Another @$$*&^ DVT

RoseB - 12 Feb 2005 01:50 GMT I could hardly sleep last night with leg pain, right in the area I had the DVT last January. (also a headache) I went to the doc after school and my right calf was 5 cm larger than the left. I have to go for the doppler on Monday, but the doc is pretty sure it is another DVT, as am I., There is a distinctive feeling, and the pain is pretty bad, I have started on the fraxiparine and coumadin.
Not happy. :(

Sounds like you may be on coumadin from here on out. At least it will likely make the pain go away pretty quickly. Rest and take it easy. Hope it is only a tiny one and that it dissolves quietly where it is ASAP.

Gwen Love - 12 Feb 2005 22:36 GMT Rose, that report doesn't make me happy either. Really hope it can be stopped very quickly if it is another DVT. Gwen

Caroline Marold - 14 Feb 2005 22:58 GMT My mother is on that now permanently due to a heart which is beating too fast and no way to slow it down [they tried - twice]. Certain foods she has to watch and no vitamin K in her vitamins. But a livable situation. Duckie

(also a headache) I went to the doc after school >and my right calf was 5 cm larger than the left. So I went for teh doppler, and the technician says that he can not see any sign of a dvt, but what he can see a lot of is fluid all throughout my leg. He asked me if it was really painful and burning, to which I said yes. So he said it appears to be synovial fluid coming from your knee. Well I have not had knee pain, but in the past have not had ankle pain before this thing started the other way (when I get the evil foot thing). I have had both knees replaced many years ago.
On Saturday this currrent problem visibly changed so that it seemed less like a dvt and more like the evil foot thing but instead this covered my whole leg. I had a temp of 38.2 most of the weekend and had that really crummy feeling I get. I wondered if I had a dvt and the evil foot thing.
So it will be back on the pred for me, and I am going to take some time off. It would be difficult to work this way anyway.
If I am having such an over production of synoviall fluid and it is somehow making its way either up or down my leg, then my RA must not be very well controlled at all. Perhaps if the Rd can see this report, he will have a greater understanding of what is going on, as I have this (in the foot and spreading up) regularly. This is one of the first times it has gone the other way. I am glad it is not a DVT, but also hopeful that this will be a breakthrough to figuring out the whole thing. And you are right, maybe this will help them get things right.
When my right leg first acted up, it began to swell from the foot up. It all hurt, not specifically the knee, just everything from the knee on down. The only reason I suspected it was all really the knee was the problems I'd had with the left knee. I talked the doc into draining and injecting the knee and he was shocked at the amount of fluid that came out of it. The whole lower leg improved greatly with the steroid shot. And the shots that followed every so many months. Now MTX seems to be keeping my knees under control. But the right leg stays slightly swollen from the knee down. Drives the nurses crazy when I'm in the hospital and they have to check my feet for swelling. Cause swelling in the right one doesn't count.

Caroline Marold - 14 Feb 2005 23:16 GMT Amen to figuring the whole thing out. And glad there is no DVT at least none he saw. Duckie

how's your new furbaby doing with his new mommie? has he claimed his new home yet? what have you named him?

Thanks, Kate. My family doc was not impressed with what the tech said. He continues to believe that this is vasculitis. But why the fluid? It is a mystery still. The pred certainly helps, but at what cost? I have been on high dose pred so many times in the past few years. It may be better to just stay on low dose and see if that prevents the whole thing. Too bad the rheumy is so far away. I do have an appointment next month, though.
>how's your new furbaby doing with his new mommie? has he claimed his new >home yet? what have you named him? I am actually calling him Quigly. He is an adorable cat. I have taken pics both with my new digital camera and my old one. I just have not done anything with them yet. Everyone that has seen him loves him. His breed does not climb, but this little fellow is a jumper, who right now is looking down on me from the top of the kitchen cabinets.
Susan, the lady who gave him to me, took him to see his previous owner in the nursing home last week. The man was barely conscious, but there was a glimmer of recognition when the man saw Quigley, and the kitten slept on the man's tummy for a bit. She then took him to visit the other seniors. He came home loooking a bit ruffled from being petted the wrong way, but none the worse for all the attention. It was perfect timing, because his preveious owner passed away on the weekend.
So today is my follow-up appointment with the Orthpod. Will keep you posted.
Thanks for asking.

d'huit - 16 Feb 2005 16:52 GMT well, poop! i was hoping the new info would trigger a different response from your doctor. here's hoping your orthopod or rd will acquire a new insight from the doppler report info.
i love the name quigley, rose. waaay cute. adorable name for your adorable little ragdoll. jumpers are fun and funny to watch. can't wait to see a picture of him. it was very touching to read how quigley napped on his previous owner's tummy. a very sweet good-bye.

I am going to see the Orth about my hip, so I don't know how much opportunity there will be to discuss this. My swelling has gone down a lot from the pred, so I don't know how noticeable the whole thing will be. If the opportunity presents, I will ask him for an opinion as well.

I wanted something different. He does not come to that mane yet, but in time he may. I think the timing was great for him to visit his "grandpa" and visiting the other seniors was good too.
Thanks Kate. Gotta brush my teeth and am on my way.

Squirrely - 24 Feb 2005 19:47 GMT This is good Rose about the doppler. Have they figured out yet what the fluid is from. I know you were thinking the knee.
Is there something they can do to stop this.
I hope the pred has worked and that you are doing much better by now.
Have been thinking of you.

This was just a reoccurrence of the problem I seem to have every two months or so. No one really knows what it is. The family doc stays with the diagnosis of vasculitis. It is not typical fluid, as this fluid really burns. I am much better thanks.

She continues to improve. She has been getting out a bit with the scooter. She is not always happy about her location, though as her mobility has been impaired a lot. Before, she was able to go downtown more than once a day, and wander around, get the mail, and so on. Now it is substantially more difficult.
She is getting there though.
