Hello everyone.  I've been lurking here for quite some time.  I'm on 20 mg.
Methotrexate weekly, Arava, Plaquenil, Voltaren, and Folic Acid as far as RA
drugs.  Just got back my second abnormal liver enzyme labs.  Three weeks ago,
they were slightly elevated, now new results from this week have tripled from
those.  Labs have been ok up til now with the only changes having been going
off Vioxx and Sulfasalazine and adding Voltaren and Arava.  I'm waiting to hear
from my RD tomorrow regarding what he wants to do with me now.

Just wondering if there are any non liver toxic options out there.
Thanks
Angela

The new anti-tnf drugs are non-toxic, specifically Enbrel and Humira.
How good is your insurance?  Cost of Enbrel or Humira can be $1100 to
1200 per month.  You might also try milk thistle many folks here take
it to help resolve abnormal liver function tests. -- MZ

Angela,
you've got the double whammy going with both MTX and arava.  Going with one
or the other might take the stress off of the liver.  Have you been on any
of the biologic drugs (enbrel, humira, remicade, kineret)  they all of side
effects but so far liver issues are not one of them

Milk thistle

I talked to a female doctor that has lupus... her liver enzymes went thru
the roof and she started milk thistle and they came down.
Talk to your doctor.  It seems *very* promising.

A follow up from my original post.  My RD took me off of the Arava and Voltaren
and I am to have the labs redone in a month.  Thanks for all your replies.

Angela,

Are you taking Milk Thistle?  This is for liver health and has helped a lot
of people here who take DMARDS.  You can get it at a health food store.

What's the right way to take Milk Thistle?  Some brands say to take it
WITH food, others say to take it BEFORE a meal...
All comments appreciated :)

Well, I've been taking it for a couple on months.  At bedtime with
everything else.  Its worked and hasn't caused a problem.

John, I don't know what the right way is but I take mine when I eat along
with other meds.   The Spring Valley brand I take says preferably with
meals.

well, I just take mine, sometimes with food and sometimes without.  Usually
it falls a bit after lunch and a bit after dinner, but not always.  Works for
me that way.

I take mine with the rest of my vitamins just after
breakfast. But not sure what the bottle says now.
