update on the L5-S1 epidural

d'huit - 22 Feb 2005 06:05 GMT as you know, friday morning i had my first epidural injection of the series of 3. as i write this, i'm focusing strictly on how the epidural has affected me these past few days since. friday morning, after immediately returning home post first injection, i followed instructions and took it easy (for the first 24 hours).
still mildly rummy from the morning's valium cocktail, i lied down to rest about 11a.m. friday morning. my bed is pre-programmed for a recliner position, so i hit the button for what i generally consider most comfortable for my spine. not a good idea, at all. but i hadn't been informed that it wouldn't be. a comfortable 3-4 pain scale level instantly shot up past 7, up from my anesthetized L5-S1 spine to mid-thoracic area. yowies! i quickly fiddled with the control to find a new comfort zone. oddly, that turned out to be a totally flat position. i managed to nap for an hour before my upper spine decided it didn't like that position, silently rebelled, and i noticed that the anesthesia was beginning to wear off. so, i rose and took 2 ultracet, before the entire trunk of this human tree began to bend to the certainty of forthcoming pain, then waited (nearly 2 1/2 hours) for its peak effectiveness to settle things back down. and then, a two-hour nap followed.
upon awakening to a phone call, i rose and was astonnished to discover that i could walk with a minimum of discomfort. it was around 5 p.m. that i decided to get the mail. as i walked to the mailbox, something seemed strange, but somehow familiar. by the time my son came home from work, i had taken another 6 hour dose of ultracet and it had begun to hold my lumbar pain level down. he commented that something was different about me. then he pinned it down---he had never in his 28 years seen his mother walk more than a few steps without a sustained limp. and i haven't limped since that moment. i can't tell you how that feels, maybe because it feels like it should feel.<smile> how did it work so fast?
i've faithfully taken g & c for my knees for the past 7 or so years, just based on faith in the documentation i've read over the years about it. still i limped and just hoped that g & c was helping in some invisible way. apparently, it had, but i didn't have the opportunity to feel the benefit. it must have been my spine, all these years, and not my knees (despite the xrayed bone on bone in my left knee) nor my hips (though both knees and hips had almost always hurt) that had caused the limp. what a shock to discover that. so, my hips are less painful now, too. no spasms in my legs or feet at all, so far!!! neck and flank muscle spasms still occur, but they weren't treated.
friday night, i slept for two five-hour periods---yes, ten hours in a twelve hour period. i haven't slept more than 3 uninterupted by pain hours in a row for several years. saturday was a wonderful and long day. for this past year or so, ordinarily, i'd be wiped out of energy within a few hours, but i wasn't. our entire family was over my sister's for her birthday, then later my son and youngest sister and i went out for dinner. last night, i slept for another 5 hours in a row, but didn't have the patience to wait until a pain pill kicked in, so i arose and it's been a good day too. i'm still not limping---i keep wanting to repeat that over and over again, just to hear it in my mind, because it was such an unexpected blessing!
there are still low levels of pain in my lower spine, a tad higher levels when i sit or lie down, but walking feels soooo goooood, almost bouyantly energizing. funny, how that tends to make me feel younger. it's heavenly, to be able to stand in one place and not have to shift my weight constantly to avoid too much pain. i find myself thinking about bicycle riding again; doing it and not simply fantasizing, i mean.
i was called this morning by the pain managment clinic, to see how the epidural has progressed for me, or to find out if it had. have you ever wanted to kiss a phone? i wanted to. i feel like i've been given such a gift, a lovely miraculous gift. i asked how long this might last. it is apparently an individual thing and no doctor can say for certain if it will continue, continue to improve, nor if or when it might no longer work. i'll take the gift of being able to sleep 5 uninterupted hours and being able to walk, limpfree--for however long i'm gifted with it. i am soooo grateful for this result and soooo amazed.
so now, my very serious question is---how do i get a bathtub full of that stuff?<smile>

