once in a
while.
Sorry to hear of your back trouble. I am in a similar condition, but at 55.
Hope you can stick around. It is a fine group of people. Only, you have to
put your chocolate into a safe deposit box to protect it from those that
would rather have it than you. There are many here that fit that description
and will vehemently deny it. I'm not one of them of course!

Hi Renee,,   You are most welcome here.  When I was having lower back
problem for about two years,,, the thing that helped me the most was doing
stretches before I got out of bed for the day ahead.   Slowly bring your
knee toward your chest and stop at any point there is sharp pain and hold
the leg as high as you can go toward the chest for a 5 count and lower the
leg and do the same thing with the other leg.  Switch back and forth about
3-5 times and when you get out of bed,,, roll out with bent knees and bring
yourself upright without stressing your lower back.

Good Morning Renee,
And welcome to the Sand Box...I have OA in about every joint in my body
also, and suffer from Fibromyalgia as well...My worst pain is in my knees,
feet and hands...But sometimes the back doesn't like me either...
I take Lortab 7.5 as needed for pain..Usually 2 to 3 a day, but now and
again, I have to take all 4 and when I am really flaring...I might take
5....
I do more lurking than posting, but I am always here praying and thinking of
each of my friends here...
This is a wonderful place for support and love...
Yes, you do have to hide your Chocolate.....

Welcome to the sandbox, Renee.  Be sure to remove all the sand before you
get anywhere near the pool though.  And the entrance fee is chocolate and I
take it up as you come in; don't give it to anyone else.  As another 76 year
old lady, we should find much to talk about besides our arthritis, so
welcome.

Hi Renee
you are certainly welcome here with rest of us gimps. It is a great [lace to
be if you need support.  I feel about like you with OA in about every joint.
I am 64. I too take a lot of pain meds but if i didnt I couldnt function at
all. What I take does not seem to affect my brain too bad. sometimes just
cant get enough sleep though, so that may be a side effect. again welcome
and hope some of your days will be as pain free as possible, soft hugs to
you.
where do you live Renee?

Welcome to the sandbox, Renee :)

I know what you mean about the Vicodin. I took it a couple of years ago
when I tore my meniscus in my knee, and I had the same experience. I was
glad when I didn't have to take it anymore.

And of course you can come and play with us :)  Just be careful of your
chocolate as there are a lot of chocolate addicts here :)))))

How long did you have problems with the torn meniscus and how was it
resolved? Did you have arthroscopic surgery?
My sister has been having problems with her knee and it is likely a
torn meniscus. It has been a few months though and there has been
limited improvement.

It started in June. I went bike riding and I was fine after that, but
then when I went to walk up the stairs in the school the following day,
the pain started. It lasted until October. One day it just stopped
hurting. It did start to get better when I was taking glucosamine
chondriotin. I know that's supposed to be for arthritis and I was taking
it for the arthritis in my knee, but I think somehow it helped the
meniscus as well. No surgery for me. My recent trip to the hospital for
the heart cath was my first time in a hospital since the day I was born :)

Not the Carole, but I finally had to have surgery on my
torn meniscus. When he got inside, doctor said I would
need the knee replaced in 1-10 years. I made it 1.5.
Not sure the pain was all torn meniscus now. More like
an indicator that something was wrong. My SIL had a
torn meniscus and had it operated on and is back
playing soccer so without any underlying causes, your
sister should bounce back. The meniscus has no blood
supply so healing on it's own is tricky at least that
was what I was told.

Thanks Carolie and Carole.
Forwarded  both responses to my sister.
She is seeing a surgeon next month to look into arthroscopic surgery.

Welcome Renee.
Hide your chocolate cause even DeeTee will try and take
it now. Nothing is sacred anymore. sigh

Yes, and hold on tightly to your chocolate.  This group mugs all newcomers
and takes their chocolate away.  I'm pretty safe in that I prefer jaw
breakers to melt in my mouth.  Now.....if you happen to have any Reese's
Peanut Butter cups - well, let's just say I've discovered them and am trying
very hard to stay away from them since they won't contribute to my attempt
to lose an extra person of fat.

Whew, what a long-winded way to say hello!

Ohmigoodness!   Am I in the right place?  This seems to be a group
meeting of Chocoholics Not-So-Anonymous!   I have to admit that I do
love it, especially See's Candies chocolate chips!  (So Calif!)

BUT I have found a way to handle that overwhelming hunger (if you want
to handle it, which I sometimes don't!).   I have found that my desire
for chocolate goes down exponentially as my consumption of fresh fruit
goes up!

And isn't that a sweet idea!

Renee

PS:  Thanks for the advice, Harv!   Now I understand what The Amazon has
been trying to tell me!

Also, we have been kind of playing with the idea of wheatless meals  --
more difficult than it sounds, as it seems that everything has wheat in
it!

If you ever visit Ethyl M's Chocolate Factory and Cactus Garden
in Henderson, abutting Las Vegas, you will never be able to look
at another See's store without wondering how you could stomach
that trash.

WARNING:  Avoid King Leo Chocolates in SoCal.

Ethyl M's has an extremely large variety of chocolates.   AND
it has alcohol-filled varities, if you're so inclined.   The place
is a stop on Greylines' tours.  Often see half a dozen tour
buses in the parking lot.

You can take a self-guided tour of the cactus garden, then
enter through a gift shop where you begin a guided tour of
the chocolate factory (not much to see on weekends).  On
a weekday, you can view how upside down shells are filled
with cremes before the bottoms are attached.

Exit the tour into a sales room where you'll be offerred
samples of everything except the alcohol filled goodies.

I've had it since 1977 - diagnosed with anyklosing spondylitis.

But have you seen a rheumatologist - a specialist in arthritis?

What did you have in mind?   <g>   A chocolate party?

Welcome, Renee!  I was recently helped much with my cervical spine by two
lovely physical therapists, one of whom is one of those naturally
disgustingly thin people!  I'm going through withdrawal right now.  It's the
first time in my life that I've been a bit nervous about leaving PT!  They
assured me that I can call them any time though, heehee.

Got a couple of folks here who are in PT for lower backs - like me they have
fallen in love with the traction table.

Oh, if no one's warned you let - look out for Kenny in the hot tub.  He has
this tendency to lose his red shorts......  And, while it is sacrilege to say
it here, please don't give me your dark chocolate to keep!  I just got myself
back on the diet, lost a couple of pounds last week and I doubt I could
resist it!
