There are years that ask questions and years that answer.
  --ZORA NEALE HURSTON
Today it is Christmas and what do I see?
Faces of loved ones smiling at me.
The friends and the neighbors,
The people I meet
And don't forget email
Friends do greet.

The glow of the candles and lights from the tree
The laughter of children now beckons to me.
The stockings and presents,
From Santa the elf
Who has me now laughing
In spite of myself.

The feast at the table, the cookies and cakes
The pie and the special bread somebody bakes.
Chocolaty kisses
And peppermint hugs
From children I know of
And people I love.

The best about Christmas, however each year
Is reading the story of the baby so dear.
My mind's eye sees shepherds
A-keeping their sheep
And angels proclaiming
The message so deep.

That in that old stable all snug in the hay
Is the wee newborn king we exalt on this day.
Wise Men give presents.
The shepherds adore.
The angels sing praises,
But there's something more.

The wee babe is smiling and what do I see?
His small face, it seems to be looking at me.
His smile says I love you.
His eyes speak of peace.
His heart reaches out and
His love will not cease.

His message is ringing now down through the years.
It rings in our hearts and it eases our fears.
The angels proclaimed it
And we sing it still
On the earth peace
To all men of good will.

And so I send greetings this wonderful day
There's so much to think and there's so much to say.
So I'll say Merry Christmas
And echo the song
That the angels have blessed
Though the years
Have been long.

Peace to this old earth, so filled with up with war
Joy to the people who are searching for more
Love to the ones
Who see only hate
Healing for pain
May the killing abate.

My wish for this Christmas is an old one to me
And my prayers echo those of the people you see
May the gift of the Christ Child
Now reign in our world
May His love bring us peace
And God's banner unfurled.

Merry Christmas to all of you
