Does anybody know where I can get a cast cover...one of those things
that covers the cast when you shower? I've found them on the
internet, but I'd rather find one at a local store, if possible. I
looked at CVS, but didn't find anything. Of course, I may not have
been looking in the right place. I'm going to need one for a long
arm cast and a short one, too.
Also, does anyone know where I can get a thingymajig that is used to
pull a button through a hole when you only have one hand to do it?
I'm not sure what they're called.

I *think* they are called button hooks, but I don't know if they are still made.
My grandmother had one.

Carol, I used the plastic cover for the Sunday newspaper and taped it at the
top with the tape that sticks to itself. Worked fine for me.

A kitchen garbage bag works quite well. I've been using the same one for the
last 6 weeks.

Carol,
I had a cast cover for my leg when I broke my foot. I loved the cast
cover and it was far superior to trash bags and such not only in keeping
the cast dry, but in comfort and safety as well. However, a trash bag
can work---just more risk of leaks and such. The other thing that is
nice about some cast covers is that they can also be quite useful for
protection when going outdoors (especially in the winter). Most decent
home health care companies carry them or can get them rather easily and
can make sure they fit properly. The cast covers come in several
different styles and materials. Some pump up to seal off for leakage
protection, and others use manual sealing devices, but either way, they
do an excellent job.
The button hole thing can be found also at most home health places as
well as in most of the assisitve device or medical supply catalogs.
(wish Duckie was around as she has quite a list of catalogs to find this
kind of stuff in).
Will you also have the arm in a sling besides the cast?
Sounds like you may want to cook lots of things up ahead of time and put
them in containers that can go right from the freezer to the microwave
or oven.
What about feeding your dogs? 'Will you need to put their food in more
manageable containers so it will be easier for you to feed them?
You may want to go back and look at a few of the suggestions you had for
you ankle surgery to prepare ahead of time for this surgery. Things
like make sure you can set things up by the couch so that they will be
easily accessible and reachable. Cook meals ahead of time and freeze.
Get a cart or something on wheels that you can put things on and roll
across the room with you so you can carry several things at once. Will
you need any type of rails or grab bars to get up and down from the
couch? From the toilet? etc.
I'm sure there are a million suggestions that will be of help to you.
Also, do you have someone who can shovel your snow for you and clean off
your car for you when it is needed? How about putting out the trash on
trash day?
Best of luck to you and we'll be praying for you!!!

Carol, I would go with the newspaper sleeve if you can. I've used them
three different times and they worked well. I don't believe you will
have to be out a lot of money on this. Otherwise, I don't know. Good
luck to you. I don't know about the watchcallit thingamajig for
buttons. I always wore t-shirts of some kind. Wasn't at all easy to
get the damn thing off or on though..

I went to a local medical supply place for the one for my son. Found it in
the phone book. Needed to put cornstarch in it after my son got a bit of
water in, but otherwise it was great.
Wish I'd known they existed when I had a broken arm. I'm allergic to
adhesives and the rash from the waterproof tape and trashbags really added
to the itchiness of the arm.

I am using a Xerosox cast cover. It has a pump so you can get all the
air out of the cover. Kinda like vacuum sealing. It works great...I can
totally submerge my leg under water without any water getting in. I
went to the http://www.xerosox.com website and got their 800
number...and I ordered by phone. You will need a flexible measuring
tape to find out which size to order. I received the package 4 days
later. I have used trashbags and tape in the past...that is not a
reliable method...I can tell you that my xerosox has never failed me. I
love it!
