This is my 3rd attempt in 6 months. if i yell at anyone please overlook
and ignore it. im one day in, using the Commit lozenge. the patch
doesn't work for me. i have to make it work this time. i have to.

i have been smoking for forty years this year. i started at 13 and have
never stopped for longer than 3 months or so.
my father smoked 2-3 packs of non-filter camels and my mother smoked 2
packs of marlboro a day.
i believe i was inhaling so much second hand smoke as a child i was
already addicted when i started.

am one severely 'addicted to nicotine' human being. i feel a lot
stronger this time than the most recent other 2 attempts.

I pray that you can quit! I've been quit for about 12 years now. That was
the best thing I ever did for myself!
Good Luck and may God Bless you so that you can stop!

Yay!

You can do this, m'dear. One thing I didn't suggest but am here is to
get yer doc to give you an anti-depressant 'script. Better to be on one for
a while than to take up the s#@t sticks again.

It'll be so much better for yer lungs...the Valley Fever was enuff to
have, right?

Acacia will appreciate having you around longer! Yo GO, jhh!!

oh rosie my sweet, im a gonna take you up on the phone support. it could
make a big difference. i hit periods that i call pseudo 'blackouts'. i
will have a pack of cigs but will not have an awareness of the going and
getting them process. i usually experience 2 or 3 of these episodes in
the first week. i am good about tossing them and getting right back on
track AFTER i have 2 or 3 smokes. i hope i can eliminate this weakness
this time.

Johnie, me love:
I was a smoker too, if u can believe it- a perfect thing like me. I
started smoking as a youngster when my middle sister and I used to
steal my oldest sister's cig butts and smoke them. She always used to
leave a good inch at the bottom. I took it up seriously at  about 14
although used to do it on the sly as my mother would never have
allowed it.  I smoked when i went to university, as in those days we
could smoke during classes (imagine).

I never smoked at school as I did not want the kids to know i did
that, so only smoked at home at night. Usually that amounted only to
a couple or three  pkgs a week unless i went out. Then it could be a
pack a night.

What cured me though was watching my uncle go through treatment for
lung cancer. When I found out about his diagnosis, i stopped cold
turkey.
He had one lung removed, but had problems for the whole year that he
lived following his diagnosis. I held his hand as he died.

And that thought would prevent me from ever wanting to start again.

So.... hang in there Johnnie.

( Yes, I am trying a "tough love" approach)
Smoking does too many bad things, in spite of the way if makes us feel
temporarily. Good luck with quitting, and if it doesn't work, keep
quitting. You have to be there for Acacia when he graduates, moves
into adulthood, and perhaps marries.

thanks everyone. im pretty skittish as usual for the first few days. i
did go over and loaded up the smoking group. i will use that for
additional support. its just good to check in and see other people
getting there one day/hour at a time. i am letting everyone know this
time and that makes it a bit more serious than last month when i only
told my lucy i was trying again.
alex, i smoked cigars without inhaling too much off and on. i would
break down and buy a pack of cigs every couple of months. i floundered
in that cycle for about a year. Years ago i smoked a pipe. maybe 20
years ago.i still have it and some tobacco. might be a bit stale.>g<

night everyone...thanks again...your support really means alot.

My father-in-law quit when he was in his late sixties.  After cutting back
to the point where he figured he was just torturing himself.  I'm sure he
had started by the time he was 13 as well.

I was so proud of him.  And got a kick out of his reason.  He was at heart a
cheap SOB and just hated the price of cigarettes more than he enjoyed
smoking.  And he may have been cheap but he was fair.  He didn't feel right
spending that money on himself after he and my MIL were retired and on a
fixed income.

We have a friend here who is the same way.  She's the only one in her family
to successfully quit and she says it was the cost that finally got to her.
She had a heart attack last year and was so glad she could say she'd already
quit a couple of years earlier.

