Mom had her laminectomy, and the surgery part seemed to go well, but
an underlying electrolyte imblance continues to concern.

Like so many, she's been taking calcium supplements and osteoporosis
drugs for years, including a Tums or two per day to calm the tummy
after the NSAIDs and such.

Anybody ever see problems with phosphorus, relating to, well, anything
- the calcium levels, osteo drugs, diet, age, and last but not least,
renal disease?

Thanks.

I forgot to add, there is of course a relationship between calcium and
phosphorus levels in the body, but it seems this needs to be kept
carefully in balance, supplementing one can decrease the other, which
I suspect is going on in this case, but it's complex ...

i'm glad to hear the surgery went well for your mother.  thank you for
updating us.

i can't remember now, which drug i was on that adversely interacted with
calcium.  have you tried doing a drug check for interactions between all of
her 'scripts and all her supplements combined (including the tums)?  here's
a link, where you can list everything she's taking, to do that:

http://www.drugstore.com/pharmacy/drugchecker/default.asp?atrx=dps-16&atrxp1=529
01&atrxp2=1&atrxp3=%2Fpharmacy%2Fdrugchecker%2Fdefault%2Easp&atrxp4=1066

and yes, if a kidney condition exists, too much consumed phosphorus can
worsen the situation.  we had to be very careful about what butch ate when
he was on dialysis.

hope that helps.

My mother had kidney stones for over 20 years with a
normal [don't you hate that word] parathyroid numbers.
The stones were made of calcium so they told her to
stop eating or drinking calcium of any kind. When her
kidneys started failing due to her peeing calcium
crystals, they finally did an exploratory. Guess what
they found. The pea size parathyroid on her right side
was the size of a peanut in the shell. Her collar bone
was hiding it -- that and her 'normal' tests.

Found this info for you.
http://arbl.cvmbs.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/endocrine/thyroid/

The thyroid gland also produces another hormone called
calcitonin, and the parathyroid glands secrete
parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin
participate in control of calcium and phosphorus
homeostasis and have significant effects on bone
physiology.

I typed parathyroid gland into Google. This was on the
first site.
Hope that helps.

Thank you for letting us know how your mom is doing.  I can't help you with
your questions, but want you to know you and your mom are still in my
