Update on my surgery

Things are going great except that it's sure not easy to type with a
bulky cast on my right hand and arm!!  LOL

The surgeon said that I had a lot of tearing and shredding of the TFCC
in the wrist so he cleaned that up in the arthroscopy.  He also
cleaned out the inflammation.  Then he shortened the ulnar bone by
taking a 3mm piece out of it.  He put a pin in and used a plate with
screws to hold it together.

I have a soft cast from my fingers up to my elbow, which is better than
I had thought.  I asked the anesthesiologist if I could have a longer
lasting nerve block, which he agreed to do.  I had a numb arm and hand
for a good 24 hours.  Yippeee!!!  That sure was nice!!  The pain has
not been bad except for last night when I opted to take only 1
percocet rather than 2.  He gave me percocet and a muscle relaxer for
pain and nausea,  which are working great!!  I thought there would be
a lot more pain than there has been.  I can use my fingers, but am
limited to less than one pound lifting with the arm.  He wants me to
stay put for 2 weeks, no driving, no going to work, etc...I'm also on
an antibiotic.  As good as I'm feeling right now, I'm sure I'm going
to go stir crazy, but I'm going to obey his orders so that I don't
have problems.

I took my first shower this afternoon and did great!  I ended up
ordering a cast cover that was really easy to use and far better than
a plastic bag and tape, which I've used in the past.  I'd highly
recommend a cast cover!!

He was adamant about me NOT taking my Enbrel til he sees me on the
12th of January for my post op and have the stitches removed.  And
then he said he would decide if I can start back on it.

Just wanted to update you all on how things went and are going.  Thank
you all sooo very much for all your prayers, good thoughts, etc.!!!
I'm certain they helped!!

Happy New Year everyone!!  And to Gwen and Walt.....so glad to hear
that your procedures also went well!!!

Great to hear Carol,
I know you were pretty nervous about this going into it. Having followed
docs orders closely (could be first time in my life lol) really helped me. I
was to keep it elevated to keep down swelling and did. Had very little
swelling. Keep the pain meds up for awhile and after a week or so I bet you
can start weaning yourself off them. Less pain, better healing.
I didn't have too much trouble with boredom 'till I cut back on the pain
meds. Then....
Am going back to work Mon. with light duty. Thank you Lord, though I think I
might just be starting to get the hang of this being off business. I sure am
going to miss my  afternoon nap!!
Take care of yourself especially well now.

carol and gary, good news is nice. keep it coming. you know gary, you
should take into work some of the new data on how afternoon naps
increase productivity in the workplace. The study I read was very
persuasive. I forget the name but it should be 'googleble'. Created
quite a stir last spring and some work places have begun to accommodate
those folks wanting a 'lie down'...
good luck both of you.

Gary,
What exactly did you have done in your surgery?  I remember it was
elbow surgery, but can't recall the details.  I'm glad to hear you're
heading back to work.  I guess that means things are going well for
you.....which is fantastic!
I am taking my pain meds, but I'm now able to take only 1 percocet
rather than 2 at a time and that seems to take care of the pain just
fine.  Plus, I'm now typing with 2 hands...it's a little awkward, but
doesn't hurt.  And the doc told me to make sure to use my fingers.  I
figure typing is great for finger exercises.

How long were you off work?  I like this lounging around, but know
that after awhile I'll be bored.  You're right, the afternoon naps are
lovely.

thanks!

Hi Carol,
Had my ulnar nerve moved out of my elbow as it was being crushed in there.
Kinda like carpal tunnel, but in the elbow. Have been off since the 6th of
Dec.
Good news that you are using your fingers already. Don't overdo. It will
catch up with you , pain meds or no.

So good to hear from you.  It sounds like you are in really good spirits.
I'm glad the surgery went well and you have minimal pain.  Keep us posted on
the healing process.

Yeah!!!  Good to know about the cast cover. I have
stashed that bit of info into my foggy brain for the
hopefully not future.
I had to wait until I had healed for my Remicade and
toward the end there I was grateful for pain
medications. Hope he gives you the heads up on the 12th.
