Hi!

Have been lurking, but have not felt energetic enough to post.

Had a small burst of energy which inspired me to make scalloped potatoes.
Was using a mandoline to slice the potatoes. Forgot to use the shield and
sliced off a small button's worth of the tip of my right ring finger. Owww!
Kept lots of pressure on it while Doug ran to CVS because we turned out to
be out of some bandaging stuff. So at least the bleeding was fairly low (for
this kind of cut).

No, didn't go to a ER/doctor. No skin left to stitch. Am up to date on my
Tetanus vaccination (plus it's a new mandoline). Nothing they could do that
we couldn't already do at home. If it doesn't look like the bandaging is
really protecting it, I'll go to my PCP office tomorrow and have them
re-bandage.

Thank God for the RD letting me keep a supply of Tylenol #3's in the house.
Took one right away. Am still somewhat freaked, but at least my hands aren't
shaking anymore. Major adrenaline overload. Boy do I feel wimpy, now. I
couldn't cope the rest of the evening. Doug had to take over kid care,
bedtimes, etc.

Oh no!
I hope that you can get some sleep tonight and that it does not get
infected and etc.

Yow, scary to even think about.

I will be thinking about you.

Owie, is right. I can almost feel it. It can be hard to do things with a
bandaged finger and when it hurts like that....... well, keep Doug working.

Ouch, that makes me hurt just thinking about it. Take care and let others
help you out this time.  I am sorry this happened to you.

Owwwwwieeeeeeee!!!   That sounds just awful!   Sure hope it heals up ok
and doesn't give you any further troubles.

Be careful with those mandolins, they are such a handy tool and yet so
dangerous!

Ouch Adelle..I know how bad that hurts and then the throbbing...OOWW....
Praying that it doesn't get infected and it heals quickly...Putting
Neosporin on it does help take some of the soreness out of a cut...

(((((Adelle)))))...yipes!

Keep an eye on that wound.....any heat, redness, swelling, burning,
throbbing...get thee to the doc. Neosporin might help once the cut is
a little more healed.

I don't know what a mandoline is, but I don't think I want one! That is
definitely an OWIE, in fact, I'd call it a double OWIE! Make sure you
put some antibiotic cream on it so you don't get an infection.

Here's a BIG HUG,

Youch!!  Hope that heals quickly.  Sounds incredibly painful.

BTW - how'd the potatoes turn out?

Yikes, Adelle! You know, it's those small bursts of energy you have to look
out for. They make us reckless in our haste to get something done before
they pass. I'm only half joking here.;o)

I hope you heal fast and that there are no complications.

I'm on Plaquenil. Does that need to be stopped?

I have continued my Plaquenil even when having surgery.  I have to
stop MTX whenever there is significant cut or trauma to the
skin....i.e....surgery, cuts, major bruising

That's how it was explained to me by my RD.

Call Dr. D if you are worried. He is very conservative
but I've never been on P so I don't know his opinion.

Owie is right!  Surely hope your bandaging works well and you don't get an
infection or have problems with it.  If it bothers you at all, get thee to
the dr.  You might need antibiotics.

Had a nurses visit and got a tetanus shot. The nurse said I should wash it
w/soap and water and re-bandage twice a day. That seems excessive. Don't you
wind up dislodging the clot and drying out skin you are trying to keep moist
so it heals from the inside out? Have been too chicken to change the
dressing by myself. The anticipation of how much it will hurt is rather
detracting. Doug said he'd help after Ian is in bed.

Called the RD who said I could keep taking the Plaquenil and Relafen. Now if
only I could get over this fragile feeling. I feel like such a wimp.

Yes, moist healing is the thing, however you do need to see it periodically to
make sure it is not infected. Do you have something moist or non-stick on it? I
won't attempt to tell you how to treat it without seeing it, but not dislodging
any clot is good practice.

I'm using the new non-stick Johnson & Johnson pads and a triple antibiotic
(with anesthetic)ointment to both keep it wet and cushioned. And I did
rebandage last night and this morning. It looks like ugly raw meat (which it
is. I guess). But it didn't bleed this morning after washing, which is good
(I suppose).

On the brighter side, Doug and I have gone back to showering together (after
a long hiatus) so he can do my hair for me. Now, if I only would stop feel
all shaken up, things would feel more normal.

that triple abx salve is a good one.

it's sweet to have your hair washed by your dh, isn't it?  almost worth the
owie, in my book.  are you still shakey, adelle?  sounds like something else
is going on, perhaps a reaction to something medicinal?

Nope. Just feeling shocky on top of mild anxiety disorder. That Flight/Fight
thing just kicked in and hung around for a bit. Now it only bothers me if I
have no other distraction or something I am concentrating on.

No more constant pain, just significant 'discomfort' when I accidentally
apply pressure there (like in putting on mittens to take son to schoolbus)
or clean it. Can't really use my dominant hand well. Guess it will be a
while.

Can you get one of those finger protectors for it, Adelle? I forget what they
are called. They cost about $14.00 (Cdn) but could protect the tip of your
finger. Check in the drugstore if you don't have one already.

Ah there you go. Glad you called. Did they tell you,
you could soak it in something? I had to soak my open
toe wounds when they cut out the toenails. Twice a day
with fresh bandages plus that nasty benedyne. I was to
use salt [not epsom but salt] 2TB per quart of water.
That is not enough water to coat my big toe so I was
using 4TB to what ever would cover my feet. Was using
one of those pink tubs you would have brought home from
the hospital. I managed to use up all the margarita
salt; a full tub of Morton's and half of another. But
the toes look good. :)
