Somebody please tell me to get back to work on Rachel's room.

The plan for this week was to take some vacation time to clean out and
repaint Rachel's bedroom for her 10th birthday, which is this Saturday.

I got sick the Friday before vacation started and Tuesday was the first day
I felt good enough to anything but lay on the couch. I had to go to Eugene
for an appointment and by the time I got home, there wasn't any time to
start Rach's room, so regular housework took precedence.

Today I donned my protective armor and waded into the area known as Rachel's
room. "Waded" is not an exaggeration, believe me. I have already thrown out
4 bags of trash and have moved several boxes of 'to sort later' out into the
family room. That made room to get to the closet. The roll top desk is still
buried, but I think the dresser is useable now, so that's a good sign. After
a couple of hours I decided I needed more totes and some sustenance.

Since getting back with the totes and my lunch I have not been able to face
the grim reality that I likely won't get the room painted this week. I will
get it cleaned and prepped, but probably not painted. I certainly won't get
it done sitting at the computer, but I'm scared to go back in there. I don't
even know what to do with all the stuff this spoiled only child has
accumulated. Much of it is in original packaging after months and will be
donated to the women's shelter, and some will be given to Goodwill, etc.

For her birthday celebration, I am requesting that her little buddies do not
bring gifts, but just let us enjoy their company for the day. When I say she
needs nothing, I mean it. Sick, really. She is getting one thing for her
birthday from us, which is a combo., half paid for by her Canada
grandparents. It's a Robosapien and she's been dying to have one...we'll see
if it lives up to the hype. Maybe it'll clean her room.

Kelly,

Just do a little at a time.  That's all you can do.  It will get done
eventually.  For all the stuff Rachel has,  maybe she can go through it with
you and give her the experience of "giving some to others who don't have as
much".  Never too young to start.

What is a Robosapien?  Gosh I fell so stupid.

Well, I did go back in there and uncover the desk and scooped out under the
bed. Whew! Most of this I have to do when Brett and Rachel aren't home,
because of their dust allergies. She will be helping me sort out what to
give away when she gets home from school.

Here's a link to the Robosapien website...

I checked the FAQs and it *can* do light housework! Man, I should've bought
this thing a long time ago. Can't wait to go get it now!lol

He can:

throw, kick, dance, kung-fu, fart, belch, rap and more

This doesn't sound like he will be much help in Rachel's room.

Wow...no wonder she wants it so bad!LOL

There is simply nothing funnier to a 10 year old that a big ol' fart!:o)  It
also takes about 8 batteries in two different sizes. I'll be getting some
rechargeables.

lolololol   Got so I wouldn't go in Jen's bedroom. I
purposely had her bedroom door moved the the end of the
hallway where I couldn't see in. The week she spent
with her grandmother in London, John and I emptied and
scrubbed her room. The dust layer on the baseboard
looked like a layer of felt. ugh  I have to say that
she is much the homemaker now that she has her own place.

Thanks, Caroline...you always give me hope! I gave up on the room for awhile
and washed my car instead. It's well over 60 outside today and I may not get
the chance again for weeks. There is now a room resembling a bedroom more
than a robbery scene. We still have a ways to go, but Rach is home and
helping out now.

Wish me luck,

Rachel's room reminds me of my computer room, which I describe as my
big closet.  I tell myself constantly to get moving and clean out that
room, but I never seem to get it all done.  I do bits and pieces of
it, but as long as I can get to the computer and sit down, I let it
go.
Last summer my garage was in need of a good cleaning.  I hired a lady
to help me and that forced me to actually find a day and a time.  It
worked great!  She pulled everything out and I separated things into
what I wanted to keep and what was to disposed of or sold in a garage
sale.  She cleaned off shelves while I separated and pitched things
and then we both put things back in.  She charges 10 dollars an hour
and I've had her do other things for me besides cleaning.  I had her
come in this week and paint my back door that I'd been meaning to get
done before my arm surgery, but kept putting it off.  It cost me 35
dollars and boy, was it worth it!!
So, if you know of a good person who loves to clean and organize,
that's a great way to get it done.

Just an idea!!

