KJ - 27 Jan 2005 13:12 GMT It seems that some people are under the impression that Kimmy and I intentionally destroyed AI so that we could sell it, make a profit and live high off of your donations. Just in case anyone here shares those thoughts, here is a copy of a post I made on another site addressing these concerns:
I am shocked, angry and very hurt by some of the things that are being said about Kimmy and I, some by people that I considered my friends. Contrary to popular belief, we are not sitting on a beach in Aruba, enjoying all the money we made from AI donations and the sale of the site. We are still freezing our butts off in Ohio.
AI was hit by the "neverevernosanity worm" that also wiped out some 40,000 other sites that week. Every single page of the site was gone and in it's place was "this page was defaced by neverevernosanity worm." Our server backed up the site every 24 hours, unfortunately, it backed it up right after we were hit. So the back up was an exact copy of the defaced site. Four years of work, 100's of pages and articles...gone. You think you guys were upset when you found the site gone? Think of how we felt! You felt at home at our house, we built the durn place brick by brick!
Since it happened right before Christmas, deciding what to do had to wait. We both have kids, we couldn't say "Sorry guys, there will be no gifts or Christmas dinner, I have a website to build." Life went on! While life was going on and we were trying to figure out how we could possibly start over again, a man approached us about buying the AI name. (He has NO connection to Healthology as far as I know, I don't know where that rumor started).
After MUCH soul searching, and trying to make sure he wanted to do the right thing with AI, we agreed to sell him the name, along with what files could be found. I am not sure how much you think domain names go for these days, but unless the domain name is good for a porno site, they aren't worth much.
Shortly after the deal was made, he learned of a site called archives.org. Ever hear of it? We hadn't either! Things might be different if we had! They had a stored copy of the site from January 2004. That is what the new owner used to put AI back up.
As far as emailing everyone and telling them what happened? I couldn't. The mailing list went with the site. And judging from the comments I've seen those I did tell didn't believe me anyways!!!!
What happened to *all* those donations? There is $9.73 cents left in AI's paypal account. I will be happy to give it to whoever wants it the most. The last two months that the site was running, the server and chat fee were paid out of our pockets because the money wasn't there.
Now, if anyone still has a problem with what happened, tell me to my face. Don't talk about me behind my back. Losing AI was one of the more painful things I have had to deal with. And for some of you to say it was a planned and profitable event makes it even more painful. I just can't believe that some people think so little of me, that hurts, it truly does. :(

Don't let a few idiots rule the day Tina. No one who actually knows you would think you did this on purpose, or that you profited from it. Please accept my thanks for many years of service to the arthritis community through AI and its predecessors. Just go take another look at that trophy and remember we love you.

Diane - 27 Jan 2005 13:32 GMT kj, please know that whoever thinks you intentionally destroyed AI is in the eeniest teensiest minority! i can just imagine how you felt losing that site. it was your and kimmy's beloved baby. i DID have an icky thought about the man who bought it--that he might have been the destroyer--but i'm assuming that's just the novelist in me running amuck.
hugs to you and kimmy.

Anybody here that has any doubts, for crying out loud you should have sense enough to trust Tina and Kimmy by now.
Tina, Kimmy, you already know there are people who are always ready to think the worst. Some of them are just grumpy pessimists, others see only clouds. And I'd bet a few of your detractors are really only concerned that you didn't get a bad deal from the buyer and expressed their concern badly.
So love and concern and a big thank you to both of you for an era that ends and for a labor of love.

I get the impression that there are a lot of what they call on SlashDot Anonymous Cowards out there. I know it's hard to ignore them, but, please try. No amount of contribution I could make could pay for the value that I got out of AI.
Thanks to you and Kimmy for that.

Ann - 27 Jan 2005 15:22 GMT Wow, this sure wasn't what I had hoped to read this morning. I am so sorry that there are people who were part of a loving and caring group who would come up with a piece of fiction like this. I enjoyed AI over the years and am thankful to KJ and Kim for the work they put into it. Makes me glad I am not part of that other NG where these things were posted.

I can't believe what I'm seeing here and I'm so sorry it happened. Just like the thing with Melinda, there will always be people who want to see the worst in humankind so they create it in their own minds.
Don't let them poison your thoughts against the arthritis community at large. Most of us think you two are the bees' knees.

