Firstly, a day-belated Merry Christmas to you all......... a grand day was
had by us aboard our boa complete wih frost and snow later in the day BUT.
today our peace was shattered as we were tucking in to another portion of
festive grub by our next door neighbour hammering on the bow doors screaming
that her boat was sinking!!!!
I phoned for her boyfriend as hubby was assessing the bubbles and smoke
coming out of the rear of her boat then it was over the decks to get as much
stuff out of her narrowboat before it settled on the bottom. First over was
the TV and DVD player then a fistful of Christmas cards to be followed by
handbags, coats and the rest of their clothes which at the end were soaked
through. Her boyfriend turned up and it was all hands to the pumps ( only
the one pump we had between us .ours. is for emptying out a small amount of
water..... not gallons of the stuff........) we stood in the bow of their
barge to try and bring the nose down again and lift the stern a tad but it
was to no avail..........and despite all our efforts we *lost* 5 gallons of
their finest red plonk as a plastic container was despatched into the hold
as the handles dropped off it..........( she did however rescue her
corkscrew???)....The boat is now nicely settled in about 5 foot of very cold
water with the insides under a couple of foot of the damp stuff......
bedding is well onto the soak session along with her carpets floating around
but thank God everyone is well even if a tad damp and cold. We offered them
our recliner chairs for the night along with a spare pair of my shoes and
Roberts fleecy jacket, but they refused the chairs and have gone to stay in
a pub for the duratuion it will take to dry their boat out. It appears that
the water tank which holds about 80 gallons of fresh water ruptured and the
weight of the water going to their stern brought the weed hatch below the
water level so the canal could flood in. Anyway we are all fine, and as I
sit typing this we have a pair of swans pecking at the side of our boat to
let us know we are late with their meal!
Have a wonderful time everyone and stay dry. Regards ConnieD.

Merry belated Christmas on your new boat Connie and happy Boxing Day..
I'm so sorry for those poor neighbors. What a terrible thing to happen.
Do you mind that I will pass this story on to my girlfriend who just
called to tell me that at Christmas dinner her husband's chair broke
apart (he's a big fellow) and he fell back against a door jamb and
knocked himself out. He is okay after a trip to the hospital to be
checked out. I wanted her to hear that things could be worse!! My only
disaster was that boyfriend's 92 year old mother stepped on my cat who
promptly bit her on the leg causing more blood to flow that I care to
think about. She and the cat are both okay now and I'm still finding
blood spots to clean off the carpet. Aren't the holidays fun though?

You scared me for a moment. Thought it was your new
boat. Still, not good but does sound like the entire
insides of their will have to be replaced. Can one have
some sort of emergency alarm attached to the water tank
so you are alerted to the start of the flow.... Don't
want that happening to your new home.

the " . . . and sinking???" in your subject line scared me, too, for the
same reason it did duckie.
what a horrible thing to have happened to your neighbors and their boat!
how scary and disheartening. bummer about no contents insurance, but sadly,
insurance can never restore the precious things that get damaged or
destroyed. i'm relieved that everyone is ok.
what caring and good neighbors you all are pitching in and helping them the
way you are doing. sounds just like you, connie.
do these boats come with optional bilge pumps or emergency drain mechanisms?

No contents insurance, and after just going out to see what has happened
during the past few hours, the boat is listing very nicely to starboard, (
right hand side) and the ruptured water tank has come adrift from its
position and is now ice locked against the bow doors. Every so often we hear
these ominous grating and bumping noises as something else falls or shifts
inside the boat. I have been around to start rallying troops for tomorrow so
it looks as if our fitting out will have to be delayed whilst we try to sort
this other narrowboat out. Could really do without this but......... .there
for the grace of God etc..............I just hope that between us all we can
get some sort of home back for them again.

Bet they're glad they have friends like you to actually put
on their wellies and help. You're a star :-) From what you
say it sounds as if the weather is really cold - is that why
the tank ruptured? What we land lubbers would call a burst
pipe? Common enough here, but it sounds pretty disastrous on
water. Oh well the very best of luck to you all, I'll be
thinking of you.

Whew...your subject line gave me a start...I thought maybe you'd sunk!
You are wonderful neighbors and friends. I hope you are able to help those
poor folks get sorted out again soon.
Merry Christmas and happy new year.

OK, stop frightening us with those non-specific, leading subject lines!
How awful for your neighbors and thank goodness they had friendly folks next
door. I hope all works out well for them.
So are the folks who live on the boats sort of their own community? I
imagine they would be - like the folks who do Art Shows here are their own
community and help each other out. Something about that commonality bringing
folks together.

Oh Connie,
I am so glad it wasn't you and glad you were there to help those other
people out like that. But then that is something you would do.
I hope all goes well for them and you also.
