d'huit - 30 Dec 2004 00:34 GMT now, it's just a waiting game to see what the mri tells us. 2 days, the tech told me.
boy, it's a good thing i decided to take both mobic and a muscle relaxant. had i not had to drive, i'd have taken something stronger. wasn't easy to stay perfectly still for 4 minute increments and not move my head or neck at all for 20 minutes. i could feel different parts of my back wanting to rebel. luckily my shoulder didn't start to act up until the very end and finally getting up again, helped all of it settle back down. the pressure of the cradle on the back of my neck, even though it was well padded, made numbness rise up and around my ear. does anybody else get a headache from staying so still for mri's?

Janet R - 30 Dec 2004 01:36 GMT I was told not to swallow for 18 minutes. Just so happens that I had forgotten my sjogrens rx and my mouth was drier than a popcorn fart! No need to swallow! My shoulder was aching because they slightly overlapped the little cradle I was lying in...and I kept tensing them to stay up.
But at least your MRI is all done and over with....now just to wait!

i keep thinking about a waaaay sweet story, that made the internet rounds, about a little 5 year old girl who was having an mri done. the techs told the little girl not to move, not to chew gum, and not to talk, not to, not to, not to . . . while it was happening. the techs couldn't hear anything while the machine was running, because they are soooo noisey. but once the machine stopped, they heard her sweet little soprano voice singing in the tube. they didn't tell her not to sing.<g>

When I had my cervical MRI, at the last minute Mike insisted on driving me, even though it was only a mile and a half away. I ended being glad he had. My neck was soooooooo painful and stiff by the time it was done. Had a really nice tech who complimented me and helped me get up and get moving. Had a pretty good headache up the back of my head afterwards. Didn't swim that day.............
Sure hope the MRI provides answers.

she was a nice tech too. kept complimenting me while i was in the tube, telling me how well i was doing. i'm so easy to amuse. it made me want to giggle at hearing her disembodied voice speaking to me, by name, from some mysterious somewhere in the tube. it was somewhat surreal, like magnetic schizophrenia or resonance from another world.LOL
i hope it gives me some answers tomorrow, too. did you get any answers from your cervicle mri, nann?

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > I have never had an MRI so I have no advice except I sure hope they > find the problem. -- MZ thanx, maryz. it would be nice if somebody did figure it out. having an mri is really not a big deal, mary, except if being restricted to one position for any length of time causes you discomfort or if you are claustrophobic (which i'm not). at least this mri body tray did have a tiny pad and the tech put a large bolster under my legs, which helped enormously. laying flat on a hard surface, for too long, sometimes causes me to go numb from the waist down. no biggiew0w on that score, but it takes awhile for that part of me to wake up again so i can walk.

> Visit my website: > http://www.mzuschlag.com escrita@hotmail.com - 31 Dec 2004 09:07 GMT Hi Kate, and everyone else,
I had my cervical MRI on December 22, and saw the doc on Monday, December 27. She and the spine department nurse are wonderful. Both of them take a long time making sure I understand everything they tell me, and that I've asked all the questions I want to ask.
The disc in C7 is bulging and pressing on the nerve, which is what is giving me all the pain. Because the PT, relafen, and vicodin aren't giving me enough relief, and because the pain is getting worse, we've decided to start with the conservative approach, which is cortisone shots into the cervix, and I'm going to start taking nortryptilene to help with sleep.
I'm on the waiting list for the injection--should be some time towards the end of January.
I've had cortisone shots in my foot, knee, hip, elbow, and shoulder. I know they can do a lot of good. But, this is my neck we're talking about! Does anyone have experience with this procedure? Did it hurt like heck afterwards, and how long did it take for the cortisone to start helping?
The doc said I will probably need surgery, but maybe we can postpone it for a while this way.
Cheers to all,
Evelyn (mother of Elena, who has JRA and Pancha, who has FMS)

I had trouble with bulging cervical discs this summer. (actually it's ongoing, but I have ongoing treatment now) Not sure if C7 was bulging, but about 5 of the 7 cervical discs were bulging some. Massage and PT helped me some. What made a HUGE difference though was traction. Initially, thye put me on a traction table at PT. I really liked that. My neck and shoulders felt better than they had in 3 years after only one session - though of course, it didn't hold. Now I have a home, over-the-door traction unit that I use when I need it. Should be using it more often, but you know how that goes. Anyway, my point is it might really be a good idea to ask for a PT eval and treatment and possibly for traction. I certainly wouldn't go for surgery without trying these non-invasive methods first. I've had neck problems for a good 25 years and have so far been successful in treating them conservatively.

> Hi Kate, and everyone else, > [quoted text clipped - 26 lines] > Evelyn (mother of Elena, who has JRA > and Pancha, who has FMS) escrita@hotmail.com - 03 Jan 2005 19:37 GMT Hi Nann,
I've been seeing a physical therapist for quite a while now. The MRI was performed on his recommendation, actually. And I took a neck-pain class, where we learned how to create an inexpensive traction device at home by using a towel, a length of rope, and a doorknob! It really does help, I agree. But the PT and I both agreed that the exercise, traction, and the ergonomic changes I've been making at work are not doing enough and it's time to ratchet up a notch. That's why the MRI, and now the injections.
My experience with cortisone is that it really is helpful, so I'm looking forward to some relief soon.
Cheers,
Evelyn
> Hi Evelyn, > [quoted text clipped - 47 lines] > > Evelyn (mother of Elena, who has JRA > > and Pancha, who has FMS) Nann Bell - 05 Jan 2005 14:30 GMT I hadn't heard of doing traction that way before so I googled it. Are you doing what they describe http://www.ultimatewatermassage.com/traction-neck-pain.htm?
I can see that might help some, but I don't think it would be as effective as the home traction units or the traction table at PT because the angles are different. My home unit only cost $40 which probably would have been covered by insurance if we'd had a decent plan at the time (my doc did write a prescription for it). In fact I just found it for half that price on line http://www.painreliever.com/4390.html We had me set it up originally at PT and they gave me their recommended guidelines for use so I wouldn't overdo it. My PCP at the time was a D.O. so she had a more mechanical perspective and she was really on top of what PT treatments to order for me.
Man, just found it even cheaper! http://www.allegromedical.com/patient_care/traction/grayson/over_door_traction _set.P196832 --- this is beginning to hurt my wallet, though at the time I needed to buy it within a couple of days and couldn't have waited for an online order to arrive.
What I like about this traction is that it pulls UP on the neck and also slightly back, somewhat maintaining the C-curve of the cervical spine. I don't know enough to know for certain if it would help you, but it has definitely helped me on and off with neck problems over 23 years so far. It kills me that I got rid of my first unit after 15 years of not needing it, only to buy another one 4 years later. Oh well.

escrita@hotmail.com - 05 Jan 2005 21:59 GMT Hi Nann,
Yes, it's exactly that--a looped towel, a length of clothesline, and the doorknob.
I lie down on my cushy yoga mat, with a pillow under each elbow, and then set a timer for no longer than 15 minutes. You need to set the timer because it's so comfortable you can fall asleep like that. You are supposed to start out with 3 minutes, then work your way up to 15. I like it for both the relief it gives me, and the fact that it was free and I can take it anywhere.
My yoga class is also extremely helpful.
Cheers,
Evelyn

Evelyn, I haven't had injections into my cervical spine, but I have had several into my lumbar spine. It's not too bad. A little discomfort the day of the injection, maybe some soreness the next day and that's it it. You can sometimes feel an improvement on day ,1 other times it takes a couple days to kick in.
