What do you do for restless legs?  So irritating not to be able to sleep
because of the weird feeling in your legs!  I dont have twitching, just
a bit of tingling and restlessness.
Anyone have this prob and know what to do?
Am on Humira and 8mg pred...have been reducing the pred
gradually...maybe that is it!

Think of you all often and pray for you daily.

actually, I get up and get on the computer (if it's available!  LOL) and sit
there jiggling my legs like there's no tomorrow until I'm so exhausted I
can't do it any more.  Then I go to bed and generally sleep well.

I do take Zanaflex, a muscle relaxer, for my fibro and have learned the the
restless legs thing is worse for the first couple of hours after taking it,
so I don't take it near bedtime any longer.

But the jiggle thing works well for me.  My husband calls it the "jim-jams"
for some reason and has become quite accustomed to seeing me at the computer
trying to get back to sleep-ability.

I can sympathize with you cause I have also had this problem.Nanns idea is
one way to get some relief. I also take neurontin for neuropathy in my feet
and that seems to help my RLS.  I have spent many nites up jiggling my legs
because I couldnt sleep. The strange thing was it didnt happen til I got
into bed.
hope some relief will be soon

Hi Polly,
I have a problem with this when I lay "wrong" whether in bed or on the
couch. Sometimes I can resolve it by switching positions. If that doesn't
work, I take a big old pain pill which knocks me out!

The withdrawal from pred sets mine off worse so that
could be it for you as well. The TKR has set my
restless leg stuff off really big time... They have
doubled my Neurontin dose so now up to 600 mg and that
helps a lot.

My theory is it is caused by a low-fat diet. Just my theory. Nothing to
back it up. Are you on a low-fat diet?

Good fats? Maybe I should say my theory is this is caused by a low
saturated fat diet.

Do you have any reason for this theory? I mean there must be something
that helped you connect the two.

Restless Leg Syndrome/Periodic Limb Movement Disorder can be caused by a
wide variety of problems, including low iron levels and electrolight
imbalances.  It can also occur as a centrally mediated condition, similar to
Parkinsons.  In fact, many drugs developed for Parkinsons are used in the
treatment of RLS/PLMD.  One such is Mirapex, which is what I use.

A competent neruologist or sleep specialist should be able to help you find
a treatment that works for you.

My experience with a mild case when on a low saturated diet. Plus a couple
other anecdotes. I lump leg twitches, restless legs, and a leg falling
asleep all as the same.

After switching to a Paleolithic diet, which is high in saturated fats, it
went away. But not immediately. And not 100% of the twitches.

So by asking here I'm trying to see if all the people complaining about
this are on a low (or no) saturated fat diet.

Okey dokey. I tend to put restless legs in a group on their own.

Dietary changes, from my experience, take a couple of weeks at least to
have an effect, so that fits.

the problem is don they are not all the same. RLS is a very complex DX.
Mine is pretty much untreatable. Some relief with opiods. With 2 sleep
studies it was determined that its all neuro. Even when i think im
asleep im being jolted awake every 3 to 8 seconds. I havent had a real
nights sleep in 2 years. I have been offered some very potent
experimental drugs but the side effects are just too nasty.
Some RLS is more muscle related and can be treated with muscle
relaxants. I think this is the category you are dealing with. It would
seem logical that it could be helped with diet.

Have you tried the Parkinsons drugs Johnie?  It takes a pretty high dose of
Mirapex to keep my RLS under control.

walt, this is a class of drug i have never been offered. i will put it
on my list for my next RD appt. i am fortunate to have an RD whose
judgment i trust. i will report back what she has to say.
thanks, i have read a little about its use. have you had any side effect
or interaction issues? what dose are you on?

I take 3 mg/day, spread throughout the day.  It is a little sedating, so you
have to watch that.  Otherwise, I've had nothing but good success with this
drug.

Had RL before while eating a low fat diet which wasn't
helping with the weight. Now eating lots of fats
compared to 10 years of low fat food. Only change in my
restless legs was the TKR. So as usual, any theory and
my body don't jib but nothing new there. :) Let me add
though that if it is working for you, then it is a good
theory. I've got a few of those myself -- one in
particular involves all my allergies and the number 10.

I took Quinine Sulfate and started taking a minimum of 1200mg of Calcium a
day.
Klonopin also helps.
RLS is SO frustrating.  good luck

I feel for you.  I have restless legs quite often.  I can't take any muscle
relaxers because that will cause a real blow up of it.  It is the closest I
ever come to wanting to off myself.  I have had them since I was a young
child.  Mom used to call them "growing pains" and said they will get better.
I remember being eight years old and writhing on the floor for what seemed
like hours.  I have found the only thing that stops them is Darvocet or
another pain reliever like Ultram or Vicodin.  Of course, doctors will not
give you rx for them because they don't believe in restless legs.  They
think it is just something you have to live with.

Sometimes I watch those Irish dancers and think that I could do that easily
with my restless legs.  I don't have to worry about adding exercise to my
life because I get at least an hour's worth of heavy exercising whenever I
have a bout, which is about twice a week.  I have tried magnesium, iron, and
all the other "miracle supplements" and they don't help.

Good luck.  I hope you can find relief.

Val, if your doctors don't believe in RLS, get new doctors.  Seriously, it
is a well defined medical condition with specific treatment protocols.  Have
you seen a sleep specialist?

I get restless legs as well but I also feel like my skin is too tight
on my legs.  I drink soda water with Quinine (my RA doctor's
suggestion)which also helps my digestion.  I also massage my legs and
feet with lotion or get my husband to do it before I go to bed.  It
really helps me.

Good luck.
