Persistent Gout problems - Sorry if wrong newsgroup

I've searched for a NG that was tailored to 'GOUT' and found none so I hope
somebody here is well versed in treatment.  I am 50 years young, active and
have had gout for 15 years or so.

For the last ten or so of those years, I've learned to control it via diet
and limiting alcohol intake.  I haven't had red meat or pork in ten years!
Now the gout attacks are very infrequent, often over a year apart.

My Health Ins is by Kaiser, and anyone who's ever used them knows their
limitations.  When I go in, the first thing they want of course, is blood
then they stick a needle in the foot to verify that it is infact gout.
Probably normal but the problem is that it seems I always know more about
the affliction than the doctor they send me to.

OK to the point sorry to ramble on ... I had a 'minor' gout attack last
weekend (sat) that was from eating chinese food I thought.  It was typical,
hurting the ball of my right foot.  I started taking Probenicid and Motrin
500's and it seemed to get better but didn't go away.  The next day, I felt
it move to the arch of my foot and I was unable to walk.  By now, the whole
foot is inflamed and instead of taking the Motrin 500's twice a day, I've
upped it to 3 times, every 8 hours.

My Q is this:  is this swelling likely to still be gout?  Typically for me,
it is gone in 72 hours, and the joint that was originally hurt (ball of
foot) is fine now - but the whole rest of the foot is swollen. I thought it
was hurting (at first) from walking on the side of the foot for a couple of
days while the gout was active.  Now I'm in a completely different ball
game.

Typical homeopathics  such as cherry extract and celery seed extract (which
have worked for years on me) have had no effect.

Please, any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Well, I am no doctor, you should probably see a rheumatologist in order
to be properly treated, but...

My husband has gout (strangely we've both gone on a low carb diet and
he hasn't had trouble since - touch wood).  When his gets "bad" it is
as you describe.  He will take Indomethacin, and within a day, or two
at most, his swelling is gone.

The homeopathic stuff never worked for him.

The day that I felt the inflammation/pain move from the ball of my foot to
the center (the arch?) of it, I switched to Indomathicin to see if it would
work better but it didn't.  I switched back the next day to the Naproxin
500's (motrin?) and upped it to 3x per day.  I'm probably like a lot of
others in that I can tolerate the Naproxin better than Indomathicin.

I'm glad that I've still got good and current prescriptions for these things
in the cabinet!

Hi Paul,

I can't help any on the gout or Kaiser insurance but just as an FYI -
naproxen is not the same as Motrin.  Motrin's generic name is ibuprofen.
Naproxen is another generic anti-inflammatory, OTC name of Aleve and
prescription brand name of Naprosyn and Anaprox.

We do have some folks here with gout experience.  Hopefully they'll be along
soon with some advice for you.  I've heard how painful it is and you must be
feeling rather miserable now with such an outbreak of it.
