As some of you know I did a sea kayak trip to Baja a couple times.
One of the guys on the first trip was Richard, we have boated together
intermittently for a couple years. He was diagnosed with a brain
tumor in October and now he is paralyzed on his right side. The
prognosis was not good so he stopped chemo and is just doing pain
medication. They expect him to lapse into a coma in a few weeks I
suspect he will pass away soon afterwards. They want to get him on
the water one last time, it will probably be a very short trip but I
signed up to help. Sigh.... this will be such a sad trip he was
always a strong paddler. I looked at the Baja photos last night and
it made me so sad. -- MZ

Hospice will drop him and his wife off for a short paddle. Some of
the guys in our paddle group will carry him into a canoe then probably
do a 15-30 minute paddle. I have to think of a good soup to serve I
was thinking about chili and cornbread. Any other suggestions? I
guess his wife was really touched by the outpouring of support, and
Richard will be able to enjoy once last paddle. So sad my eyes are
flooded with tears. -- MZ

I've made this Ham & Potato Soup a few times to great reviews.
http://soup.allrecipes.com/az/DlicisHmndPttSp.asp I add some frozen corn to
it also, however much looks good.
Also made chicken and sausage gumbo (no okra) today for Mike's meeting.
Another big hit.
Both would also go well with cornbread, though I've been making various whole
wheat breads to take.

I am so sorry Mary,. You have made so many good friends through your
paddling, and now you have also lost a few.
IN spite of the sadness, I hope that you will have many good memories
of this friend as well as your others. I know that your life has been
enriched from all your paddling friends.
My thoughts and prayers are with all involved.

>Sigh.... this will be such a sad trip he was

We did the trip. There were about 15 or 16 people who joined us. It
was great they carried him from the wheel chair into a canoe. The
canoe had foam mattresses with some inflated air bladders so he was
reclining, and very comfortable. He was awake and said a few things
to us, he really enjoyed the day. You could see it from the
expressions on his face. He son came for the trip he really wanted to
be there for his Dad. Richard gave us the thumbs up sign at the end.
We placed him in the canoe and had webbing under it then we all
carried the canoe with (him in it) to the water. His wife was in the
canoe and was so pleased with the turnout and his reaction. They both
were in tears at the end of the trip but it was great; I am so glad I
did the trip. We tried to joke and keep it light. I was impressed
they figured out a way to do this, and keep him comfortable. Rest
easy Richard. -- MZ

I sure it was sad, but wasn't it wonderful to be able to do something? It
puts some control of the process back in your hands and in your friends
hands as well.
We can't usually choose our fate, but sometimes if we are very lucky we get
to choose how we approach it.
