I always get dry cracked bleeding lips in the winter

AND THEY HURT

Is there anything out there that can heal that split

Every thing I use--just gets soaked in eventually--but doesn't heal it
closed

Is it just that there is dry air (with low humidity) of the winter air??

I think it may not heal until there is more moisture in the air.

I love Carmex - the stuff in the little tub, not the stuff they put out in a
tube.  It's menthol, camphor and phenol in a base of lanolin, cocoa butter,
salicylic acid and wax.

Got a tub of Carmex somewhere too.  the balms help moisturize the
cracked lip--but not heal it---YET anyway

Gotta agree with Nann wholeheartedly here!   I love carmex, but it has
to be the kind in the little tub.   Whenever I have dry, cracked,
bleeding lips, I put the carmex on pretty heavily right before I go to
bed and usually within a day or so my lips aren't cracked and bleeding
anymore.  After that, I am diligent about putting it on every night at
bedtime and even sometimes during the day when out and about in the cold
dry air!

Donna G
Nann Bell - 03 Mar 2005 16:17 GMT
yeah, I use it constantly when my lips are bad.  Whenever it is absorbed or
worn off, I replace it.  And I always use it when going to bed as I breathe
through my mouth a lot overnight as my sinuses clog up.  I often replenish it
when I get up to pee during the night. (one tub carmex is on the top of the
chest by our bedroom door. - and a second tub lives in my purse)

Stock up on arthritis cream too--stock up on it--you never know--I even
got that cheap HOT ICE from Family Dollar--even though it'll knock ya
across the room, VERY STRONG SMELL 2.5%  menthol.......something.... is
better than nothing

Got LOADS of lip balms too--2 more 1/2 oz tubs of. Carmex

I love the "Burts Bees" lip balm.

If I don't have that, neosporin ointment works well too.

when I worked at the hospital, the nurses told me that the triple antibiotic
ointments actually tend to dry out the lips more, though I can't swear to it.
I guess that might be counteracted by them helping to heal really cracked
lips..... don't know.

Our climate isn't all that severe so usually it is a short term problem
here.

At the risk of being blasted as a salesman, I do have something that helps,
but since I sell it, I hestitate to offer it here. We have a lip balm that
works great.  I use it daily and no longer have the problem.

Just watched a medical segment on this on the local news.  A dermatologist
in Toronto recommends that a lip balm is fine for mild and occasional
chapped lips.  However, for those who have severe chapped lips and heavy
peeling for periods of longer than a week that you see your pcp or derm and
they can prescribe a preparation that has a very mild but effective steroid.
Once this has cleared the problem regular use of a balm is generally
sufficient to help.

You are not drinking enough fluid. Add some more liquid

I am having the same problem. My lips don't crack and bleed but they are
getting very dry and are peeling. I can't drink more liquids as my
liquids are limited to 6 glasses a day due to the fluid retention
problem I have with the congestive heart failure. I find if I drink more
liquids, the congestion starts up again. I asked the doctor about it and
he said no more than 6. I did buy carmex tonight at the drugstore when I
went in for my prescription so I'll give it a try. I'll put it on
tonight before I go to bed.

It's more than that, Duckie, at least here. Cold winds, perishing cold, my lips,
my hands, all winter long. I have a glass of water on the go almost all the
time, I go through skin lotion and hand cream like there is no tomorrow and I
use lip balm and Vaseline on my lips and still I am dry. I will improve once the
weather improves..

Caroline Marold - 04 Mar 2005 19:51 GMT
Yep the dry air is sucking the moisture right out of
you. All the cracking on my lips stopped when I stopped
using lipstick all the time so that I needed my lips
moist. Found I was licking them between applications.
That and added water solved my problem. Guess I was
lucky. Remember once when Jen was dehydrated after her
normal bout of flu, they had her on IV fluids at the ER
and her little cracked bloody lips plumped right up
before my eyes as she got more and more fluid in her.
Made me be sure to drink extra when mine were trying to
get chapped.

Bag Balm works well for dry skin (hands, arms, legs).

I used to use carmex until my RD told me that it's used to dry out cold
sores (not sure which ingredient), he said not to use "medicated" lip
balms for the same reason.  Me?  I'm a big Cherry Chapstick fan (it's
not thick like the regular stuff).

