Tired old me

Caroline Marold - 14 Feb 2005 03:48 GMT
Okay -- I am calling my doctor on Monday as this is
just not right. But I am soooo tired. I wake up tired.
I fall asleep sitting up.  I am dragging around.
I have felt like this before back in my period days
when I had been bleeding to much but that is not
happening so don't think it is anemia. I am not sure if
it is my heart, my blood sugar levels, the lower amount
of prednisone, my lungs ....  I don't hurt. Guess that
is the good news.
Might be me packing stuff which feels like it is all by
myself. John is pretty much not helping. Acting like a
spoiled child most of the time with his lower lip stuck
out. But somehow I don't think the packing is causing
the problem.
Is it the anesthesia still in my body after all these
months? Anyone want to take a guess. Too tired here to
get mad and get grumpy over it all.
Sure hope the doctor will be there tomorrow. Don't like
the PA in the Internal medicine department. She has
misdiagnosed me twice and has a gee you are boring me
attitude.

Sounds like either anemia or blood sugar is too high to me. Please do call
and get some tests done. We don't need any more problems around here right
now.

hummm blood sugar too high. Anything a person can do to
fix that when they already eat a well balanced diet.
When it is too low, I know a bit of juice helps.

Exercise can lower blood sugar, if you can manage that. Barring that,
eat a less well-balanced diet (less carbs). Weren't you in the South
Beach crew last year?

Still eating south beach. It is no longer a diet but a
way of life.
BTW, I told the doctor that I was hungry and had not
taken my morning meds because I eat before I do and I
was not sure if they wanted fasting time lines on anything.
2 hours later a 'meal' arrives. Plate full of mash
potatoes with a side of carrots. Angel food cake;
ginger-ale the regular kind; orange sherbet; a teeny
tiny salad [all lettuce save the one tiny cherry
tomato] with a huge slice of cucumber with was probably
one eighth the cuke with diet italian dressing on the
side; and a tiny bowl of chicken broth which had a
piece of celery and two noodles and was labeled chicken
noodle soup.  Doctor asked me later how was lunch and I
said a carbohydrate dream come true. I ate the lettuce
and tomato and broth. Wonder why the nutritionist
bothered with the diet dressing when nothing else on
the tray would have qualified.

Just a thought...ask your doctor to check your B12 level.  A few months
ago mine was 151 and after Vitamin B shots and daily suppements is now
up to 535 and I am staying awake all day.  My PCP did not pay attention
to my complaints but the neurologist who diagnosed my neuropathy sure
did listen and ordered the tests.

It seems a little late in the day for a post anesthesia droop, but you never
know.  And I know you had planned on being "all better" by now so I'd guess
there is some let down from that.  And its February for God's sakes.  I
thought we were supposed to drag around in February.  Blood sugar should be
OK, since you have been staying close on South Beach.  Anemia can come from
lots of causes.  The stress on your body from healing would do it.

Don't know where you are on prednisone vs where you were, but I can always
pretty much count on having to pay back any extra energy it gave be when I
give it up.

Please feel better soon.  Find some sparkly music to dance to.  Skip the
dramatic stuff.  Spring is here in California.  Daffodils are blooming.
Orchards are in full bloom and carpeted with yellow mustard flowers.  And my
cousin from the Boston area who has been visiting so doesn't want to go
home.

I think visiting Jo would make all of us feel better :)
Caroline,  I have FM so I am use to being tired...Usually when I am going
through the exhausted stages, where I can't hardly get up and go at all...I
am not in as much pain...It is weird ...but when I am flaring and hurting
really bad they give me a feel good shot...It is B12, cortisone and some
kind of hormone...The Rheumy said it was created by an old and now retired
Rhuemy that worked there...
It does seem to help...
Praying that you feel better soon..

Where in CA are you. All the packing and tossing I have
been working on is for a move to that state. And your
cousin is right, this is no place to live especially
with arthritis.
I am on the lowest dose of pred [4 mg] that I have been
in say 8 years. Highest I have ever been was 80mg but
will never do that again. That was about 3 years ago. I
have never been off it all together. But doctor said
things that would indicate a problem there were
perfectly normal.

I'm forty miles north of Sacramento in Yuba City.  We are a little drier and
warmer than the Napa Valley.  I'm guessing you will be in the Bay Area and
the climate there can differ a lot in just a few miles.

Just wondered if you called your doc.  I've been feeling the same way,
although I've had spells of this in the past too.  It seems to run
with RA flares with me.  I'm just so exhausted that all I can do is
lie around or I feel like my body is in major overload.  I took my 3rd
Enbrel injection yesterday since being off of it for 6 weeks.  Today I
do feel better....not in as much pain and have some more energy.

Let us know what the doctor says.  And I hope you feel better soon!

