Minn. Town Hits 54 Below Zero, As Freezing
Temperatures Reach Across Eastern U.S., Gulf
                               Coast
                               01-17-2005 5:30 PM

                               Temperatures plummeted across the eastern
half
of the nation Monday, approaching an
all-time
record in northern Minnesota and freezing
the
Gulf Coast as a river of Arctic air pushed
                               southward.

Thermometers registered a low of 54 degrees
                               below zero at Embarrass, Minn.

"You keep living, but it gets old after a
while," said Christine Mackai, the town
clerk
for the community of 691 people in northeast
                               Minnesota.

Minnesota's record is 60 below, set on Feb.
2,
1996, in Tower, about 10 miles north of
                               Embarrass.

The cold at Embarrass didn't stop the
regular
customers from getting their morning coffee
at
Four Corners, a cafe and gas station.

                               "Everybody left their cars running,"
waitress
Trish Roggenbuck said. "It was pretty much
                               breathtaking when you walked outside."

While below-zero readings stayed in the
upper
                               Midwest, thermometers dropped below the
freezing
mark all the way to the Gulf of Mexico
coast.

The morning low was 28, with wind chills in
the
                               upper teens, at Mobile, Ala.,
Gulfport-Biloxi,
Miss., and Pensacola, Fla. A hard freeze
warning
was in effect overnight into Tuesday morning
for
parts of Mississippi, the weather service
said.

Mackai said Embarrass had been prepared for
bitter cold as early as last Thursday. "It
only
got down to 28 below, and that's nothing.
That's
                               no big deal," she said.

Elsewhere in northern Minnesota on Monday,
Babbitt chilled to 51 below, and
International
Falls _ which calls itself the Nation's
Icebox _
dropped to 44 below, the national Weather
                               Service said. Farther south, Minneapolis-St.
Paul bottomed out at a mere 11 below.

The arctic blast followed several days of
                               subzero temperatures. Weather service
meteorologist Greg Frosig in Duluth said
Monday's high would still be below zero in
                               northern Minnesota.

59 and raining here in Oregon (yahoo we need it).  After Portland was
hit hard by an ice storm we are getting back to more normal weather.
Did you folks in Seattle get  ice?  The Columbia Gorge was blasting in
cold air from the eastside so it may have been only the Willamette
Valley.  Avalanche warnings in the cascades.  -- MZ

It was -30 on Saturday, slightly warmer Sunday, but then Monday it
warmed enought that it rained on top of all the snow we have had
recently. I dread going to school this morning because everything si
covered by a sheet of ice. Both driving and walking are treacherous.

I am hopeful that after school the ice layer will have melted.
I have to see the ENT on Thursday and I am already dreading hte drive.

Rose!  You aren't supposed to get that kind of cold!

Sorry to hear about it, and that you got the rain.  An extra reason to stay
home tomorrow.  I timed my flu so that i didn't have to go to work in -40
temps, and am glad for that.  Try it.  It feels pretty darned good!

Feel better,

Thanks Janet:
We are expecting more rain today and tomorrow. Things are bad at the
coast (Vancouver) and there has been a mudslide over night. But I hear
Alberta is getting the freezing rain and ice pellets now. It is not
pleasant if you have to leave the house in any way.

I feel a little better right now, so am going to venture in. The
problem with this job is that I would have to leave well detailed
lesson plans for today, and since I did not do that after school
yesterday, I would have to go in anyway.

Tomorrow is my ENT appointment in Kamloops and I am dreading the trip
already. The highways are in a mess.

I heard about the slide.  Awful.  Heard tonight on the news that it may not
be the last.  I hope this all ends soon.

We had freezing rain yesterday, with warm temps.  Today it snowed, so we now
have a layer of pebbly ice covered in fresh snow.  Average speed on the
evening commute?  30 km/hr.  At least people were being careful.  I hate
these roads.  After all that warm and rain, it is going to -28 tonight...
and back above zero by Sunday.  This has to be the weirdest winter ever.

How did your drive to Kamloops go?  Hope it was not too nerve-wracking.  Did
your appointment work out ok?

