Hi Everyone,
I am getting ready to buy a new pc and would appreciate advice. Because
of hand problems, I want to get voice recognition software. So far I've
heard that dragon naturally speaking 8 is the best for my needs.
Reading reviews at amazon.com, I see that most people are happy with
the product, but for those who have a problem, technical support is
very poor. I thought it might help avoid problems if I make sure  my
new pc is powerful enough.
I read reviews about ViaVoice(another voice recogniton product). People
also complained about poor technical support. Someone said there was a
conflict between the viavoice software and McAfee virus scan. They said
the problem also existed with the dragon software.
Is there anyone reading this who has dragon natually speaking and
McAfee? Any problems? Any recommendations?

Ellen, I have been using Dragon 7 for about a year and have been pleased
with it.  I did have to upgrade my memory to 512 since my computer got very
slow after installing Dragon at 256MBs of memory.  But once the additional
memory was added, it's back to normal speed.  You do have a "training curve"
where you need to correct mistakes that Dragon makes but that gets less
frequent as time goes on.  I just upgraded to Dragon 8 but have not used it
enough yet to see if it's a lot better.  Dragon had been a lifesaver for me
since I have had continuing elbow problems and am not supposed to do
repetitive motions such as typing and mousing on the computer.  If you have
any further questions, feel free to ask me.

Thanks Mary. Do you have any virus scan software installed? Which word
processing program do you use with it?

Ellen, I have Norton antivirus installed and only turned it off when I was
installing Dragon.  Otherwise it does not seem to interfere with it.  I use
Microsoft word for my word processing program and also use Dragon a lot with
Outlook express to write e-mails.  I do database work from home for a
dentist with a specialized database program and it seems to work pretty well
with that also.

Diane C our resident writer has one version of Dragon
which got her through one of her books. She still uses
it when her hands get to her. I am sure she will be
along soon to let you know about it. Training Dragon is
the hardest part I understand.

When asked about it before this is what she said
including a quote from one of her books...

Subject: voice recognition and a funny

someone recently asked about problems with their voice
recognition software
(dragon or any other). here's a site that might help. i
emphasize might. i'm
not sure anything will help. http://www.speaktoyourpc.com.

and here is my favorite mistake. i dictated: "The
fantasy was strong and
unbidden and delicious, and it stunned her when she
became conscious of it."
This became: "Panasonic's business decisions stunned
her chicken's
contraceptives." i have to admit it was a bad sentence
to begin with, but the
dragon's was no better.

Still makes me laugh. Hope that helps or doesn't but
she did finish a book using the dragon and that is what
still puts food into her mouth and keeps a roof over
her head.
