Saw two surgeons in Boston.
I saw a highly recommended surgeon at NE Baptist, but he was so
arrogant and disdainful I couldn't imagine him doing my surgery.
The other surgeon was at Brigham and Womens is also a good surgeon,
he's on their webcam. He does a less invasive surgery, doesn't cut the
tendons, only takes a knick out of the muscle, uses computer to guide
him. He says in 3 to 4 weeks I'll be walking without a cane. WE'LL
SEE! I have to wait three extra months for this guy to do the surgery,
the other surgeon could have done it in the next couple of months.
My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I think it's important to have
confidence in your surgeon.

what kind of knee surgery needs to be done and for what condition,
elizabeth? i'm a bit confused, because it sounds like you have two
different surgeons intending two different procedures on your knee, one more
invasive than the other.
i agree with you, you do need to have confidence in your surgeon. i think,
on a cautionary note here, i'd recommend choosing the surgeon, based on
skill--- his success rate, based upon the number of times he does this
particular surgical procedure a year. i know bedside manner can be
important in instilling confidence. brains and skill cutting on your knee,
not just personality compatibility, are important, too. maybe even a 3rd
opinion is an option to be considered.

Athena, I'm sorry you will have to wait longer, but I also feel you should
go with the one you are comfortable with if you are sure that he is just as
good a surgeon as the other one. Is there another one you could see for
another opinion?

It's a shame the first guy had such an attitude. My husband did his CPE at
NE Baptist and had a very favorable impression of the hospital and the
nursing staff. But it is important to be reasonably comfortable with your
surgeon.
Is this second one certain that the less invasive procedure will work for
you? And do you have confidence in his work should he need to shift to doing
it differently? I just ask because it's not that unusual for a knee to turn
out to be more damage than indicated by tests and many of the less invasive
procedures do work with more severe damage. (did that last sentence make
sense? I'm really tired.) Either way, it does help to get along with your
surgeon.

I'm having knee replacement surgery. (I'm sorry I wasn't clear.) I was
still rattled by the doctor from NE Baptist.
If I didn't have RA all I would need is a partial replacement. I have
bone on bone on one side of the knee.
The other thing I didn't care for was the NE Baptist doctor did not
give a straight answer. When asked if he cut the tendons he said "I
don't cut the muscle". That kind of evasive answer left me cold.

If the second surgery is the one I am thinking of -- my
knee surgeon said it was not applicable for me because
I was way to active for that kind of replacement [which
involves not cutting of the muscles]. Having said that,
my nursing home roommate had a friend who had that kind
of replacement and is still having trouble getting more
than a 90 degree bend. I had a 103 after three days and
mine was very invasive.
Had my replacement done at Lahey Clinc by Steven Lemos.
He does knees and shoulders for arthritis patients but
is also a sports medicine guy. Why don't you get a
third opinion. :)

You made the right decision. You are having to wait because he is better.
It will be well worth it I'm sure.

Hey Elizabeth, good to see you posting!
Wish you the very best with your knee replacement surgery. Please keep
us posted as to how you make out with it all!
Praying that all goes smoothly for you and that your surgeon is the best
at what he does. Will be interested to hear how you make out with the
alternate procedure!
Good luck and tell your husband hello!

The pretty much decided to use the doctor from the Brigham and Women,
Wolfgang Fitz. He does the less invasive surgery.
I've heard good things about him from someone who had him as their
surgeon for knee replacement. They had a fast recovery and are very
pleased with the results.
I will look into the doctor Ducky mentioned. Thanks for the
information.
We lost power today so my husband got to work. He shoveled a path to
the car. He got a huge extention cord and plugged it into the car
(turned on the car - thank goodness we filled it up yesterday)and
connected it to the TV. He then jury-rigged some kind of an antenna.
He was able to watch the Eagles/Falcons game and part of the
Patriots/Steelers game before the power finally came on. We may be
totally snow-bound but my husband got to see his games.
My husband says hello back.
Hopefully we'll all get together again soon. All my best to you.

LOL We had a few tense moments here during the Pats game when my husband
kept changing channels during commercials AND NOT GOING BACK!!! I thought
I'd have to confiscate the remote but he finally learned and started getting
me back to the game in ttime to see what was happening. Told him he could
have fliped all he wanted in the earlier game, but not for the Pats!
You have a clever husband.