Turns out I am healthy. rofl   Spent the day in the ER
cause my doctor wanted me there. They checked my heart
and took gobs of blood. All were fine which actually is
good news. Meds all ok; no sign of infection; blood
sugar fine; nothing presenting in the blood to show
signs of adrenal insufficiency; nada.
I guess I am lucky because during this week and once
last week, ER doctor said he has had several present to
the ER with absolutely no other symptoms except raving
tiredness. If I had been first through the door I
suppose he might have thought I was nuts. But having
others before me was a good thing. Said they their best
guess is that it is a virus that will just have to run
it's course. I asked about my Arava and after I
explained what it was [told him to think MTX] he
suggested I leave it off until I felt better.
So I was sent home with a note that says 'follow up
with doctor' meaning my regular PCP.
Now that I sleep off and on all day in the ER you would
think I wouldn't be tired OR sleepy but you would be
wrong. Going for a nap.

Naps are almost a requirement after an ER visit.  With all the poking,
prodding and endless recitation of symptoms and history your tired.  Then
there's the rests the waiting the coming and going of people and more than
enuf noise to give you a headache....after hours or a day or two a good rest
is well deserved.

Since you ruled out most things, just in case make sure you aren't a little
dehydrated.  (Water is just on my mind as its my day after MTX and I feel
terrible without it but still have to force myself to drink it)

I'm constantly forgetting and then reminding myself that tired often means
thirsty.

That is also a possibility. Usually have something
around to drink but Paku was being his usual annoying
cute self and had stuck his paw in my beverage. I was
so tired I had not got up to get something else and
that could not have helped. I have to leave the caps on
sport water bottles because he licks the tops. And we
all know where his tongue has been.
Actually I can into my office to grab a bottle just
before I left for the hospital and there he was with
his teeth on the cap trying to dislodge the cap. You
should have seen his little face. Thought I had left he
did.
They are both sleeping now and like all good children,
sometimes they are perfect when they sleep.

I usually remember to drink water, but I forget that meds and climate and
furnaces and air-conditioning can affect how much I need.  I usually drink
out of a bottle with a solid cap, or if I use a cup I rinse it and fill it a
drink it right there.

Charlie prefers to drink from a glass with ice cubes in it.  Jake likes to
lick ice cubes.  (He only knocks over the glass sometimes.)

To give you an idea of my cats idea of charm, this is a story I just posted
on the cat group.

Jake and the Roof.
I've mentioned our problems with Jake and the Roof before.  He used to use
the plum tree to get on and off the roof, and started getting stuck up there
after we pruned the tree.

I've come to realize he is doing it on purpose.  He only gets "stuck" on the
roof after dark when its time to come inside.  I used to think he was fairly
smart, but have about decided he is just very single minded.  It can be cold
or raining or both and he will still go up there when its time to come
inside.  Each and every time Charlie or one of the boys has to climb up the
ladder and he will come to the edge and allow himself to be rescued.

I considered the suggestion to cut the tree back further but saw that there
is a neighbor's tree he uses to get up there as well, and also a part of the
fence he can use.

He's up there every night.  And I have to come up with a solution before
summer.  Cold and rain in our Northern California won't kill him.  But a few
hours up there in the summer well could.

So I've been spending my spare time working on ideas for a light weight
easily stored inexpensive cat ladder or ramp.

Last night I went out to call him inside.  He was walking across the
driveway and just gave me an ornery look and ducked into the neighbor's
yard.  Its cool out and drizzling rain.  An hour later, there he is, wet and
cold and back up on the roof.  Ready finally to come inside.

one teaspoon of canned catfood should get him to keep coming in when called.

just open a can of catfood, indoors when he's inside, make a big production
of spoon on the outside and inside the can noises-- then, give him just a
taste, not a lot, like half a teaspoon.  do this a few days in a row, so he
recognizes the sounds.

when you want him to come down and inside  from the roof, go outside with
the can of catfood and tap it  with a spoon, like you're going to serve him
his treat.  then give him just one teaspoonful (not heaping) when he comes
for it.  you should be able to get him to come to you from anywhere he is,
once he associates the can and spoon noises with his favorite foooooood.  my
3 are totally trained to can and spoon sounds now, since my last episode of
jeepers doing a houdini by escaping into the great outdoors.

Oh I wish.  Neither of our cats would be caught dead eating canned cat food.
And if they don't find enough dry food at home they can get all they want at
any of five or six neighbors houses.  I wouldn't say the little darlings are
spoiled, but most evening Jake gets a jumbo cooked cocktail shrimp thawed
and minced by Charlie.  Molly doesn't care for shrimp so she gets about a
tablespoon of freshly thawed and minced raw ahi tuna.

Charlie is also the one patiently getting him off the roof every night.  I'd
be inclined to just leave him up there long enough to at least get hungry.
I'm betting he could get down on his own if he really wanted to.  But then
again he has stayed up there in the rain and got soaked.

With the climate we have, most times if I were a cat I wouldn't want to come
inside either.

Duckie - I had a more than a little tired spell for about a week or so
recently and figured out that I was on too much pain med. I had
increased my dosage (patch) when I had the spine fractures and I just
didn't need that much anymore. In fact, I reduced several of my meds
which had been increased at that same time back to pre-fracture levels.
Helped immensely with the fatigue.  Just a thought....Hope you feel
better soon.  Also, what about your thyroid?  Sometimes surgery can
mess that up big time.