I switched to a pipe when I stoped drinking in 1976 & after about
a year was able to go days with out smoking. Now I have a pipe
full because I want to not because I have to. Pipe tobacco
doesn't have the extra chemicals that cigarretts do.

I am behind you all the way. If you want to yell at someone you can yell at
me. ;-)

Oh sweetie, I hope you can quit. I know I have tried several times also and
have not made it either. I did get down from 2 1/2 packs to 1/2 pack before
Jim got layed off. Now I am traveling back and forth between one a pack and
the 1/2 pack. I know I need to quit because of the lung issues but have not
had any luck yet.

I sure do hope it works for you, I hope it is easy also this time for you to
do it.

Thinking of you and praying for you big time.

Johnie, I'm there with you.  I started 35 years ago, at age nine (no smokers
in the family.  just one rebellious kid).  This is also my third attempt in
six months, though I once quit for several years (a long time ago).

I just had a weak moment, but am determined not to do it again tomorrow.  I
can now go up to two weeks at a time, but always seem to cave in at that
point and have one.  Still, two in a month is a long way from one after the
other.  I am trying to do this without any products, so it is interesting.
I can't wear a patch, and detest the gum.  But I am going to do it this
time.

I used to think of myself as an ex-smoker, yet inevitably ended up starting
again just when I thought I had it licked.  I have come to believe that
there is no such thing as an ex-smoker.  Only recovering nicotine addicts.
If I can remember that, I think I will have enough fear to stay away from it
for good.

I am so happy to hear you are trying to kick it as well.  I know how tough
it is, but also that it is possible.  I'm rooting for you.

janet, this is great. im rooting for ya. it sounds like we have a very
similar pattern. i am with you re:the 'recovering nicotine addict' being
the only honest state i can exist in. with smoking it has become real
clear that i will always be in some 'state of recovery'.

so lets keep rooting for each other until we both beat this thing. i
won't be sleeping tonight. that's pretty normal the first few nights i
stop. hopefully i will be able to nap a bit tomorrow afternoon.

hang tough tonight. talk to ya tomorrow.

Johnie, I hope you managed to get some sleep.  I finally conked out after
pouring some ginger tea with honey (which, btw, can often help with my
cravings).

Be strong today.  I have it easy, as I will be at an annual gathering where
there isn't a smoker in the lot.  It will be board games and relaxation all
day.  As long as there isn't any freezing rain on the highway, it should be
a day free of all stresses.  I'll even get to visit with my granddaughter.
I hope your day is a stress-free one as well... it helps so much.

Take care,

JLee,
a very tiny , small amount of sleep passed through the shadow-land, just
across the street from the canyon i call home. im going to have some
ginger tea.probably my most dominant craving and prevalent desire is
ginger. it never goes away. Strong is the cadbury big word of the
day...and i don't indulge myself like i might if my 'ginger' source was
as secure as Sonoran honey...my day has turned out okay. If you got to
spend some time with your granddaughter i will venture a guess and
predict that you had a great afternoon. no stress here and it does make
the difference.

I know what you can do to stay busy this week, Johnie. Come up and help me
finish painting Rachel's room. It's going to be two shades of lavender.
Right now, it's one shade of lavender on two walls and the rest are a grungy
white color. I wore myself out climbing up and down the ladder, taping off
the wood beams, closet and window.

Rach is thrilled, I'm exhausted and there's still more to do. It'll keep
until next weekend though. You should be able to make it here by then,

LOLOL  Oooh john.    You know what is irrational?????  Smoking after having
been through Mouse dust lung disease.   If you light up another
cigarette,,,, why don't you say outloud,,,,,, why don't I just pick a bridge

One of the things that helped alot for me was that I
washed all of the clothes, sheets, towels, curtains --
EVERYTHING so that the smell of cigarettes was just not
in the house.
Of course, if there is someone else in the house
smoking, you will have a huge amount of trouble. Really
works well if all in the house quit. That teasing smell
of smoke left in the house is sooo tempting.
Time for Spring cleaning. :)

