Hi again...
Well, it seems AOL lied to me. Go figure LOL! When I click on newsgroups
today, a window comes up with the exact message that was in the supposed *hoax*
posts saying that AOL is disbanding newsgroups in early 2005. I wrote more
letters complaining and haven't heard back. I don't expect to. Seems like we'll
be losing newsgroups shortly. If we do, I'm done with AOL. So, I need to find a
good newsreader. AOL's is incredibly easy to use and navigate. I've been
spoiled. This will be a big change. Already tried the German one a couple of
times. I don't like it. Had a lot of problems with it and don't want to use it
again unless I have to. Any suggestions? I'm downloading Free Agent as I type
so I can check it out. Any comments...good or bad? If anyone has any ideas,
could you email me please (PattyDFX1@aol.com), as I'm not getting any posts on
AOL right now.
Thanks, as always, for the help : )

Not that I use it, though I will be trying again, since I got a new
tower, but...  I've heard lots of good things about Agent (and Free
Agent):

Agent is much better than free agent you can filter at will, which you
can't do with free agent.  Thunderbird might be a good choice they
have a newsreader and there is always Outlook express.  Are you
getting your internet connection through AOL or do you have an
provider like Comcast then have AOL as your ISP?  If you have
something like the later set-up your dsl provider might have
newsgroups.  Berlin server has worked well for me. just enter in the
password into your news reader software and you should never have to
fool with it again.
Agent has been worth every penny I paid for it.  In the meantime you
might keep track of us via google groups. Good luck I think someone
should call AOL and find out what is going on.  -- MZ

LOL Kimmy! Patty IS pissed LOL! But, the post I sent thru google came
thru in about 2 seconds. That's way quicker than AOL ever was. My
problem with google is that there's no way to mark messages read, so I
have to keep track of what time I was last reading. Otherwise, it's so
much cleaner and easier than it used to be. Gotta put on my thinking
cap. That's gonna be hard because my brain's been outta town lately
<bg>. Figures, I'm ready to come back and AOL won't let me wahhhhhh!  :

Well, I'm on google now. Let's see what happens. Agent looked great.
But, I just found out that AOL doesn't support it grrrrrr! I think I'm
going to network my computer into our cable with the others in the
house. I'll have way more options when I ditch AOL I guess. This is SO
aggravating!

I'm open for suggestions too and I'm really bummed about AOL doing this.

You might try the Berlin news server many of us use it even though our
ISP provides free access.  A few folks have had trouble but mostly it
has been a positive experience. They have detailed description on how
to configure your browser it is very simple.

I love the German group and have never had any problems
but maybe I am just lucky. ;)  I also love the fact
that they filter out the porn stuff which you do see
when you visit Google and that is just fine by me. I
read my newsgroups using Netscape BTW.

I use Agent and the German server.  I like the filtering also not too
much but it does keep out the really obnoxious junk.   OE or
Thunderbird are really easy to use,  we can help you configure your
browser.  You can enter the password directly into your browser and
never fool with it again. Dump AOL they don't need your business.

BTW -  Google does keep track of what you read. The "read more" turns
to purple after you look at it.  Also new posts on older threads show
up in bold.  Once you scan your eye through it you can pick up the
difference it is subtle but definitely there. --mz

i had something like 73,000 hits when i entered "free newsgroup readers" in
google's search engine.  there's gotta be some other easy to use, with
thread marking and filtering features that are accessible for aol.

i lost my comcast giganews, briefly and for the first time ever, yesterday.
had to reset the newsgroup list 3 times before i could access asa, again.
of course, i lost all my "marked read" threads.  soooo, i have no idea where
i'm at and am starting over.

good luck, you guys on aol.  i'd drop broadband comcast in a heartbeat if
they permanently dropped newsgroups.  nah-uh.  comcast better not.

kate have you tried the berlin server?  I have the berlin server on
agent and I have giganews on OE, but I like the Berlin server better.

I just switched from AOL to Google Groups to read the news groups.  So
far, so good.  But this is my first post so I don't know how well it's
going to suit me.  I was so accustomed to the way the newsgroups
appeared on AOL.  BTW, I think my nickname will show up as "kestrel"
but I have been reading and posting to ASA for almost 5 years as
"joyhton."

Read you loud and clear!   Why don't you dump AOL since they dumped
you?  -- MZ

I still have all the other AOL stuff.  Just not the newsgroups.
Frankly, I have been using Google for a few years to look up
information, find odd things I want to buy online, etc.

For instance I recently went on a Google search for Tubigrips for my
ex-husband.  I didn't even know what they are and his description of
them left a lot to be desired.  But Google actually found the
manufacturer.  FYI, Tubigrips are sort of like compression stockings
but they are much easier to put on.  His feet and lower legs are badly
swollen, so the visiting nurse brought him a pair of Tubigrips.  She's
trying to find some more for him.  I'm using compression knee socks
myself for venous insufficiency.

So, I'll stick with AOL for the time being.  But I'll think about
trying another ISP.