>How did your drive to Kamloops go?  Hope it was not too nerve-wracking.  Did
>your appointment work out ok?

It was fine going there except for dense fog near Kamloops. Coming
home though was bad. There was very dense fog for a longer stretch
just outside of Kamloops, and then we passed a roll-over accident that
had several ambulances around it. Not a good sight for someone to see
that lost a son and nephew in a car accident. The road was icy so we
went slowly.

I waited almost an hour to see the ENT, then had a appt that lasted
about ten minutes. He basically said keep doing the salt-water lavage,
using the nasocort, and watch my cold for signs that it is turning
into a sinus infection. I have to come back in two months. Fluid in
the ear seems to have diminished.

So that is that.

My throat was really sore last night, so this may be turning into
strep. We  have had several cases in the school. The doc didnt really
check into this cold. Just looked im my ear and nose.

I'm sorry to hear your visit wasn't more productive, Rose.  That really
bites that you had to make that awful drive for basically nothing.  Good
news about the ears improving, though.

My throat has been quite sore for several weeks, but it is just part of this
virus that is making the rounds.  I hope that is all you have, too.  Strep
is such a pain.

We're supposed to be in for more freezing rain tomorrow, so I'm going to
stay indoors.  Enough is enough.

getting a brief warm up here.  It's supposed to be in the 20s (F) today and
tomorrow.  Thank goodness, we really need to wash the salt off the car!  Then
we're back into single digit highs again...........

Low this morning of -2.   Light blanket of snow - I can still see the grass.
Of course it was 70 last Thursday and we've had flooding twice over the last
two weeks!  If you don't like the weather in Ohio, wait 5 minutes and it'll
change!

I'm sitting here wrapped in a blanket with an electric heater pointed at
my toes and all three zones of heat up to 74 and can't get the house
warmer than 67. The cat was smart and stayed in bed this morning

How come in the summer we are comfortable at 67 degrees and in the
winter we are FREEZING?

Oh man!  It was **** cold this morning!  Its -21 C here and hard on the
fingers and toes.  I scraped the frost off my car in record time but I could
still feel my fingers freezing up even with my heavy gloves on.  I got home
from work a few minutes ago and my fingers are still red and warming up.

Of course I had to slip on the ice today  :-p    Fortuntely I went down
slowly but I landed knees first.  Bruised both knees so that ache is added
to the usual winter walking on snow aches from the OA.  Ah well, could have
been far worse.

Just got back from Cambridge listening to a bluegrass
band and the temp my new car tells me is 2F.  I don't
have to leave the house tomorrow. Actually have a lady
who does organizing and pruning for downsizing coming
to give me an estimate tomorrow. Poor lady. The cold
will be the least of her worries entering this house.

Oh, that brings back memories.  I still have names and addresses
from Cambridge, in mom's old, old phone book.

We could attend bluegrass club meetings in the county every
Tuesday of the month.  Then there are several open-mike
sessions at least a dozen times each month.

has been so balmy here didn't even need a coat yesterday. -- MZ

Ouch.  Sorry to send it, but we were sick of it.  When my friend in a nearby
rural community looked outside and saw -43 on her thermometer, I crawled
back into bed.

Watch out for that ice... I'm still paying for my slip from last winter.  I
keep meaning to buy those pull-on cleats.  They were on sale here for next
to nothing and I was sick so I didn't get them.  Next time, for sure.

Edmonton is currently experiencing warm temps and wet snow.  Roads should be
a bitch in the morning.

Tsk Tsk... all you snowbirds ....  do your complaining now.  Come July

"it's hot enough to cook egg on sidewalk"

And the ubiquedis "Is it hot enough for you?"

It's 7 degrees right now and the high tomorrow will be 29 (which was
higher than it was today).

We get a nice sea breeze going through here in the summer time.
Unfortunately it becomes a bitter wind in the winter.

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

At what temperature do you snowbirds start sweating?  45f?  A nice
balmy 50f?

Crimeny, I don't hit the air condition till its 90f.  With 100%
humidity.

So funny how we adapt to our environment!
