I am 40, have Cerebral Palsy and I have arthritis in my back, wrists,
and hands.

I am on 800 mg Ibuprofen 2 x a day (once if I don't need a second dose).

I have not yet been refered to a rheumatologist.

I can always tell when the pill wears off--because my hands etc...hurt.

Bonnie, please ask your doctor to refer you to a rheumatologist.  You really
need someone who is an expert to help you and tell you exactly what kind of
arthritis you have.

Yeah I'm kinda wondering why he hasn't done that already  (had arthritis
diagnosed in back since June 2003)--that 800 mg pill lasts about 6
hours--sometimes less--before it starts hurting again in my hands--which
began a couple months ago.

Not gonna put up with it too much longer--waited 4 months of hurting
before I found out why my back was hurting I wanted to know WHY-- and he
finally orders x-ray.

Called doc to find out what his game plan is,,,,,,,,waiting for his call

Just took another four 200 mg Advil tabs.  I use the 800 tabs in the
a.m, and the 2nd dose is the (4) 200 mg tabs.

How long was it before you were sent to a rheumatologist??

In my case it was about 6 years.  Wayyyyy too long.   The RD said I had RA
on the first visit and some people will go 2-3=4 years before the doc says
,,RA....

I had pain in my back, so I went to an ortho MD who
diagnosed my ankylosing spondylitis in 1977 and
put me on Indocine.

I never heard the word "rheumatologist" until 1991,
and when I did start seeing one, she kept me on
Indocine until I dropped her in 1999.

Going to go to my regular doctor on Tuesday.

May try different pain management meds--ibuphrofen 800 mgs. don't work
that long--about 5 or 6 hours for me.

Ibuprofen really is supposed ot only last around 6 hours.  The maximum
prescription dose is 800 mg 4 times/day - I know, I've been on it - but you
really need a referral to a rheumatologist.

Yeah I realized that--

my hands are in pain tonight--will take 400 more mgs before I go to bed

and maybe a cold pack--will numb the pain.....

You can always tell when the IB wears off!

Well my doc put me on Diclofenac (Voltaren), and took two tubes of blood
(rheumatoid panel??) from my hand with a "butterfly needle"
He also sent me to the Hospital for hand x-rays.
I believe he's looking for the type of arthritis, I have.

Bonnie
Caroline Marold - 10 Feb 2005 03:01 GMT
If more than one vial of blood I insist that they use
the butterfly. Otherwise they can blow through the vein
and I don't have that many they can use anymore.
Now you wait in the ASA waiting room for result and the
next doctor visit.

Hopefully doctor  will call with results........awaiting med to arrive
from store in the mail--probably tomorrow....

My new med.......Voltaren......

Bonnie
Bruce - 10 Feb 2005 11:18 GMT
That's a good suggestion.  Only problem is that many labs and blood sites do
not have staff certified to use butterfly.  It is actually a very dangerous
technique when done by an individual not properly trained.  I used to do
tons of them on IV drug users.  Aside from the Doc's I was the only one in
the clinic certified to do them.\

Doctors office called--

I have osteoarthritis......my new med arrived Voltaren 100 mgs extended

I skipped the IBU 800's and immediately took the new one.

How long before it'll kick in ??

The reason the "butterfly needle" is used for me is i have thin
veins....pediatric needle

They poke and bruise and dig the hell outta my arms---my arm veins won't
sit still using the bigger regular needle--bigger bruise too!

Bonnie
Bonnie Brien - 11 Feb 2005 00:29 GMT
I think it is a safe needle..I ask for it all the time they draw blood.
They get blood out of a vein from the top of my hands

Only unsafe in the WRONG hands....My doctor was close by.

I am a real vein problem child (nearly 70 LOL). The vampires normally
bruise my arms and the back of my hands so I look like a long-term
junkie.

The young girls at Clini-Path used to have good success with the
butterfly needles, but, because I'm hooked up in a Clinical Trial I
had to switch to Path Centre. Initially, I had real probs there as
they don't use butterflys. But now I'm OK as one of the females there
is very astute. Gets me to run my hand/s under a warm tap for 5 mins
and uses thinner needles always between my knuckes. Absolutely NO
bruising and FULL vials every time :)

Oh -- sore subject with me. It was 15 years. I might
still have my wrists, fingers, and knee [original
equipment] had I seen one within that first year.
You don't have to wait to be told to see a RD -- you
can demand to see one and with luck you will get a good
one. If you don't you can try a different one.
Sometimes you find an RD who graduated at the bottom of
his class, or you find one with a personality that
doesn't jibe with yours, or you find one who had his
training so long ago and refuses to step into 2005 or
even 1985...
Hope you see one soon.

It took me 2 weeks to get the bonehead doctor who misdiagnosed me to write a
referral to a rheumy. Then it took 2 months to get in to the rheumy. The
crappy PCP told me it was 'just arthritis'. When I asked if it was the
crippling kind (cuz I didn't know the word) he assured me it was not and
prescribed 800 mg. ibuprofen, which did nothing but eat my stomach.

By the time I got the referral I couldn't sleep more than 2 hours at a time
and hat to have help with buttons. By the time I saw the RD, my left leg
wouldn't straighten and hubby had to help me to sit on and get off of the
toilet. Don't wait for the Dr. to decide what to do. Call and request a
referral. Several times if you have to. Time is the enemy right now.

I ended up with a marvelous RD, who took one look at me, injected my knee,
took x-rays, prescribed good meds., and let me listen while he tore into the
PCP for his misdiagnosis. I am still doing well, eleven years later, with
minimal damage, at least none that shows much.

Do it for yourself, cuz nobody else will.

Welcome Bonnie,

Sorry you have to be here, but it's a good place for support and knowledge.
Please go to a specialist to see what kind of arthritis you may have.  Have
you tried Mobic (an anti-inflammatory) or some other NASAID that might help
with the pain and you might not have to take such high doses.  Ask your doc
about this.

Another good thing you can start on is a supplement, Glucosomine and
Chondrontin.  You can take the glucosomine seperate or take them in combo.
This is especially good for osteoarthritis or joints in general.

Hope you find some help here.

Hi Bonnie, nice to meet you :)

Sounds like it time to see the doc and step up treatment.  I can relate to
pills wearing off - the box may say 8 hour relief but 7 hours later.... :)

I'll second the glucosamine.  I've been taking it for a couple months and
have noticed fewer aches.  Arthritis can be annoying (ha!) but there are
ways of getting a lot of relief
