Memory foam?

JA - 05 Mar 2005 15:53 GMT Has anyone here tried a memory foam mattress topper? I need something softer for my side of the bed and have been looking at the 2" memory foam mattress toppers--the 1" was a lot cheaper but it didn't seem like anything that thin would do the job. Is memory foam any good, or is it just the latest fad? I'm not interested in replacing the entire mattress because it's in great shape and my husband thinks it's extremely comfortable. So, my strategy is to try to come up with a soft top layer for my side.
Thanks, JA

I need something > softer [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > Thanks, > JA Back before I bought my current bed, we had a "nice" mattress set. After about a year, my DH bought a mattress topper of memory foam (I think it's 2"). It worked rather well. It does make the bed "softer" (I get hip bruises easily).
In fact we still have it, topping our new bed (okay the bed is 1.5 yrs old now). I've noticed that it seems to hold up better with me rotating it every time I change the sheets (every two weeks). However, since I have always rotated it, I don't know for certain if that is necessary.

belinda75 - 05 Mar 2005 16:11 GMT JA, I got a king size novaform topper from linen "n things in Oct. It was $200.00. I price temperpedic(spelling) & the best price I could get for a king was $1500.00. My mattress is 15 years old & needs to be relaceed but w/ a total knee & other big medical bills I just got the topper until I could get a new mattres. I got the recomendaction fron someone in my fibro support group. It really helped alot. I think with a new mattres it would be great.
DD Woodford - 05 Mar 2005 16:25 GMT I am thinking about this very same thing. So, I first tried the memory pillow, which I've had for just a week. The first night took some getting use too but after that I've left pretty well.
For years I've used the foam egg crate topper which has worked really well, but I've had my eye on the queen 3" memory foam for $130.00 from Overstock. It's time to replace the old egg crate since I've been waking up with RA pain, which is really an indicator that I need a new topper. Once I have a new topper I'm rarely bothered by pain at all.

RoseB - 05 Mar 2005 16:36 GMT In so far as mattresses go, I purchased the Sealy memory foam mattress set, with the wool cover which is t he top of their line. I got the firmest they had and it is really firm. Sometimes it seems suoer comfortable; at other times it does not. It depends on whether I am experiencing a flare or not. It is somewhat harder to turn on the memory foam since the mattress doesnt have the same give. I usually grab the headboard to turn (but I was doing that before also).
This mattress stays very close to your body since it takes on the contours of you. The special topper is made to deflect heat away; otherwise I can see that it would be very hot.
Is it everything it is cracked up to be? I can not answer that for sure. In some respects I wish I would have tried a select comfort as well as this since t hat gets good reviews.
I can not speak for how the topper would work though.
But if you are saving up to buy a memory foam, shop around.

Yeah, that's a real problem. Whether or not you like the memory foam topper/matress will largely depend on how mobile you are. A lot of the people on the Wheelchair Junkies board hated 'em because they're like quicksand. Once you lie down on it, you're stuck. For those of us who have arm/shoulder problems, that makes rolling over nearly impossible. I love my memory foam positioning blocks (they're sold as $10 "contour" pillows in the drugstore). They keep my kneecaps from drifting the wrong way when I sleep laying down (been a while with these $#!@! broken ribs). In fact, the real problem I had when I first got the memory foam blocks was that they were _too_ comfortable, and I didn't move enough when I was sleeping. ;}

JA - 11 Mar 2005 00:50 GMT Overstock.com delivered my 2" mattress topper in just a few days. Nobody warned me how heavy a queen-sized memory foam mattress topper can be!!! I dragged it upstairs and am airing it out as instructed. I'll post a review after I use it. Had lots of fun pressing hand prints after it expanded...is that a sign of early senility?

You know, I didn't even think to warn you of the weight of it. I can generally "spin" it without help (so long as I NEVER try to lift it off the bed), but occasionally I have to ask DH for assistance.

I need something >softer for my side of the bed and have been looking at the 2" memory foam mattress toppers--the 1" was a lot cheaper but it didn't seem like anything that thin >would do the job. One of my functions as ET and wound care nurse was helping the kids (a Paeds hospital) avoid pressure ulcers. To reduce pressure one needs 4-6 inches of foam. I chose a couple of mattresses that were different densities of foam for the kids who were in bed a lot. One of them had a form of arthritis and needed a comfortable bed, especially when she returned from physio.
My biggest fight was trying to get rid of 'egg crate' mattresses. They were a waste of money, could only be used by one patient then were thrown away. some parents wanted them for their kids for comfort but they are not recommended and for someone who is in danger of pressure ulcers not a good move at all.
I have no experience with memory foam but a 2 inch topper sounds better than nothing at all. --- Joan
Caroline Marold - 05 Mar 2005 18:45 GMT I sleep with a memory foam pillow. I am now on my third in seven years as they do break down over time so expect to have to spend the money again. Actually tried to make do for over 8 months this last time and wish I hadn't as my neck has been killing me. Replaced it just last week and ahhhhhhh. Oh, tried the Bed, Bath and Beyond instead of the Brookstone cause it was $20 cheaper and had to give that one away so just saying don't be too frugle on where you buy it. Duckie

