Char - 02 Feb 2005 04:43 GMT Thought I would let you all know I just got out of the hospital this evening. Been there since midday sunday. Presented with a temp of 103 and flank pain. They hospitalized me with fever of unknown origin. Turns out that, I had what my doctor called "a rip roaring UTI" But now they know what was going on I could be treated just as easily at home. My fever isnt entirely gone but I am much better. The bad news is no Humira until I get a clean bill of health. Char

Char - 02 Feb 2005 16:49 GMT Oh yeah. And now I am Diabetic from the steroids.
05 isnt starting out nearly as well as I had hoped. It looks as though health issues are going to be haunting me this year too.
But Humira is a miracle for me, and I should be back on that in about 10days. And that is a positive, so it isnt all bad news. Char

Gwen Love - 02 Feb 2005 17:17 GMT Char, it isn't fair that someone who loves to cook is diabetic. But you will know how to cook right, so that's a plus. Hope the UTI is over quickly; they are certainly no fun to have. Gwen

Caroline Marold - 02 Feb 2005 23:09 GMT Maybe it is of the temporary type -- Humira working then lower the pred, then maybe with luck, no more diabetic readings. When I am on a high range of pred I always spill sugar [60mg-40mg of the stuff, I run 135 -- 10mg and under I am back to 85]. Duckie

jb - 03 Feb 2005 17:30 GMT Me too guys Its not easy to turn down all those carbs but after a while you adjust to it, Char being the cook that you are. you will have to post us some good recipes. Take care. Have they put you on medication. how high was your bg? everytime I take prednisone my goes up higher. I love to eat all those good things but there are so many things that high bg can do to other parts of your body If I can help you anyway, let me know janice

Dont know what my bg was, but my doctor while I was in the hospital indicated it didnt need immediate attention.
I am having a heck of time getting my mind wrapped around the fact that I am now Diabetic. I really hate that. Char

My dad is diabetic, and all he does is take glucophage (sp?). He just keeps an eye on the *amount* of sugar he ingests, but he still drinks regular soda, eats chocolate (some every day).
Has stopped drinking, but that's a good thing for him. Takes his blood sugar every day, and he's fine. Once in a while he feels light headed, but generally peanuts take care of it (low blood sugar, somehow). May yours be even *less* of a strain than his is.

I really hate that. > Char Sure hope that controlling the diabetes is easy once you get your mind wrapped around the idea. My brother-in-law said getting the diagnosis was the best thing that ever happened to him. He had to change what he ate and when he ate, to a degree. But it made a world of difference in how he felt.

Harvey R. Stone - 04 Feb 2005 04:10 GMT > I am having a heck of time getting my mind wrapped around the fact that I > am > now Diabetic. I really hate that. > Char I did too. One thing though, if you have had steroids lately it will push your glucose count wayyyy up. Even prednisone much less a shot will do it for me. Maybe your count will come back down without them for awhile. :?? Tests will tell.
Harv
Char - 04 Feb 2005 19:27 GMT > Maybe your count will come back down without them for awhile. :?? Thanks Harv. The highest my pred has ever been is 20mg. But I am tapering in an attempt to get off of it entirely. I am down to 10mg at the moment (just dropped to that). Hopefully over the course of the next couple of months, I can get off of it entirely. Char

DianeW - 04 Feb 2005 04:58 GMT Char - Did the diabetes start up the same time as the UTI? The physical stress of an illness and abx can raise your blood sugar you know. I have steroid induce diabetes but my endocrinologist says the bs is being effected by the steroids and if I'm careful with it now, it should go back to normal when I get off of them. On a recent course of abx, my bs went up to 286! But now that I'm off that particular abx, its come back down. I take the steroids first thing in the morning and my sugar runs high thru early afternoon and then drops down. He's giving me a drug called Starlix at breakfast and lunch. What they got you doing girl?

Caroline Marold - 02 Feb 2005 23:05 GMT Hope that is cleared up as quickly as it came. Few more days til I am back on Arava myself so I understand you wanting your DMARD back. Especially since you were getting so much relief from it. Time to be sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Stick around lady -- we miss you. Duckie