Nann Bell - 22 Feb 2005 14:45 GMT OMG, I am SOOOOOOO overjoyed to read this!!!!! You should see the huge smile on my face that started with your coments about the *walking* to the phone. I hope it just keeps getting better with the other shots. I know what you mean about sleep - I've had several times when treatment got me back to sleeping better and it is a wonderful gift. (long ago, 25 years or so, I worked with someone who only slept 4 hours/night. He swore that everyone could train themselves to get by on that little sleep so they could do other things instead of "wasting" time in bed. I've thought of him often over the years, especially wondering if he still thinks that way and knowing what an earful he'd get from me now!)
You know, I suspect the most and least comfortable position for you post-procedure is a highly individual thing. They might warn you that your most comfortable position might change, but I suspect they can't predict what will be. But the important thing is your wonderful improvement and increased, restful sleep and all those delights! How marvelous!

i believe there was a study done recently, indicating that sleep deprivation can actually shorten lifespans---but i keep wondering how on earth they can prove that. i mean, it's not exactly like we come into this world knowing what our "normal time card" would grant us for a lifespan. but i don't see how your friend's body could repair itself well or quickly, without having enough sleep.
now, at least, between the ultracet and the epi, i feel like i can really function again. it's hard living your life, as if you need a television commercial break, to move every 15-20 minutes, no matter whether you are sitting, standing, walking or lounging. sooo, this is definitely goodness.
went and got my driver's license renewed today and my parking plaquard renewed. it felt weird seeing "arthritic and neurological" added to the orthopedic issues for a reason---especially, since i haven't walked this well in decades. but, then, i think if somebody took away my pain meds and i had to rely on the epi solely, i wouldn't be walking very far :-0 it's the combo that's helped. i'm sure of it now. i can't wait until friday's shot, since the first one did this for me!<smile>

thank you for being happy for me and right along with me, kelly. first comes some kind of easy to remove bike rack on the back of pj. i have to research that. and then, comes replacing the desiccated tires on my practically brand new 20 year old 15 speed mountain bike.<smile> no safe place to ride around here (used to ride at the lake, but i would love to head up to rainier with it). orrrrr, if the costs are higher doing that, i'll just buy a lightweight foldup 7-speed that i can toss in the back and just saw at camping world.<smile> and if i can ride again, i sure will get alex to take a couple of pix.
kate
Nann Bell - 23 Feb 2005 14:35 GMT You should be able to replace the tires AND get the bike "tuned up" for $40 or so - depending on the market there. It'd be a good idea to do the tune up thing after the bike has sat for so long. They'll grease and oil everything again and check out the adjustment of the gears and brakes - you really want to make sure you can stop when you need to! LOL In your area, I imagine bike shops have periodic coupons or specials available for this. I know they always do down in Gainesville, a big bike city. You CAN do all of this yourself, but unless you have the right tools, it's a royal pain. I know my dad's hands finally got to the point that he'd just pay the bike shop a couple of bucks to replace his flats rather than do it himself.
As for racks, I'm lucky to have Mike to do that for me, heehee. Seems to me though that there are racks that can be permanently mounted to the back of vehicles such as your PJ. No doubt they cost more, but I bet it'd be much easier than taking one on and off. Or research the fold-up bike on the web - I just don't know how goood and durable they are.
All of this is making want late spring/summer to get here so we can ride again! Gotta get past not only winter, but the following mud season before I'll go out for a spin though!

We both love them and prefer them to the larger seats that are more the size of our ample seating areas. :)

actually, if this epidural result improves (so that sitting is good too) and is sustained for long enough, expect me and pj (the rav4---puddle jumper) near your doorstep one of these weekends (of course, i'll call and make sure it is convenient for you). i sooo want to meet you. i haven't been able to drive for more than a hour for too long. and no leg spasms is going to make that possible again, i think.
it would be fun to be able to once again cast "arrangements" to the wind, grab a sleeping bag and spontaneously point my wheels in some direction, or another, to wind up somewhere i've never been. cuz there's some exploring i've been wanting to do in this state and down 101 for a long time. ohhhhh, i'm soooo into this now, aren't i? and i even like that i am.<smile>