The organizer is my friend, she's coming over tomorrow and we're going to
measure the windows for new curtains and go shopping for paint and then
she's going to help me tape off the room and get it ready for painting. I
just couldn't inflict that much damage on her.lol

The room is very clean now, but the family room has all the totes full of
stuff that needs to be sorted. I need Rachel for that and then hubby will
take the leftovers to the women's shelter and the dump. woo-hoo!

sounds like lots of progrees has been made!  and you have a gem of a friend
there, too.  Maybe Rachel should give gifts to the guests at her party to get
rid of some of the stuff!  (though I imagine the need is greater at the
women's shelter.)

It's funny, Nann...the room hasn't been this empty since she was born.lol
We are having a very simple birthday this year. One special friend is coming
over and we're just going to eat out, rent movies or video games and let
them stay up all night if they want to. We asked her friend to please not
bring a gift, that all we wanted was her company. Rachel doesn't get to see
her very often, so it really is a big deal to have Samantha here.

It's a good thought about the toys, though and I'll see if Rachel has any
input on it. Sammy is the one person that Rachel wouldn't have a hard time
giving her stuff to.

When Jen was in her teens, there was a news report on
local station showing a film of the aftermath of some
idiot college kids idea of fun -- letting a bull loose
in the dorm. It got into one of the rooms and trashed
it. When the film ended and the host return, she sat
there quietly for a second or two and then said
"doesn't that look like most college dorm rooms?"
Exactly what I was thinking about Jen's room. She had
hardwood floors and two oriental rugs but you couldn't
see anything but clothes on 100% of it.
Start handing her her own sheets to make her bed. Tell
her it is too dangerous for you to walk in there.
hehehe  That is what I did.

We also have hardwood floors and Rachel has a lovely cream and light sage
rug in there. I had also purchased a really cute little rug in the shape of
a cat and it had been in front of the toy box, buried by debris, for about 6
months.

Rach came home from school, looked at that little rug and thanked me for
buying it!lol  I told her she was welcome, but that it had been there for
several months. She was stunned.

I bought the paint today and will get started with the prep tomorrow and
hope to get a bit of painting done this weekend. I expect this project to
take me a couple of weeks total and I'm okay with that. Rach is so thrilled
with the prospect of her lavender room. I'll take pictures when it's done.

Yikes call out the folks from Mission Organization!   I remember once
my mom was so mad about my room she took all the drawers out of my
dresser and dumped them out the window. Boy were we embarrassed!   We
were not allowed to leave for school until it was all picked up. My
Mother is very neat the ultimate European house Frau.  Even today my
Mother remembers that incident and said "she lost it" but she  got our
attention.   My Niece's room was chaos but she keeps a really tidy
house now so there is hope.  -- MZ

Hope yes, but no guarantee.  My oldest is still a horrible housekeeper.
Thank God she is personally neat, but her car and her house...

I still cringe when I remember my MIL saying Oh she'll outgrow it.

Younger daughter came organized and neat.  Her home is always spotless.  So
is her restaurant.

you're a good mom, kelly. remember freecycle.com  if you have stuff to
get rid of. i've gotten rid of so much stuff!

my stepdaughters lived with my ex and me through their teen years. the
youngest was 14 and her room was . . . well, a lot like mine at her
age. you literally had to wade through knee deep clothes and papers and
other detritus to get from one end of the room to another. now, she's
27, and an interior designer and a neatnik. super organized. so there
IS hope. i, however, still fight my sloppy demons. . .

Thanks, Diane. I have always been the organizationally-challenged. Rachel
has taken it to a new level.lol  However, part of that comes from the sheer
magnitude of 'stuff' she has. An only child of two working parents, the
first grandchild on both sides and a 'girly-girl', she is incredibly easy to
buy for and loves everything.:o)

We have had serious talks with family members this year and for her birthday
recieved a lovely robe from my mother, cash from "GG" (great-grandma), the
combo gift I spoke of earlier, an XBox game, and assorted books and gift
cards from others. Much better than the onslaught of toys so soon after
Christmas.

Freecycle is a great idea and I have signed up for the local newsletter, but
I'm calling the women's shelter first for the toy box...they may need it for
the kids who shelter there.

The room is still really clean and I have two walls painted. I will try and
get another one done next weekend. I have learned that I can't work fulltime

it will get done eventually. The walls are not going anywhere. ;-)
