Don't know if I was missed but I sure missed you guys.  My phone was
out for a few days, then my computer crashed, then I got it up and
running but it was talking to my modem.  Then I got it to recognize the
modem but it wasn't talking to AOL.  Somewhere in the midst of all that
I got my tubes put in my ears.  I also fell and broke my ankle.  Don't
panic, it was just a hairline fracture and I walked on it for 3 weeks
before I found out it was broke.  Me thinks my pain tolerance is a wee
bit too high.  Anyway,  ears are fine,  ankle is mending, bla, bla,
bla.

So, I hate AOL. I can't believe they got rid of the newsgroups.  Time
to start shopping for a new ISP.  Does anyone know of a good,
trustworthy ISP?

Talk to you all later.  I have to start getting caught up.

them, but doesn't sound too good!
Glad you're back and things are mending.....you take care......(((((HUGS))))

Geez, and I juust thought you were working too hard again  :)

Check with your phone and cable companies and see if either is offering good
deals on a high speed connection.  Lots of them are these days and you might
as well get the good stuff.

Are your ears improving with the tubes?

Well, what about the "german server"?  You'd still be on AOL, but hey.
There is also beta Google, but that can be cumbersome (I use it, but
I've got broadband).  There is a newsreader called Agent, lots of
people like that one.  Some people on Earthlink say they are pretty
reliable, but I don't know about newsgroups.  I think I've got links to
both the server and Agent if you'd like them.

So sorry about the ankle.  I believe high pain tolerance is just an
"advantage" to having arthritis (of any form).  Fortunately, I've not
broken anything, but most of my family has, so much empathy from me for
that.

How are the tubes working?  I'm sitting on the fence (and dang is it
uncomfortable) about possibly getting some, but on the rare occasion I
swim, I worry about that.

I'd love to have those links.  Reading through google is slow.  The
tubes are working fine but they do have drawbacks.  I have to wear
plugs when I shower or swim so I don't get water in my ears.  Also,
when your ears pop, it's really strange, like you hear it from both
sides of the ear drum.  At night when it's quiet I hear my pulse in my
ears.  Most nights it doesn't bother me but last night it sounded so
loud.  It drove me up the wall and I didn't get much sleep.  Finally
figured out that if I hummed I couldn't hear it, so I hummed myself to
sleep.

Okay,  Agent:

http://www.forteinc.com/main/homepage.php

Don't worry about the price thing, if you don't wish to pay for it, it
will go to "Free Agent" after 30 days.

The "german" server, I believe is at:

http://news.cis.dfn.de/namechange-en.html

If'n that isn't the right one, I am pretty sure that Rosie knows the
link.  The guy who gave me this one said:

I haven't followed the links on
the page, but I'm assuming they should lead to a location to set up
service on Outlook Express, Agent, or whatever news reader you might
have.

Hope it helps.
Rosemarie Shiver - 12 Feb 2005 21:55 GMT
The German server addy is:

http://news.individual.net/

It takes a few days to get an e-mail back with yer password but the
service is very reliable. And the nicest thing is all the spam you'll never
see posted unless it is replied to.

Welcome back, Sarah!

Hugs from Rosie

That is what I use and I read through Netscape because
it is so much easier to use than Outlook.

Sarah, I can't believe that on top of everything else, you broke your ankle.
Good grief lady, didn't you already have enough wrong?  Surely hope your
computer keeps working right, your ears won't give you any more problems,
and the ankle heals quickly.  Are you in any type of cast or brace?

Oh my!
I agree with the pain tolerance thing. Smetimes that does not work to
our advantage.

Another thing with the pain tolerance, they  call it a high pain threshold
for a reason.  For most it means that they can tolerate more pain than the
average person - up to a point.  But when they cross that point it is like
flipping a switch.  It all comes roaring down just like it would for anyone
else.

Don't know about others but minor pain doesn't seem to bother me much.  But
I don't go from "I'm OK with this"  to "Maybe I'm OK with this" To "Heck
this hurts" to agony.  I seem to skip one of the middle steps.

And another point is that there is technically a difference between pain
tolerance and pain threshold.  Tolerance is how much pain you can live with,
you know you hurt but you deal with it and keep going because "it's not that
bad" even though it might floor someone unaccustomed to being in pain.
That's why so many of us consider a pain level of a 3 to be an absolute
delight after living for so long at much higher pain levels.

Pain threshold is how much damage your body needs before you actually realize
that you have pain, that something is wrong.  A person with a high threshold
might actually have no sensation of pain from a broken bone because for some
reason the CNS messages aren't being interpreted that way, or aren't being
sent or aren't getting through or any of those things.  A person with a high
threshold might think pain that we would categorize as a 3 to be totally
unbearable while we'd consider it it delight to be at that level.  But, for a
person with a high threshold, a pain level of 3 means a lot more is wrong in
their body than with someone who'd pain threshold is lower.

My dad had a really high threshold.  Depite joints obviously ravaged by RA,
he almost never experienced "pain" from the disease, just stiffness and an
inability to use his joints.  He'd feel some pain when weight-bearing joints
were bone on bone, but not really until then.  They also couldn't believe how
little pain medication he'd require after surgery.  He wasn't being "tough",
he just really didn't need any more to kill the pain.  It's a 2 edged sword
though - he might have sought more effective treatment earlier for some stuff
if he'd experienced pain at the levels I have with his arthritis.

Welcome home Sarah. Just had to replace the hard drive
on my laptop -- thank heavens for extended warranties.
We have been telling you guys for years to leave AOL in
the dust. lol  Maybe someone will send you the google
email link. And then there is the german newsgroup.

whaddya mean "don't know if i was missed . . ."?  holy cow, woman, of course
you were missed!    but, sarah, do you think you could ease up a bit on the
owie stuff---like don't fall and break any more bones and stuff like that?
it is waaaay past time you had some good stuff happening to you.  shall i
insist?<smile>  teasing aside, it is soooo good to see you back, hon.
bummer about the ankle.  glad you got the ear tubes.  ummm . . . i prolly
shouldn't tell you this, but in a pinch, i used silly putty instead of ear
molds/plugs and it seemed to work better.  yes, well, i was a mom and moms
don't exactly always have time to do things in the most copasetic ways.  but
it was new silly putty, not play-dough, and was not reused.<giggling>

i don't own stock, but i wish i bought some years ago.  i'm still with
comcast broadband and it seems to work ok for me, even using OE6.  there's
an occassional and fairly rare isp glitch, but i think that's true with
most, if not all, servers.  it's definitely not the least expensive way to
go though.

so, now tell me, have you found a way to make work a little less stressful?
and how's the birdhouse coming?  and did you ever blow bubbles?  i'm still
picturing you blowing bubbles at work and hoping you dared to!LOL

hey sweetie, welcome home!

You were missed. I always miss you when you are not around here. We need you
here more.

I am glad you got the tubes in your ears. Are they helping you or can you
tell a difference yet.

Sorry about your ankle. I hope it is healing quickly. Does this lay you up
much or can you still work with it.

Thinking of you alot.
