uhohhhh. now i'm officially a nervous wreck! i have images of butch's
agony during his prostate microwave procedure running through my head. i
just got called by the tech's assistant, assistant to the tech who will
assist dr. alex during my procedure. there will be no i.v. nor i.v. drugs.
the sedation consists of valium dissolved in tang taken orally---whoopie
ding. i'm not allowed any pain pills for 8 hours prior. they need me awake
and aware to tell them when the two-stage (fast acting and slow acting)
steroids bathe my nerve roots enough to relieve pain. not allowed to drift
off to sleep. it will be "mildly unpleasant" (where have i heard that
before?---just before butch's microwave procedure.) and "will just feel like
pressure, not pain" as the steroids fill the area (that's what they tell
women who are pregnant and we know all about that kind of pressure.) "the
slow acting steroid will last a week"?---i sure hope he really meant the
fast acting steroid will last a week. this does not sound like goodness to
me, at all. gees. it starting to sound barbaric to me, so far.
well, i guess when i get there and the main tech fills me in on the rest of
the procedure friday, i can refuse to sign consent and leave, if i'm not in
a good place about it. egads.

For what its worth. This sounds a lot like what they do when I get a
steroid shot to my knee. They numb the surface first. (I sure hope they
plan to do that?) Then when the needle goes into the knee joint I can feel
it but unless they hit something they shouldn't. In which case I cringe and
they back off. Otherwise, there is pressure and it is certainly unpleasant,
but not excruciating pain. Particularly if they are planning to do this
xray guided they should be able to avoid bad places.

Wow my RD never freezes/topically numbs my knees or knuckles. She has also
never missed or hurt me in any way, just a little pressure with lg amounts
of fluids.
Though she requires me to lay for ten minutes after the injection as once I
got up to quickly after she did both knees and I had a vaso vagel episode.
She's as big as a minute so was funny seeing her and her assistant trying to
get me back up on the table.

my RD uses a bit of topical anesthetic, then uses lidocane with the steroid
in the injection. In the case of my thumbs, the lidocaine helped more than
the steroid! It was so sad when it wore off.......

That sounds like what my PCP does. By the time I'm asking for a shot, I'd
go thru it just for the several hours the lidocane is good for.

((((((((((((((Kate))))))))))))))) I wanted you to know that I'll be
thinking of you and saying lots of prayers on Friday!! I know you'll
do just fine!!
Just a suggestion...when I'm really nervous about having something
done, I try to find anything I can to get my mind off of it. Go get a
couple of good movies tomorrow and watch them tomorrow evening. Play
an online game. Go to the bookstore or library tomorrow to look for a
new book. Call a friend and go get a bite to eat. Call a local spa
and see if you can get in to have a facial. Go shopping at a nice
store where they play soothing music and sell candles. Do anything
and everything you can think of to keep yourself real busy with things
that are relaxing.
The other thing that I always try to do is to stay up really late the
night before I'm having something done. Then when I do go to bed, I'm
so tired that I can sleep. I'm also much more relaxed when I'm tired.
I guess I must be just too exhausted to care or whatever, but it
always works for me.
Hang in there kiddo!! I think you're going to be so glad when this is
all over with and even happier that you had it done because it makes
you feel so much better!!!
Hugs,
Carol

Call the office TODAY! Everything you have told us about this office and
about the doc sounds like they are willing to address your questions and
concerns. Call and tell them you need to talk to someone higher up the
ladder for this procedure, perhaps even the radiologist. Over the phone or
in person. Get these concerns dealt with now so you won't have to fret about
it all night. Let them know how severe your pain is and how little you sleep
even with pain medication. I think you talked to someone low enough down the
ladder that you were given the party line, the standard procedure. It might
be possible to adapt things somewhat for your issues.
You won't know unless you ask the folks with the power and knowledge to make
these changes. And it won't do you any good to worry about it when you can
call them back. Heck, it'd really suck to go without pain meds all those
hours and then learn that you might have been able to take something! Call
them back today.

You can always simply walk away! I have done it before. If you are not in
the right place mentally...grab your purse and head for the door.

Kate,
I know this isn't exactly the same but the other day I got a shot in my
thumb joint.
He took a seperate needle and numbed it first then took the cotisone shot
and moved it around in the joint and I didn't feel anything but "pressure".
There wasn't much pain to it.
He said it might be painful when it the numbing wore off, but that never
happened and I have had relief since. I'm glad I had it done. It was
better than going straight to surgery first.
Is there anyway you can talk to someone that has had this done? Could they
get permission from someone for you to talk to? Just a thought. Hope you
find peace about this somehow.
