i am still having trouble getting messages. i find google groups a pain because
of having to sign in and the old messages never go away. is there a way to mark
"all read" or just show "unread messages?"
miss you guys,

{{diane}}, a bit frustrating fer sure. was just at google poking around
and the "marked read" feature seems to be a bad overlook by those guys.
Of course i emailed them expressing a desire to see this feature
implemented.
besides having that "Major Problem" i found some the the new changes
better than the old. I didn't use it long enough to establish a flow of
any kind. I remember using google several years ago for a few months and
it basically made me crazy cause of its awkwardness. That doesn't seem
to have evolved positively in any real way.
Hope you get your newsreader back soon.

I was poking around there yesterday, checking out the new format and it is
an improvement over the old, but I also don't like the layout. You *can* now
mark (or star) threads that you want to follow and more easily find them
later.
I just didn't realize how much garbage my news reader was filtering and how
many trolls are living under the bridge in my killfile. Eek.
I did go back and read my posts from the time Rach was in the hospital and
had a nice cry, remembering how much love was shared with us. Anyway, I'm
going to keep using the german server in OE until something better comes
along.

AOL people on other groups are having the same problem.
The solution is:
With AOL as your ISP you can goto http://news.individual.net/ &
sign up. It's Free.
Then goto http://www.mozilla.org/ & download Thunderbird 1.0.
It's Free.
When they send back your username & password install Thumderbird
with that information & subscribe to alt.med.fibromyalgia & any
other newsgroups you want.
To post & read messages, Dial in to AOL then minimize (don't
close) the AOL program, open Thunderbird & here you are.
You can set Thunderbird to download all the messages so you can
read them & respond off line which can save a lot of online time.
The neat thing is you can use both the AOL news reader &
Thunderbird at the same time to see if AOL has caught up.

That's exactly what I did when my ISP's news server was having
intermittent difficulties :-)

All of your messages from August 8 through December 29
have been cancelled. Did you do that? I can't re-read them.

You can subscribe to the group then you only have to sign in every 2
weeks. You can also opt to receive the messages via e-mail. Not a
great option with all the trolls about. I think Alex has the best
suggestion, although it might work with outlook express the same way.
I have had stability issues with Firefox so I am not sure I would want
to mess with thunderbird (something about my computer configuration
that I have not been able to pinpoint). You will likely have to
minimize AOL. If you get your password you might also download forte
free agent and see if it works. I use the paid version forte agent
and they have a ton of rules and filtering options. I never see the
nasty stuff that is being posted even when they morph. There are
several options you can use once you get the password and account.
The Berlin server does a good job of filtering much of the spam.

Hi Diane & Mary,
http://news.individual.net/config.html has detailed
photo instruction for most of the popular mail/ng programs.
Since OE is already on all windows computers using that would
save a step.

I also use the paid version of forte agent and seem to receive many
more post than using outlook express or even netscape. The free
version I find to be very good also. I am not sure how well it may
work with AOL as they seem to be in their own little world. Alix has
given a very good url to a page that includes all of the newsreaders,
I think. Good luck.

I tried reading in outlook express and had more trouble
there. That is why I use Netscape. Let's me group
entire threads and mark read when I want to and filter
nut cases of course.
When my mother was on AOL, I used to use IE all the
time and I did have to minimize AOL. AOL's idea of IE
was very one sided -- pointed in the direction they
wanted you pointed in. I don't know -- it confused and
pissed me off hence finally figuring out I could
minimize AOL and do my own 'unhelped' thing. Did I
mention that I am paying for her connection to Comcast
myself now. AOL had managed to banned me from her email
more than once and she couldn't figure out how to fix
it. They told me over the phone long distance that it
was because she didn't want to talk to me. sigh....
Finally solved the AOL issue by getting her broad band
no dial up and telling her I would pay for it. A
definite no brainer. lol

I know you are on AOL but that shouldn't stop you from
signing up for the German Newsgroup reader. I read
newsgroups in Netscape. Here is the link if you decide
to branch out.

Duckie is right :) Sign up for the German newsgroup reader, then
download Netscape (it's free ) Netscape has a newsgroup reader, if you
need help setting it up, just holler. The Germany group filters out the
spam, so it's great :) I've been using it for years.
