Apparently, there was a notice that this would no longer be free
(effective April 1)?  Has anyone heard that?  It's supposed to cost 10
Euros (approx $13 USD) a year?

Someone (Gino) on alt.gossip.celebrities has posted this today, and is
blaming AOHell for it (not being very good about follow up TOS
complaints, etc....).

>From Gino:
BTW you can blame AOL for this fee.  $13 a year will make abusers at
least think twice about posting shite.  Right now AOLERs have an IP
that makes it impossible for Individual.net to track
those signing up. Complaining to AOL is pointless.

Thanks for posting this and unfortunately it is true!   I copied the
notice below:

Effective from April 1th, 2005, use of News.Individual.NET will not be
free of charge anymore. The news service will continue as a fee-based
service. The fee for an account for News.Individual.NET is 10 EUR per
year (annual payment), that converts to only 0.84 EUR per month.

Effective immediately, registration for our news service is only
possible through our web site (Registration). Registration by e-mail
(as hitherto) is no longer possible.

Holders of existing accounts who want to continue using their account
need to convert it into a pay account. This is also only possible
through our web site (Registration). You will also find all details on
payment options, terms of use, and terms of contract on the web site.

For more information (especially on transitional periods and
background), please also check our public announcement.

Crappy news but it is still much cheaper than other services.  I
checked the web and, indeed, it is about $13 per year.  -- MZ

Well, it's really only about $1 a month and it's worth it since they
remove the SPAM before you read the messages.

I registered and looked at my cost it was $13.55 for a year
subscription.   I like the spam filtering.

You have to sign up for this click and buy thing.  At first it looked
like 10,000 euro but it turned out to be ok they charged me $13.55.
Geez all the good bargains on the Internet are gone. ;-(

Oh, it was that European thing of using commas for decimal points!

Mary, I signed up cause I like it so much but had to
register as a new user cause I couldn't remember the
email address I first registered with -- it has long
ago been bought by first one company and then another.
My guess is that I am going to have to reset my stuff
so I can post by April 1. Is that your guess as well?
And do I have to use the password they gave me -- no
way I will remember that one.

Duckie, you'd better make a note of it.  Before they cut me off, they had
before that asked for my password.

printed it out. Guess I am going to have to dredge up
the memory and set the thing up. When I signed up, it
was with an email that has long since died buy out deaths..

Yes I am still using my old account but it sounds like that will end
in April.   Luckily I used my Hotmail account to sign up and kept the
e-mail in a registration folder.  I've had my hotmail account for
years, old friends have been able to contact me via hotmail.  I copied
the sign up page e-mail and password  and stored on my computer.  I
also have roboform on my computer it stores all my passwords credit
card, bank information.   I put in there as well.  Roboform works
better than windows or the Google tool bar and I can keep safe notes
about sites (e-mail info etc). -- MZ

Of course, now that you've advertised the fact you keep
stuff like this on your HDD, its only a matter of time
before it gets scanned/cracked/whatever.

Sad/annoying/predictable but all too true I'm afraid.

Now watch someone post up about how they've "never had a
problem" with M$ "security". ;\

There are many who drive without a seatbelt too, and, given
the inverted logic that only those who survive can testify
to the safety of this practice...

If you trust your privacy to a computer, especially one
running software that TO DATE has never been proven to be
securable, but oh so often proven otherwise, then its only a
matter of time before the obvious happens.

DO remember that you do these things at your own risk, and
that risk is already well documented to be a reality.

P.S. Can't beat a notepad and pencil y'know! ;)

IF you have a current account and IF you have your user ID and password
they continue to be valid; you need them to move your account into the
"pay for" column.  I just did that a couple days ago; no changes at all
on my end, only with my credit card.  And registering early set the
clock to run a full year from April 1, meaning the time between now and
then is still free.

The biggest hassle, not a big one, was setting up for the company that
collects payments for them.  I was robotically directed to the company's
German site, filled out forms, and then was told that in the US payment
is through their US subsidiary and was led through most of the same
dialog again.  I don't know how Canada fares in this.

I got the email but decided that since Comcast did us a favor by adding
another gig to our Giganews that comes with our service, I figure I'll
just stick with Giganews. I was using the German server as a backup in
case I went over the limit with Giganews.

BTW I love the April 1th (oneth).

Here's a free news server (that has a one time setup fee of $3.95) that
someone posted in another newsgroup:  http://www.teranews.com/