Harvey R. Stone - 27 Jan 2005 15:54 GMT Hi KJ,,,, It was sad and understandable that you and Kim were just crushed by what took place with your site. I would like to crush the little B!@#$ that did the worm. Talk about a sick mind,,,, terrorist,,, SOB,,, Aaah well, it is about live and learn,,, AND BACKING UP info. In today's world, the doers of this world get taken apart by the non doers at the first sign of weakness as though it would make them stronger by the doing of it. I know it hurts to have people you have known and you think you know them to turn on you,,,, a person that has proven friendship and worth over and over..... just learn from it and be stronger,,, and you are and weed these people out of your life if you can,,,, sometimes you can't. To go through all of this and be very ill at the same time,,, Well,,, stand back from it if you can and be proud of who you are and what you have done and I say you meaning you and Kimmy. Only have one more thing to add...... Do not let the little minds of this world bring you down to their level. Harv

spodosaurus - 27 Jan 2005 16:31 GMT You were paying for this to be hosted professionally, right? Sorry, I've never been to AI, and I don't know the history etc. However, any business should be doing several backups, not just one. If they really only made one backup, then please let us know who were being paid for such shoddy service. For example, a backup routine that backs up the entire server to tape every day of the week should have been employed. When the next Sunday rolls around, the tape from the previous Sunday is overwritten and so on and so forth. Having only one backup for such a business is inexcusable and extremely negligent (the fact that they didn't keep their server secure is another indicator of negligence, that worm should never have gotten hold). I doubt you have the energy or inclination, but that sort of negligence is probably grounds for a lawsuit.

Newsgroup Spambuster - 27 Jan 2005 17:27 GMT What??? Surely no one can be that rediculous!!!
KJ and Kimmy, I am sooooo sorry that anyone could even begin to think a thought as rediculous as this!
Anyone that even half knows the two of you know that you both put your heart and souls into AI and then some! And to even think that the two of you could get rich off of the donations, well, that is almost laughable, especially since this is usually around the time of year that you start your fundraising and requests for donations, so that means last years donations are pretty much used up. Honestly, anyone that would accuse the two of you of such things has to be majorly insecure and very hurtful and vindictive!!!
Anyone who really knows the two of you could never even entertain such a thought!
I personally thank the both of you (and your families) for all of the time and effort that you put into AI. No one, and I mean, no one, could have done a better job of running AI and of nursing/nurtchering it along as well as the two of you did. When AI was sold, I have no doubt what so ever that a piece of each of you went with it!!!
Please know how much the two of you are respected, loved, and cared about and please don't let some childish and unfounded accusations get the best of you!!!
Hugs and many a heartfelt thanks to the both of you!!!

A Barna - 27 Jan 2005 18:17 GMT Hi KJ,
I have to wonder if "some people" has ever built a web site, or if "some people" have any idea what it would cost to have a web site as comprehensive as AI commercially built & maintained.
Even with the archive at http://www.archive.org/web/web.php the new owner hasn't been able to get everything put back the way it was & if he plans on changing anything I'm sure he would be glad to have "some people" help to recode the pages for the same wages that you & Kimmy were paid to create them in the first place. :)
What?! You didn't get paid scale?? ^_^
KJ, I just hope you & Kimmy got paid well for the content & not just for the name, & that "some people" can get their heads out of their butts.

Ya know better than to give any credence to some jealous cowards, so don't. Stop that right now and consider the sources and doncha get yer feelings hurt.
Those who couldn't take what Kimmy wrote ( that it was getting to be too much to keep up with) at face value weren't anyone you'd care to have around anyways.
I greatly enjoyed working with ya both and we had us some fun, didn't we? Doesn't much matter beyond that...no one can take away what you contributed...no one can diminish that.

Kimmy and Tina - obviously there are some idiots in the world that don't have a clue! If I had money I would send it to you so you could sit on a beach in Aruba - might pay for a small portion of the time you have spent on this website! Please accept my thanks and also my congratulations that someone paid for the site. I know the sale probably wasn't much money but hopefully the stress is off. Whoever was complaining obviously doesn't know how much work you and Kimmie put into AI or what you got "paid" for it. The fact is that you two didn't get paid and usually ended up paying. Even if you made a hugh amount of money by selling the name, it wouldn't even begin to cover the cost of the time you put into the site.
I think you two are great and I know a lot of other people out there share my feelings. Thank you both for all that you have put into your sites as well as your unselfish gift of time, love, and yourselves. You two are heros in my eyes.

> <snort> ROFL! > Nann In all truth, we might as well smile about something like tubes in our ears because nothing does as good a job for what they are meant to do. If things do not get better, I may have to get them myself. I have a little virtigo and seems that I have to pop a little by holding my nose and blowing gently and then when they pop, I hold pressure and let them blow back slowly. I know,,, not to smart,,, but it relieves the pressure and I can hear again. I am scared to death that I am going to not be able to catch myself if I start to topple over. Believe me, I am not above taking a quick sit down and it does not matter where I am. It is better than falling over sideways or backward. I have had to stop the Enbrel, the TB anti-bio. I have been coughing and getting cup fulls of fluid out of my lungs as I try to sleep. I am starting to cough less and feel better. Soo it is starting to do the job and I would probably be over this if I had stopped Enbrel one shot sooner. How this stuff got into my ears???? I just do not know. I have not be blowing my nose,,, at all... Now that I have competely grooooosed everyone out with my fluids problems. I just thought I would say something in my way for being sorry if my humor caught her off guard,,, so to speak. I will be quiet again. Harv
