Ray,
There are many forms of arthritis, however, since I have OA, RA and
Bursitis I'll address these.
Bursitis - Bursitis is a painful condition caused by inflammation in
one or more of the sacs (bursa) that cushion and lubricate the area
around your joints. From mayoclinic.com
Arthritis - depends on the type. Osteoarthritis (most common) which
results from wear and tear on your joints.
Rheumatoid Arthritis - In rheumatoid arthritis, the synovial membrane
that protects and lubricates your joints becomes inflamed, causing pain
and swelling. Joint erosion may follow.

Thank You Annie.
If there is so many types, how do you or the doctor tell which one you have.
Sounds like symptoms could be the same?

Well, in my case, diagnosis was done with tests, x-rays, "pressure"
spots (I know that isn't what it's called, but...) for the bursitis.
I think sometimes, they go through the list marking out what it can't
be. Lord knows I was dx'd with a bunch of other stuff first (granted
never by the RD).
If you don't have a rheumatologist, you may want to get one. They know
best how to diagnose and treat the various forms of arthritis.

Arthritis is a general term ("Arthr" refers to joints, and "itis" to
inflammation) that covers some 170+ diseases, syndromes, conditions etc.
( here is a short list
http://www.arthritis.org/conditions/diseasecenter/ ) Bursitis is one of
these. http://www.arthritis.org/conditions/DiseaseCenter/bursitis.asp

Bursitis is a form of arthritis, one of over 100 forms which
include osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), gout,
ankylosing spondylitis (AS) , fibrositis, psoriatic arthritis,
Reiter's syndrome, scleroderma, etc. etc. etc.
From the Arthritis Foundation:
Bursitis and tendonitis are rheumatic conditions.
Bursitis means pain due to inflammation in a bursa,
a small sac of fluid which acts as a cushion between
a tendon and a bone. Tendonitis means painful
inflammation or irritation of a tendon., the band of
tissue similar to a rope, that connects a muscle to
a bone.
Bursitis and tendonitis differ from most other diseases
in important ways:
+ In tendonitis and bursitis, inflammation involves the
parts that surround the joint instead of the joint itself.
+ Bursitis and tendonitis usually affect only one isolated
part of the body at a time, instead of several joints.
+ B and T often result from a specific activitiy or injury,
unlike most rheumatic diseases, which usually arise
without and obvious causes.
+ Many forms of arthritis are chronic and disabling.
B and T usually (though not always) last only a short
time and often go away without causing permanent
damage.