Recovering nicotine addict is right. Took me nearly 8
years after I had laid them down the last time to
completely shake them from my system. Never smoked
again but sure wanted one every time I was drinking,
after eating, sex....    rofl
After 10 years of being smoke free my insurance policy
yearly fee dropped the amount of premium I had to pay.
That should tell you something. :)

Boy does that sound familiar!  I quit many moons ago for nearly ten years,
and never once did I get through a day without at least one craving.  I
started again when a major crisis hit (ya know, one of those situations that
leave you shaking uncontrollably), and I reached for a friend's pack... and
didn't even realize I was doing it.  Still an automatic response after all
that time.  Once I had one, that was it.  Hooked again.

Didn't just want one after eating, drinking, sex... hell, if I was hungry
I'd have one INSTEAD of eating.  If I was out and wanted one more drink, I'd
smoke INSTEAD of drinking.  And if it was a dry spell, I'd smoke INSTEAD of
sex.  Hell, all in all it was a pretty effective substitute!  LOL.

That is wonderful, Janet!  getting it down to two cigarettes/month is a huge
accomplishment.    I hope you can finally make it past that point, but even
if you don't you have helped out your health so very much already.  And how
is that food tasting htese days?

Food?  Amazing.  I can taste it now.  This has helped immensely, as my
weight problem is in large part due to not eating often enough (then eating
processed foods when I finally get hungry).  Now that I can taste the food,
I am eating more often, and have lost 20 lbs!  I just hope my taste buds
don't lead me to overeating now.

Unfortunately, my sense of smell is also greatly improved.  I had no idea
how many offensive smells there were out there.  Ugh.

Johnie.

You will never regret it if your succeed. I started smoking at 16 and
gave up when my wife and I got married. I was 33 then. I had tried
several times before, gave up for a couple of months and then started
again.

The most important thing about giving up smoking is to stay stopped.
Anybody can give up, the secret lies in having the will to resist
temptation in the future. - Like with drugs or alcohol.

The way it heppened with me was that my wife heard my morning cough and
decided that something had to be done. She announced one day that she
had given up smoking. Not to be beaten, I gave up the following day. We
have never smoked since - that was 37 years ago.

You are bound to feel the urge to smoke - like after meals when you see
somebody else light up - resist it man.

Oh - and good luck

This will be the hardest and yet the best thing you
have ever done. Was smoking three packs a day when I
quit. It was hard, hard, hard. That was in 1971. Feel
free to yell at me all you want and I will pretend I
don't hear you. :)
Just think about that grandson...

Good luck johnie!  Will send out random vibes when you least expect them... :)
Forty years is a long time to be fighting that particular demon - but I know
you are strong enough.

johnie, you are welcome to yell at me all you want!  I've never had to go
through this business, but I'll do whatever I can to help you quit.

Those little "blackouts" of yours sure do illustrate the power of habit.
Makes me think of the times I've driven a very familiar route home and can't
remember doing it when I get there.  I only realize I'm doing it if something
unusual happens.  Your buying and smoking habit is so familiar, you just
don't realize you're doing it.  Now, if there were just some way to have a
shock collar that would go off each time you tried to touch a
pack............

you have my prayers and good vibes that this time you'll beat the habit!

That's the way I was when I quit coffee.  It had been so much a part of my
life for so many years that I found myself automatically making myself a cup
when I hit the door at work.  But I did manage to break the habit and I know
you will, too.  We will keep you in our prayers!

Quick.....patent the idea before someone else does.  <g>

Kinda like the invisible fence around a property's perimeter

There is a tv commercial for something -- maybe
insurance? -- with a guy protecting his beer and has
one around his roommates neck -- guess the desire for
the beer was too great or the roommate too stupid cause
it didn't seem to be working buzzz  buzzz buzzz