Thyroid in the perfect range. And I have weaned myself
off all pain meds save my one NSAID. The neurontin
which was increase just after the surgery is back to
the one a day. Not even taking Benedryl to sleep.
Actually not really hurting much -- well I would say
arthritis is in a 3 range which for all of us really is
great!!  lol
Managed to get both cats to the vet for their shots

wiped me out on a good day.

Yeah good to hear everything seemed to check out ok!  Sometimes I get
periods of fatigue but usually it happens because I am anemic. Take a
break for a few days before you start packing again.

When are you making the big move?  I think you will like the CA

John is for the move except he has to leave the north
east and that fact has finally hit him. So he is being
childish about it. He is going to get over it. hehehe
I moved up here 34 years ago from the south. It is now
his turn that I be warm for a change. Leaving my
earmuffs behind will be great.
Actually he is getting there. Told him today that I had
sorted through most of my stuff that I can reach and is
not in an attic I have yet to see. There are things we
[house cleaner and I] can look at but it requires his
input now so he has to be on bat. So he agreed. Yipee!!!
The poor boy hates change. This is a huge change. That
is his problem. And he hates to toss anything. That is
also a problem.
This too shall pass.
Keep holding my hand -- I think I am going to live

Men generally hate change. I think it's in their DNA :)  I certainly
don't miss the NY winters, that's for sure! As my friend David says "it
may rain out here in the winter, but you don't have to shovel rain!" Nor
do I have to get up an hour earlier to chisel the frost off the

I know exactly how far I'd get if I wanted to move from where we are.  I've
been lucky.  I've only lived two places my whole life for any length of
time.  The only big moves were from Washington DC to Alaska and from Alaska
to this house.  And I wasn't even there for either move as far as packing up
and shipping and unpacking, etc.

Charlie on the other hand spent twenty years in the Air Force and if you
look at his papers I think he averaged a move every six months during that
time.  He fully intends to die in this house and I can't really blame him.

I think there are still two boxes in the rafters that haven't been opened
since we got here from Alaska 34 years ago.  Probably winter camping gear.
Charlie is so bad he about comes unglued if we even make any
changes/improvements.  Sometimes he's like a grizzly bear defending his den.

heh, we told our folks that they needed to sort through some of their stuff
BEFORE they died!  Fortunately, Mother agreed with us after sorting through
her mom's stuff after she died.  She's thinned out the 48 years' collection
somewhat.  I must admit some of that old stuff was much better made - she has
some pans that are as old as I am that are in better shape than ones I bought
7 years ago.  We may have some battles over who inherits those pans!  I guess
she'll have to live forever to keep peace among the kids.  :)

LOL  I've had real troubles with Mike over sorting through things on and off.
He was so unwilling to get rid of things back in Florida but was forced into
it - somewhat - by our move into 500 sq ft.  Now I'm *trying* to avoid having
it all build back up again!  LOL  We usually keep a few favorite Xmas cards
from each year's crop.  After I went through them, I made the mistake of
asking Mike if he wanted to flip through them quickly to see if he wanted any
of them.  The cards have been sitting on his desk for at least a month
now.........

Glad to hear your incredible fatigue appears to be a virus that shall pass.
I've had ones like that a few times, no symptoms but fatigue.  Mike usually
gets it around the same time though so we realize it must be a bug of some
sort.

How is the tired Duckie doing these days. ;-) Is she quacking up. LOL ;-)

I hope you are soon done with the packing and all and can rest up so you
will be a happy quacker. ;-)

I am still holding your hand, can you feel it. I hope so. I know you will
live through this process to do it again. running and hiding now. ;-)

Can we come visit after you get moved in. I want to see Duckie and see if
Duckies and Squirrely's get along together. I will leave your tail feathers
alone if you leave my bushy tail alone. But watch out for Denise, she really
checks out to see if she can see our tails. ;-)

I know Denise, another slap but maybe you will miss this one too. ;-)

Cindy, yes,  I think visiting Jo would be good for all. So we can all head
up there to see her and have a big party. ;-)

Still tired but not as much. But this week I had
painters here three days in a row; then Thursday I had
the organizer here from 9:30-4:30 while she worked with
both John and I; and the Chimney repairman came on
Thursday as well. It was quiet today.
I still have not found Jennifer's christening gown. I
found the slip but not the gown which makes no sense to
me. Shelves are emptying and drawers are emptying.
I have to take tons of stuff to the shredder -- hope
the new van will hold it all.
And we are looking at even more snow for next week.
They mentioned casually that if it does snow again and
kids lose time to it -- spring vacation might be
canceled. Glad I am beyond kids at home age.
I think Ducks play well with Squirrels. Not sure how
Paku will do as he has been as bad as it gets with all
these workmen. Got home on Wednesday and asked if he
had behaved and the painters burst out laughing. Seems
he had not. Found three spots on his left side and his
entire right flank was white. stupid cat.

Duckie,

It sure sounds like you are busy little beaver aren't you?

Sounds like you are keeping everyone busy and in line. That is good.

I hope the snow lets up for you.

Paku is just trying to make sure everyone does his or her job right. ;-)

Hope everything goes well for you.
