well, i finally dragged him to the doc yesterday, the fifth day of
temps between 101-102. he has no respiratory symptoms, although this
started with a headache, so the doc is guessing it's his ulcerative
colitis/crohns flaring. he hasn't had an attack in over 4 years, so
he's understandably bummed, but is starting to agree that might be what
it is. it's different than in the past, though, because there's no
bleeding this time. the doc sent him immediately for a cat scan and we
don't have the results yet. i'm still being very careful because we
know he's got SOMETHING going on and if it's infectious, i don't want
it.

so, i am learning what it's like to be the caretaker of a person with
an autoimmune-disease person. i just want to make him well and can't do
it.

hugs, diane

Diane, hope John gets over this quickly and you don't catch anything.  My
cousin had/has Chrones and had to have surgery after a real bad attack a few
years ago.  He started it in his early 20s.  It is certainly not good to
have.

hugs for diane and john both.  it's a good thing he has you there pushing him
to go to the doctor.  i hope they get it all back under control readily.
crohn's is just no fun at all.

heck, i get that wanting to make him well when mike just has a cold, much
less something chronic!  come to think of it, i also get it when his bipolar
tries to get him again, as it has lately.  fortunately his increased depakote
dose is finally kicking in.

in some ways, that's got to be even worse. i'm glad he's good about
taking his meds. i know so many people with bipolar disease who refuse
to and their loved ones pay the price.

Mike's case is unique as he has late-onset bipolar.  Didn't hit until after
he turned 50.  Anecdotal evidence makes us suspect the same thing happened
with his dad.  Anyway, the advantage is he had all those years as a regularly
functioning adult and adult maturation before he had to deal with it.  All of
that helped him reason out why he should co-operate with treatment - though
he didn't do so until this path to the priesthood was threatened.

Now that he's on the meds he does miss his the early weeks of hypomainic
spells, but he is happy to be rid of the later, short-tempered, totally
exhausted weeks.  And he is so glad to only get bummed out about things to a
norma degree.

I'm sure it must be so much harder to come to terms with it all when it hits
you in your teens.

(((((((((diane)))))))))))it can be so difficult to want to be able to do
something and know there is nothing you can do to make it better.
((((((((((john))))))))sigh . . . 5 days with a temp.  some guys have this
john wayne thing they just won't let themselves let go of.  i wish they all
would.

in the first few years after we were married, butch did that kind of thing
too.  i'd get so exhasperated with his delaying treatment for days that i'd
ask him, "would you rather i drive you to the doctor now, or should i just
call a coroner to pick you up in a few more days?"  believe me, i was that
exhasperated---one of those times he had a broken bone and one time, he
needed immediate surgery and his bp was outrageously/dangerously high!

hopefully, the scan gives them clarity on what john's health situation is
about and they can get a handle on it quickly.  and you keep taking good
care of you, sweetie, until they do know it is not contageous.  and then,
you just keep taking good care of you in other ways, because you need to,
and cuz you are special to us.

let us know what the scan outcome is, please.  crohns is no picnic.  one of
alex's highschool girlfriends had a lovely woman for a grandmother who had
crohns.  it was so difficult listening to all that she went through at the u
of w med center.  i was wanting to just hold her and tell her everything was
going to be ok and i didn't have a clue if she would be ok or not.

good news in that john's cat scan didn't show any recurrence of his
ulcerative colitis/crohns (i keep saying both because his doctor says
what he has is sort of in between). no abcess or any other bad stuff.
his bloodwork showed mega infection, though, (no surprise) so the doc
thinks it's a bacterial gastroenteritis. i'm glad i've been as cautious
as i have been about handwashing. his fever is a tad lower than
yesterday and he's still barely eating but he is definitely improving.
the first few days he couldn't get out of bed; today he did his
laundry. yipee!

duckie, you're right. it's harder in many ways to be on the "well" side
of illness. i mentioned this here one time before: my sister, who has
ms and whom i love dearly, had to have a battery of icky medical tests.
i told her  that i wished i could take the tests for her, and i meant
it. it would have been easier on me to take the tests than to worry
about her taking them. anyhow, her response: "you're sick!"
so i guess she doesn't feel the same way.  :-)

that's all good news for john and you!  lower temp is a good sign.  up and
doing laundry today is a good sign.  eating with gastroenteritis is going to
be touch and go for a while, i would think.  but that he is eating anything
at all is a good sign.  we will take any and all improvements!<smile>  did
they put him on an abx yet?

i hear that on such deep levels.  there were so many times i so wished i
could have been butch's proxy for him, for what he went through.  i'm glad
john has you, diane.  you have a very loving heart.

I guess my brother and I are the same way - I keep saying I can't imagine
having to deal with his Type 1 diabetes and he keeps saying he can't imagine
living witht he chronic joint pain.  As Mike always says, "better the divil
you know........"

This fits into the 'you guys are really made for each
other'. You are seeing the other side of the coin now
and it is not a familiar place. Sitting the hospital
room with my husband during that blood infection
incident was not something I want to repeat either. I
am much more comfortable being the strong one dealing
with my disease -- not the strong one waiting while
someone else is sick. It is a learning and humbling
experience. Hope he is feeling better soon.