Can also make your own using almond oil and beeswax.

I use Blistex DCT (Daily Conditioning Treatment) that comes in a tub.

if i put it on just before going to bed.

I have to agree with everyone here.. Carmex... and make sure you are not
dehydrated. I have carmex laying all over the place and in my car, and in my
purse. Drink some water to make sure you are not getting dehydrated. I too
have dry cracked bleeding lips. I have a crack on my lips now that is like a
cut. The carmex is healing it up and it is starting to feel better. Dry heat
in our homes is the culprit. You might make sure you have a humidifier in
your home. If you do not boil a pot of water on the stove.

Bruce, I would be more than happy to send you some, but I prefer Burt's
Bees. Have you tried that? It's fantastic!

Send me an email with your address...I could look on my holiday card list,
but I'm lazy, and I'll be happy to pick up some lip gunk for you. Maybe I'll
send an assortment of things....hmmm, this could be fun.

it less expensive that other health stores and pharmacies.

Where you find Burt's Bees? Do you have to go to a health food store? I
didn't see it in any of the local drugstores.

Carole, Borders books carries it, as does Bath and Bodyworks and many
natural/organic food stores.

They sell online, at Long's Drugs, and at small boutique beauty supply
places around here.  Last I remember they were yellow boxes.  Honey Bee
color.  The web site will let you know what the packaging looks like and may
tell you who sells it in your area.  Their prices are crazy but well worth
it as long as you aren't trying to supply a teenager who loses every thing.
Or don't live with a teenager who "collects" everything that isn't nailed
down.

Their baby powder was the only thing we found that gave the grandbaby any
relief from diaper rash when he was teething.

Nope, no teens here, just me :)  I just took a look at their website and
it said that Bartell's has it. I did go to the local Walgreens and
asked for it, but maybe the woman I asked didn't know what it was. I
looked around but didn't see it. So maybe I'll try there again, and if
not, I'll go to Bartell's.

I was totally unfamiliar with Burt's Bees before this discussion - so , I
heard about it here, then I got my NPF newsletter yesterday and someone was
singing the praises of their products there.  And folks with psoriais tend to
know their moisturizers.  Right now I have a good supply of Carmex and Trader
Joe's moisturizing cream, but I'll keep my eyes open in the local stores for
some Burt's Bees to buy when my supplies get low.

I'll have to look next time I go there. I just went to Trader Jo's for
the first time last week. Parking there is always such a pain, but now I
have a thingee for my car so I can park in the disabled parking. They
had some cool stuff in there. Lots of organic and natural things that
are good for me since I now have to count sodium milligrams every day. I
LOVE things that say "Sodium...0mg" :-)) Now if someone could just make
me a pickle with no or little sodium, I'd love them forever :)

I got some yesterday too!  I was in QFC and they have a natural foods
section. Since I now have to eat things low in sodium, I was browsing
that section and came up a whole area of Burt's Bees stuff! They had lip
balm, lip gloss, body lotions, and all kinds of stuff :) I got the
raspberry lip gloss which is supposed to make my lips kissable. I'll let
you know if it works :-)))  They are much softer today, and the peeling
is going away. Now where are all those kisses?? ;-))))

I gave up on sodium/salt about 12 years ago.  Today
it's fresh or frozen veggies, homemade soups and as
many other goodies we can dream up.

I do have 2 exceptions to the no-salt rule - popcorn
and french fries.

We have become disguested with the amount of
sodium in canned goods these days.  It got to the
point that it was the only flavor discernible.  Campbell's
and Progresso seem to be among the worse.

... Underneath all these clothes, I'm completely naked.

My cardiologist said that canned foods are the worst. And you are so
right about Campbell's soups! YIKES!! My biggest problem is pickles, as
I LOVE pickles. But I got a no salt cookbook at the library and there is
a recipe in there for making pickles. Maybe one day we'll see "Carole's
Pickles" on the grocery shelf :))

I had to give up the sodium since one of the problems I have with my
heart disease is fluid buildup. So it makes no sense to take water pills
and use salt. I'm getting used to it though. And hey, all of this make
even make me learn how to cook :)))
