Hi Everyone,
I am so glad I found you!!!
I am a very active 40 year old with one prosthetic left knee from an
old athletic injury playing high school basketball at the ripe old age
of 34 and TWO hips with advancing OA. I am also allergic to the poly in
my left knee which has caused many issues including hip oa. I am having
a lot of pain today in both groin areas and thighs and my kneees and
ankles. I live in NC but am a patient of Michael Mont's in Baltimore.
HE documented my poly allergy and replaced my traditional poly with
highly cross linked poly which has helped but my poor hips continue to
deteriorate.
The support of others is as valuable as anything I know. I am also a
member of the totallyhip support group but the more support the better.
We are trying to wait as long as we can before THR due to my allergies
and my "younger" age for joint replacement.
Thanks for being there!!!

Hi Diane,
I am in Apex just minutes from Raleigh. And yes, I have a beautiful
SWEET SWEET 4 yearol old Newfoundland. I often lay on the floor and
curl around her when the pain is so bad. Her big brown eyes make the
entire world better!
Diane - 22 Jan 2005 00:06 GMT
oh, a dog lover near raleigh! i'm definitely moving there now. i have
two shelties after downsizing from a bernese mtn dog. i'm interested
that you go to baltimore for treatment. how did that come about? how
often do you go there? do you fly? i ask because i need an occasional
check-up on a pancreatic cysty-tumor thing at hopkins and was wondering
how much of a hassle that would be if i moved to nc.

Hi Diane,
I had my knee replacement at Baptist in Winston-Salem where i worked at
the time. We relocated to Raleigh area after grad school. I work in teh
triangle and my husband works at UNC so Apex is a good place for us.
Well my knee surgery went sour from the beginning. I developed a blood
clot = DVT 9 days post op and imediately completely scarred the joint
down which we now know is part of the reaction. My surgeon blamed me
for my lack of effort in therapy for my poor range of motion. Well
funny thing he got no better than I got in PT in the OR with a
manipulation under anesthesia. He said all teh skin blistering and poor
ROM was due ot something but he didn't know what and allergic reaction
to prosthetic components was impossible. So when my hips starting
really bothering me I found Dr. Mont quite by accident on-line on teh
totallyhip support group. I kept seeing his name and looked him up. He
is one of the best knee adn hip guys in the world so I decided no more
surgeon in WS and we went to Baltimore. IT is about a 6 hour drive nad
we have found a way to avoid DC all together so it is not bad at all
and Dr. Mont is worth it. He knew of the only lab in the country doing
the allergy blood testing for prosthetic components. And sure enough I
am severely allergic to polyethylene and bone cement. Luckily I do not
have bone cement. I knew he was my answer to prayer when he took one
look at my knee and said he thought i was allergic to something in
there and we were going to find out what.
Sorry for the long reply but it is still a very emotion issue for me.
Take Care,Kim

THANKS Diane, it wan an ordeal bu tnow I am safe and secure in the
hands of Dr. Mont. We have gotten quite close and I feel 100%
comfortable with him even considering my allergies and facing two hip
replacements and the eventual revision of my knee. Dr. Mont is only 46
so I will thankfully have him for awhile.
That is why this group is so special, we have all been through so much
and can automatically relate so well to each other!!!

Newfoundland dogs are the best! I was fortunate enough to get to know a
landseer newf a few years ago. You are lucky to have one to curl up with
:)

Welcome, Kim. Sounds like you've been through the wringer. Pull up a chair
and get comfortable and, at all costs, watch your chocolate. There are
several here who will swipe it when you're not looking.

DeeTee,
I definitely landed in the righ tplace as i LOVE chocolate!!!!!!
Thankfully I am still able to work out on teh ellyptical trainer to
work off the chocolate I eat!!!! My surgeon says staying active will
keep me out of the OR longer so I am as active as i can stand to be.
I lost 65 pounds and have kept it off for over a year now and my hip OA
is still progressing too fast.
Thank goodness for you guys!!!