It's got to be better than risking peeling eyelids again. Besides, they might have some cheap, cute bikinis for an upcoming trip to Mexico. Have any of you used the fancier, special pillows for the neck? I've been scrambling to get my neck to stabilize some. Right now, I just have one of the cheap contour pillows from WalMart because I often can't tolerate sleeping on it. I guess its my fibro, sometiems I can only get to sleep in my favorite position, kinda of my tummy, hugging my regular pillow.
Anyway, I found this neck pillow online that looks really nice. It also has a steep price tag and most places won't let you return it under any circumstances (health concerns). This is the one place I've found that will let you return it. http://www.pillowmart.com/ther.html I'd like to give it a try, but the price is rather steep for us right now and I'm not sure I could sleep with it enough to make it worthwhile.

Rebecca Ford - 07 Mar 2005 22:17 GMT Interesting site. I'd want to know what type of foam they use. I figure I can hang on another week until I hit Walmart for the contour pillow. I know that worked well for me in the past. I foolishly gave it a way when I got my tempurpedic since that worked so well. Figures my immune system eventually rejected it. Why can't my immune system reject fat, wrinkles and white hair instead of good things?!? At least I have chocolate!

I wonder if maybe the C curve of your neck is more pronounced than most for some reason. Mine troubles are the more common ones of the curve reversing or sometimes even resembling an S more tahn a C.

somehow, i also get the impression that everybody thinks the mattress breaks down in a year or two, but they are heat sensitive. so, if the house is warm, the mattress is mushy and if the house is cold, they are firm. my house is generally on the coldish side, cuz i like to wear layers. also, if your body is warmer than normal, the mattress is more conforming. i've had my bed 2 or 3 years now, and it is still firm when the house is cool and mushy when the house is warm.
but it is a b$#&h to put sheets on! soooo heavy! there are times i just can't convince myself i want that kind of back pain and it is just too overwhelming to try, so i toss another quilt over the sheets and sleep between the quilts and strip the sheets when i feel like it won't kill me. it's murder to change the bedding!

We keep our place cool in the winter, but we have no a/c so the summer temp depends on the weather. Summers are fairly mild here, but there just are some warm nights, even a few hot days! And down south, we keep the a/c set fairly warm, being of the environmetalist bent.
'S okay though. I still like our fairly new futon (old one had gotten too hard). When this one becomes uncomfortable, I'm hoping we can invest in a Comfortaire bed that should last the rest of our lives. :)
Oh and one pillows - when my neck was really bad last summer, I couldn't tolerate the contour pillow at all. I guess that just shows we have to use them however they work best for us!

I need something > softer [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > come > up with a soft top layer for my side. I bought a tempurpedic mattress a few years ago and like it. The bottom 5 inches is regular foam rubber and the top three inches is the "memory foam". I've been thinking of getting one of the thinner memory foam pads to add to it.
One important thing with them is the temperature of your bed(room). If it's cold, it will feel like lying on a moss covered rock! Then slowly as your body warms the foam it will soften and you will sink down into place. They really are great if your partner wakes you up by getting in and out of bed shaking the whole thing. This of course only applies to the full foam mattress on top of a solid base (no box spring either). My sister bought one recently and they did like on the TV comercial, setting a glass of water on one side and jumping on the other side. Nothing spilled.
Like someone else mentioned, they can be difficult to get out of! But eventually you will learn to roll out of bed, like you are supposed to anyway.
All in all, I think it would be impossible to get close to the full effect of the tempurpedic by putting an inch or two of memory foam on top of a standard box spring and mattress. It may help a lot? I don't know? But it certainly won't be the same as the full foam mattress on top of a solid platform.
BTW, I didn't like the modern look of the bases they sold, so I bought only the mattress, gave it the trial test period with it lying on the floor,(really difficult to get out of bed then!) then built my own base to put it on and attached the headboard that matches the rest of the bedroom set.

Cindy - 06 Mar 2005 14:37 GMT The folks on my Fibro support group loves them...And Wal Mart/ Sams do carry them...I had a waterbed until 2 weeks ago. and on top of it was a foam topper from simmons that I got from wal mart...I loved it...But the Scaredy Cat DOG (german shepherd) jumped in bed with us when a thunderstorm hit and sliced a huge hole in the waterbed...Had to replace the carpet and stuff...We put a queen size mattress in our waterbed frame. Then I put the simmons topper on it...Is not great...I wish I had the money for a Memory foam...But since we replaced the flooring right in the middle of the huge remodeling of the kitchen/diningroom/laundry room...I have to wait for more money.... I also know that some of the People on Clouds found a great deal online with free shipping...So I hope that you can find the answers you are looking for... Hugs Cindy
