Cane question

I'm thinking of getting one, partly for winter walking and partly for those
days when I just don't feel stable.  Right now it would be more of a
comfort/peace of mind thing and I wouldn't be leaning on it heavily.  Any
suggestion on where to find a nice one or how to get the right size would be
welcome.

Thank you!  :-)

Skip, I got mine at a medical supply store.  It is not fancy, though--just a
plain cane.

You should ideally be fitted for one by a physiotherapist or someone at a
drugstore with a Home Health Centre. When you stand straight with your arm down
by your side the top of the handle should fall on the inside of your wrist. Too
long or too short alters your gait.

There are all sorts of online sites where you can purchase canes that are
individualized. They need to be cut down when you get them so they are the
correct length.

That should have said the centre of the inside of your wrist. :-)

Hi Skip,
I am a big fan of http://www.canesgalore.com/. They have a great
selction and the people there are very nice and helpful.
I figure if I have to use a cane, it should  be a fun one so you
usually don't see me walking around with a plain old cane.

A big thank you to everyone for all the terrific replies.  I feel alot
better about this whole cane thing now.  The links....well I better hide my
plastic too 'cause there are far to many interesting canes I want.   I mean
"need"... that's it, "need"     ;-)

skip, LEKI makes great canes and walking sticks in a variety of handle
styles. they are pricey but the quality  and flexibility of use is worth
it to me. I had one stolen last year and was just able to replace it a
couple of months ago when i found their 'Walker' model on sale for half
price. im sure they have a url.

What I like best about mine is that it has an egonomically efficient
handle. It does mean a right handed or left handed cane, and it's more
generic than pretty, but my hands don't hurt when I use it. I bought it
at the medical supply store and they fitted the correct height for me.
It's adjustable. Came in black or silver or dark green.

WoW !  Went to House of Canes and found the same handle on fancier
canes!  They call it the "Palm Grip:  Cool!  I might have to splurge!

Wow another shopping url for when I'm manic.  I had given my plastic to
someone to hold but that is of no help when you have the number memorized.
At least it would be a useful expenditure as I've only got 5 now....lol

LOL  You know, Bruce, you can call the credit card companies and tell them
you need to have your account number changed.  <bg>

I know what you mean, though.  I've memorized the numbers for the 2 credit
cards I commonly use.  It really surprised my husband when he needed a credit
card to confirm a hotel reservation on the phone and I just rattled one off
for him.  heehee

All this talk got me looking at the URLs even though I don't need a cane and
doubt I could deal with one on my right side even if I needed it.  But I
discovered they both have some NICE staffs.... and I love to hike even when
it really hurts.  Saved both URLs. heehee.  Actually, one of them has the tip
I've been looking for for my present hiking staff, an untipped bargain that I
love.  Good, now I can slow down its wear and tear on the tip.  Thanks for
this thread, everyone!

When my niece was 4 years old, she totally knocked our socks off. My Mom
had bought her a toy phone and she was in the playroom playing with it.
All of a sudden we heard, "Yes, that's what I want to order and my
Mastercard number is" and she proceeded to recite my sister's credit
card number! My sister used to order a lot of things over the phone when
my niece was little, and she had memorized the entire number, including
expiration date! We made sure she never got a hold of the real phone :)

I bought a folding cane at Walgreens.  It's my favorite.  I can stick it in
my purse or on my lap when I am not using it.

I have canes all over the house...some cheap dollar store ones, some fancy
antique ones given to me by friends...the folding one is still my favorite
to use.

I have a beautiful one my uncle carved from maple while he was in chemo.  I
cannot use it, it is a bit short and I'd rather not risk damaging the detail
on it.  Other than good memories I think it's my favourite gift from him.

I bought a bronze colored offset cane (I think that's what it's called).  I
don't like using a cane so I covered mine in golden yellow wrapping paper
and then put smiley faces all over it and that seems to make it less
obnoxious to me.  Now it's so distinctive that people describe me by
it....the lady with the smiley face cane...for instance.

I have used one for the past 8 or 9 years for the same reason as
you -- comfort/peace of mind.  I tell people whom I meet that it's
my "security blanket."  <g>  I use in for our every-other-month
3-hour raid on the commissary (and in local stores too).  But
most of the time I can use the cart for support during those
"missions."  Basicly if I'm going further than a quarter mile
I take it along.

It was my dad's.  He died in1973, so you can see how long
we held onto it before putting it to use again.  Nothing fancy,
and he didn't lose 8 inches as I have, and its size is just
right.  Possibly wouldn't be if I used it day in and day out
during all of my waking hours.
